Brightening lives
Giuliana Demma shows a pair of hospital clothes she made. A US girl sews cheerful hospital clothes for young patients
Giuliana Demma, a 13-year-old girl from New Jersey, US, spends two to three hours every day after school on her sewing machine (缝纫机). She does this so she can make special hospital clothes for children who are fighting against cancer.
“I love knowing that I could put a smile on a child’s face who is fighting for their [life],” Demma told CBS News.
She still remembers the time when her cousin Giada was diagnosed (诊断) with brain cancer. Giada was only 10 months old, so her hospital clothes were too big for her. They didn’t feel nice to wear at all. So, Demma decided to make hospital clothes with Disney characters to give her confidence.
“We are big Disney fans, so it was great to have that, and it brought some [joy] and cheer,” said Melissa Demma, Giada’s mom.
Later, Demma set up G’s Giving Gowns, a nonprofit organization (非盈利组织), to help other children dealing with cancer. So far, she and her 11-year-old sister Audrina have made more than 1,800 clothes in bright colors and fun patterns . They have given them to children in hospitals in 36 states and the children can pick any design they like. They’ve even sent hospital clothes to Uganda, with three other African nations set to get them this autumn.
This year, the Starbucks company gave the project $3,000 (about 21,600 yuan) to help more children. Another company cleans the clothes. More and more volunteers have been inspired (激励) to join the project and some of them are also just 13 years old.
“I wanted to do something to help kids like Giada and give them hospital [clothes] that have nice patterns,” Demma said to AP News. “They can feel comfortable [when] they are going through a [difficult] time.”

Exploring China’s food wonders
A book cover for Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper.
A British writer shares her journey through Chinese culture and flavor. After spending 15 years exploring China and its delicious food, Fuchsia Dunlop, a British writer, has become an expert on Chinese food. In her book Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper (《鱼翅与花椒》), I learned that food is not just about taste – it’s also about culture and how it makes us feel happy inside.
Dunlop is like a fantastic tour guide. Through her words, I got to taste the spicy hotpot in Chengdu and the yummy snacks in Yangzhou. Each dish came alive and tasted amazing in her writing.
She talked about the cultural differences between Chinese and Western food. In the West, people focus on balanced nutrition (均衡的营养), while in China, people also care about color, aroma (芳香) and taste. I get to explore what makes each dish special in different places. For example, Dunlop talks a lot about Sichuan pepper in her book. It’s a special spice (香料) that people in Sichuan often use in their cooking. It smells strong and makes your mouth tingle (感到刺痛) a bit. Not only does it make the food delicious, but it also helps with the damp (潮湿的) and cold weather in Sichuan.
A deep lover of Chinese food, Dunlop uses her words to create a “tasty” connection between China and the West. Some people in the West wrongly think that Chinese people eat everything because they are desperate (绝望的) or poor. Dunlop finds this misleading (误导的) and explains that the Chinese are very open-minded when it comes to ingredients (食材). “Chinese emperors were eating fish tongue and duck feet, not out of desperation, but out of appreciation for texture (口感) and mouthfeel,” she explained.
Reading this book made me look at the food around me in a new way and appreciate our eating traditions even more.
