【原文】W: Welcome back to Modern Parenting. We’ve already talked about being open and honest with your kids. And there is one thing that all good parents do and it’s surprisingly simple. Read to your kids. Studies show that children are better prepared for school and tend to get better grades later on if their parents make a habit of reading to them from a young age. One study from Harvard university found that the number of books in the home was the single biggest factor related to success in school more than the education or income of the parents. Reading is fun and it can be an important part of relaxing at bedtime. Best of all, it gives parents an opportunity to communicate with their children and teach them about the world. It’s never too early to start reading to your children. Many parents by books for their kids long before they can talk. And some even start reading to their children before they are born. Trips to the library or the bookstore can be fun activities for young families to do together. So parents, if you’re wondering what to do with your kids tonight, remember: all you need is a good book. That’s all for Modern Parenting. This is Lesley, on 105.7 FM, saying good night.

Every day as the sun rises, Ma Hongyi, a 66-year-old farmer, can be seen patrolling (巡逻) Yuncheng Salt Lake with his dog in Yuncheng city, North China’s Shanxi province.
Ma still remembers the day when he first saw two big pink birds wandering through the water. “I had never seen such pretty birds. They were even taller than me, with long wings,” Ma recalls. He was later told that the birds were flamingos, a rare sight in China, which were listed on the International Union for Protection of Nature’s red list of endangered species in 2013. From that day on, Ma started his second career as a volunteer to prevent human beings from interfering with the wildlife. “The birds are attracted by the good environment,” Ma says. “I will do my best to protect the lake so that birds can come here every year.”
Yuncheng Salt Lake covers an area of 132 square kilometers and used to serve as a salt production base. As the country began attaching greater importance to environmental protection, an ecological (生态的) protection and development center was set up in 2012 to carry out regular ecological protection and restoration (修复) of the lake. “The greatest value of the Salt Lake lies in its ecology, which should be properly restored and protected,” says Chu Xianghao, mayor of the city. The lake area hosts 292 types of wild animals, along with 782 plant varieties, some of which are newly recorded species in the country.
After patrolling the lake as volunteer for over four years, Ma was employed by the local government to help with wildlife protection in 2019. “The lake’s ecology is getting better,” Ma says, adding that he looks forward to the arrival of the flamingos every year. “Some of them are my old friends”, he says.

C(改编题)
Soap (肥皂) might seem like a reasonable way to avoid mosquito bites (蚊子叮) on the basis that if mosquitoes can’t smell you, they can’t bite you. However, a recent study has found that rather than protecting you, certain soaps might actually make you more attractive to mosquitoes.
In the study, conducted at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, four volunteers were asked to wear a sleeve before and after washing with four different brands of soap. The researchers then watched female mosquitoes as only females feed on blood landing on the fabric sample to show their preference. They found that some people washing with some brands of soap, increased their attractiveness to mosquitoes, while washing with other brands of soap tended to repel (驱除) mosquitoes. The repellent effect of some soap may be due to its coconut scent, as coconut oil is known to act as a natural mosquito repellent. The reason behind this attraction is believed to be related to mosquitoes’ sugar intake. When mosquitoes are not feeding on blood, they add their diet with plant juice or sweet water from flowers, “The fact we are taking those flowery and fruity smells and putting them on our bodies means that now the same object smells like a flower and a person at the same time,” said Clément Vinauger, who led the study. It would be like waking up and smelling the smell of coffee and bread, very attractive.
Interestingly, the effects of the soap varied among people, possibly due to the interaction (相互作用) between the soap and each person’s unique body scent. “It’s remarkable that the same person that is extremely attractive to mosquitoes when he is unwashed, but he becomes even more attractive to mosquitoes with one soap, and then become repellent to mosquitoes with another soap,” said Vinauger. Further research is needed to better understand the interaction between different soap and body scents, as well as to develop more effective mosquito repellents.
28. What has the study found?
A. Soap attracts many mosquitoes. B. Male mosquitoes feed on blood.
C. Some plants drive away mosquitoes. D. Not all soap can stop mosquito bites.
29. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By observing the mosquitoes’ behaviour. B. By exploring the history of mosquitoes.
C. By interviewing a lot of volunteers. D. By examining old studies.
30. Why did Vinauger mention coffee and bread?
A. To stress the importance of breakfast.
B. To discuss their probable health benefits.
C. To compare the difference of objects used in the study.
D. To prove the attractiveness of some soap to mosquitoes.
31. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Health. B. Chemistry. C. Sports. D. Tour.

It would be like waking up and smelling the smell of coffee and bread, very attractive.(这种吸引力背后的原因被认为与蚊子的糖摄入量有关。

C. Some plants drive away mosquitoes. D. Not all soap can stop mosquito bites.
29. How did the researchers conduct the study?
