Unit 4 History and Traditions
Reading and Thinking
Good morning, dear teachers, It’s my great honor to be here to share my lesson with you.The content of my lesson is Book 2 Unit 4 History and Traditions——Reading and thinking . I’ll be ready to begin this lesson from five parts. Analysis of the teaching material, the teaching aims, the important and difficult points, teaching Methods and learning Methods, and the teaching procedures.
First, let me talk about the teaching material.
Part 1 Teaching Material:
The topic of this unit is history and traditions. My lesson is the part of Reading and Thinking. The reading text is an expository article about the United Kingdom. Starting from the puzzle about the different names of the country,the text mainly talks about the long and complicated history of united kingdom of great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as the relationship of the four countries.By studying this text, we’ll enable students to know the history and culture of the United Kingdom and develop the interest in the country.
As we all know, reading belongs to the input during the process of the language learning. The input has a great effect on output, such as speaking and writing. Therefore, this lesson is in the important position of this unit. If the Ss can master it well, it will be helpful for them to learn the rest of this unit.
Part 2 Teaching Aims
According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus (新课程标准和教学大纲), and after studying the teaching material, the teaching aims are the followings:
1.Knowledge objects (语言目标:语音,词汇,语法,功能,话题)
(1)The Ss can master the usage of the important words and expressions.
For example:philosophy evidence ,achievement
(2)The Ss can understand the history of the UK and get the detailed information by answering some questions and finishing some tasks of it.
2.Ability objects (技能目标:听,说,读,写)
(1) To develop the Ss’ abilities of speaking, reading .To improve the student’s reading ability, especially their skimming and scanning ability.
(2) To train the Ss’ abilities of studying by themselves and cooperating.
3.Emotion or moral objects/Cultural awareness (情感目标:兴趣,自信,合作,爱国,国际视野)
(1To broaden students horizon
(2) To enable students to know the history of the united kingdom,then further activate the Ss to think the relationship among history,culture and traditions .
Part 3 The Important and Difficult Points
Based on the requirement of the syllabus.
Before learning the text ,I will let students read a map and predict the main idea of the text according to the pictures and title. After the text, the students should retell the passage according to the timeline ,understand and learn the new words in the text, I think these are important and difficult for students.
Part 4 Teaching Methods and learning Methods
As is known to us all, a good teaching method requires that the teacher should help Ss develop a good sense of the English language. For achieving these teaching aims, (after the analysis of the teaching material and teaching aims,) I will mainly use Task-based Language Teaching method(任务教学法)and Inductive method. The ss will study by Individual ,by group and by class.
At the same time, I will use Multi-media and blackboard to help students better understanding the text.
Part 5 Teaching Procedure
I will teach the text by 4 steps.
Step 1 Lead-in.
I’ll show some pictures about the famous attractions in the UK,for example:the London Eye,Big Ben and so on. Then I’ll ask students to watch a video about the UK. Through these activities ,We can activate students’ interest about what we will study, and catch their attention about the topic and also let students have a basic understanding about the Uk.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Task 1 ( class work)
In this part ,I will list 6 questions about some basic knowledge of the UK for ss to answer.It is a class work.
Purpose of my design: get to know something basic about the UK,then
instruct students to further explore the history,geography ,culture about the UK
Task 2 ( class work)
let students predict what will be talked about in the passage according to the map and the title.
Purpose of my design: through this activity ,help ss learn some reading strategy. What is more,by watching the map,learning about the geography and the overview of the UK
Step 3 While-reading
Task 1 (Individual work)
Skimming: Ss should read the material fast to find out the main idea/topic sentence for each paragraph.It is a Individual work,so I will ask some students to show their work and other students to add something important.
Purpose of my design: help ss know how to find the topic sentence,then to improve their ability of summarizing .
Task 2(Individual work ) Reading for details
Scanning: In this part ,we will read for details. Guide Ss to read the text paragraph by paragraph. then answer some questions .For example:the first is about .....,the last is the summary of the text.
Purpose of my design:through these activities, ss can learn the details about the Uk ,Task-based teaching method is used here to develop the Ss’ ability to understand and summarize information .
Step 4 Post-reading
In this part ,we have 3tasks.
Task 1 ( Individual work) retell the text
Ask Ss to retell the text according to the timeline.
Purpose of my design: through this activity, the students can better understand the text. Also,they can develop the ability of information identification, recombination, ability of summarizing.
Task 2 ( group work) Discuss
In this part,it is a group work.ss will discuss the question with other group members and then choose a reporter to share their opinions with the whole class.
Purpose of my design:
I think If the Ss can finish this task well, they will benefit a lot from their spoken English. I will encourage each student to try their best to express themselves, especially for the Ss who have trouble in English .At the same time, their ability of co-operation can be well trained because it is a group work.
Task 3( group work) Language Points
In this part,I will let ss summarize the language points by groups in each paragraph and then to present the result.
Purpose of my design:make ss to learn and remember the important points in the text, because it is a group work ,so ss can learn to cowork and learn from each other . What is more,they can further improve their self-learning ability by summarizing the language points .
Homework
Purpose of my design: Homework is so important and necessary for students to master the knowledge they have learned. Also,it will check whether the Ss achieve the teaching aims.
