A local grocery store here has been remodelled and not a single one of the changes is good for those of us who shop there. The grocery aisles (通道) have been rearranged with some going in one direction and others going in another. The aisles have been pushed closer together, making it harder to get through them. It seems like all of these changes have been for the purpose of slowing the shoppers down so they will make more impulse (冲动) buys. As I walked through the store today, no one was smiling and everyone was unhappy about it.
The change that bothered me the most, however, was in the checkout aisles. Only a few cashiers were left working with huge sections changed into selfscanning checkouts. It saddened me to see this. I knew that people were probably going to lose their jobs because of this change. I got in a cashier aisle and patiently waited while I saw some other people struggling to figure out how the selfscanning machines worked. I swore at that moment never to use one myself even if I had to wait longer every time I shopped there.
When I finally arrived at the front of the aisle, I saw the cashier was someone I knew. I greeted her with a smile. She smiled back with warmth and kindness that touched my soul. We chatted happily while she scanned and bagged up my groceries. I felt a friendship and a connection with her that warmed my heart. I wished her well before I left.
Machines can do a lot for us, but there are many things they can’t do. They can’t smile or love. Only we can do that. It is time that we should realize that profits aren’t more important than people and that machines aren’t more important than us. It is time that we should learn that loving each other and this world is what life is all about.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

5.The passage begins with two questions to ________.
A.introduce the main topic
B.show the author’s attitude
C.describe how to use the Internet

6.What can we learn about the first experiment?
A.Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B.The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C.The first group did not try to remember the information.
D.The second group did not understand the information.
根据第二段中的“People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.(第一组的人知道他们可以再次找到信息,所以他们没有试图记住它。)”
7.In transactive memory, people ________.
A.keep the information in mind
B.change the quantity of information
C.organize information like a computer
D.remember how to find the information
根据倒数第二段中的“Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called ‘transactive memory (交互记忆)’.”可知,在交互记忆里,人们记得怎样找到信息,故选D。
8.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?
A.We are using memory differently.
B.We are becoming more intelligent.
C.We have poorer memories than before.
D.We need a better way to access information.
根据最后一段中的“but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing”可知,互联网对人类的记忆产生的影响是它改变了人类使用记忆力的方式,故选A。
Why Human Translation Is Better Than Machine?
Will AI take the place of human translators? __1__. In the following sections, we will explore four reasons why human translation will always be better than machine translation.
Machines cannot express feelings and emotions like humans.
Nowadays, soft skills like communication and relationship building are more important at work than technical skills. AI systems are indeed fast, rational, and accurate. __2__. In fact, these are the very skills that make us human. Humans can gain information from nonverbal cues, while machines just can’t.
__3__.
Only a human translator can match and reproduce the style and tone of the source document accurately. With a machine translation, the intended tone and intricate nuances of the original document often get lost. This results in a rather flat and soulless end result. Translating some texts, such as poems and argumentative essays, is challenging for machines. Robots are unable to convey the feeling of the text, resulting in a flat translation.
Machines can’t keep up with language changes.
Machine translation software has to be constantly updated to keep up with these changes. Updating these programs is challenging because they are based on a sophisticated algorithmic system. Human translators, on the other hand, do not have to deal with such difficulties. As we all know, humans are much more adaptable. __4__.
Machines don’t understand complex human cultures.
When it comes to cultural translations, some words may have a specific meaning in one culture but a completely different meaning in another. In fact, in some occasions, even human translators have difficulty achieving a perfect translation, let alone a machine translator.
__5__. It has come a long way in recent years, but it still has a long way to go. A professional humanbased translation service is still by far the best option for translating highquality content.
A.Style and tone may be beyond a machine’s ability
B.A translation cannot be complete without the human touch
C.There’s no denying the importance of machine translation
D.Simply put, there is no replacement for human translation
E.Nevertheless, they are not insightful, empathetic, or culturally sensitive
F.A machine translator can never match the intelligence of a human being
G.Hence they can keep up with language changes faster than any AI program
1.D 根据设空前“Will AI take the place of human translators?(人工智能将会取代人类翻译吗?)”
2.E 根据设空前“AI systems are indeed fast, rational, and accurate.(人工智能的确快速、理性和准确。)”和设空后“In fact, these are the very skills that make us human.(事实上,那些技能为人类专有。)”
3.A 根据段落首句“Only a human translator ... the source document accurately.(只有人类翻译者能准确匹配和再现原文档的风格和语气。)” 故选A。
4.G 根据设空前“As we all know, humans are much more adaptable.(众所周知,人类的适应能力强得多。)”
5.C 根据设空后“It has come a long way in recent years, but it still has a long way to go.(近年来人工智能取得了长足的进步,但仍有很长的路要走。)”
