But the weather is already beginning to change, I’m afraid, and during the night showers will slowly move in from the Atlantic and reach southwest England by early morning. The rest of the country will have a very mild, dry night with temperatures no lower than fifteen degrees in the south, a little cooler-eleven degrees or so—in the north. And now, let’s move on to the weather forecast for Friday and the weekend. Well, southern Europe will once again get the best of the weekend weather. Scotland and Northern Ireland will have heavy rain for much of the weekend and temperatures will drop to seventeen degrees. Across most of England the weather will be cloudy but mainly dry with sunny periods. And when the sun does come out, temperatures could rise up to twenty-three degrees.

Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body has held up. everything has held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4,385 kilometers. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”
24. Why did Hunt-Broersma decide to run marathons?
A. She wanted to set a new record.
B. She was driven by her interest
C. She intended to challenge herself.
D. She was inspired by people like her
25. What difficulty did Hunt-Broersma meet with?
A. She didn’t get professional training.
B. She found it hard to keep her balance
C. She suffered discomfort in her left leg
D. She couldn’t use regular running blades
26. What message does the author express through the story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Time works wonders.
C. A good beginning is half the battle.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
27. What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Brocrsma?
A. Annoyed. B. Admiring. C. Sympathetic. D. Critical.
C 25. C 26. D 27. B
根据第二段中““Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. (她说:“以前有一个身体健全的人做过这种事。我想看看我是否可以用假腿做这件事,看看会发生什么。”)”可知,Hunt-Broersma决定跑马拉松是为了挑战自己。故选C项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued. (使用假肢的跑步者不能使用普通的假肢。他们需要一个刀锋式跑步义肢。Hunt-Broersma有两个刀锋式跑步义肢,但她只能用其中一个,因为她左腿肿胀,无法连接到另一把刀。但即使发生了痛苦,她也能够忍受并继续下去。)”可知,Hunt-Broersma在跑马拉松时,要忍受左腿肿胀带来的不适和痛苦。故选C项。
26. 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据第三段中“But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢). (上个月跑马拉松的大多数人在赛前休息了几天时间,在赛后恢复了几天时间。但Jacky Hunt-Broersma不是。她总共在104天内跑了104场马拉松。如果吉尼斯世界纪录证实,这将是一项新的世界纪录。她用一条腿和一个假肢完成了这一切。)”和第二段中““Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. (她说:“以前有一个身体健全的人做过这种事。我想看看我是否可以用假腿做这件事,看看会发生什么。”)”和第三段中“But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued. (但即使发生了痛苦,她也能够忍受并继续下去。)”以及最后一段中““It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.” (“它教会了我一个人可以有多坚强,以及绝对的决心有多重要。如果你内心强大,你可以做任何事情,”她说。“我们的身体真是太棒了……整个旅程令人印象深刻,也非常艰难,但它告诉我,作为一个人,我可以有多强大,我可以把自己逼到多远。”)”可知,Hunt-Broersma勇于挑战自己,努力克服身体不适和痛苦以及她的感悟,由此推知,作者对Hunt-Broersma的态度是钦佩赞赏的。故选B项。

Words! Words! Words! So many words! We use them to express feelings and ideas. But where do those words come from? And how do they end up in a dictionary? The answer is through wide reading of published materials by dictionary researchers.
The editors (编辑) of Merriam- Webster Dictionary spend an hour or two reading every day. What do they read? They read online articles, books, magazines and newspapers. They pay special attention to new words, new usages and differences in spellings. They also find out which words are being used the most. And they pay attention to the way they are being used.
The Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED’s) Reading Program uses paid and volunteer readers to help. If these people have new findings in their reading, they provide examples and explain their usages. The history of a word’s usage and current (当前的) usage are also pointed out.
Millions of historical and current words are kept in the databases (数据库) of these and other dictionaries. Many recently added words may come from electronic files (文件), pop culture and politics. The OED has added many new English words from Republic of Korea recently. Korea, first spelled Corea, has been used as the country’s name since the 17th century. In 1999, “K- pop” appeared in Billboard Magazine and was added to the OED in 2016.
From Merriam- Webster we have 455 recently added words including “dad bod”—a typical middle- aged dad’s body shape. “Digital nomad” was also added, meaning someone who does his job over the Internet from anywhere.
There are so many words in the world. With the great effort of the dictionary researchers, there will be more on the way!
28. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. How editors work to help add words.
B. How editors publish a new dictionary.

29. What can we know about OED’s Reading Program?
A. It provides the changes of Chinese.
B. It creates the history of words.
C. It uses paid and volunteer readers to help.
D. It encourages readers to do more reading.
30. Who can be called a “digital nomad”?
A. A well- paid person.
B. A digital expert.
C. A person who finds words for dictionaries.
D. A person working online from anywhere.
31. What is the purpose of writing the text?
A. To show how words get into dictionaries.
B. To explain where editor s find new words.
C. To show what new words mean to dictionaries.
D. To explain why new words are needed in dictionaries.
A 29. C 30. D 31. A

An experiment in Botswana suggests that painting eyes on the rear ends (臀部) of cows may help protect them from large animals like lions. Protecting cows could also in turn protect the lions from farmers.
Large predators (食肉动物) like lions are under pressure. Much of the land they used to live in has been taken over by humans. Many are even hunted. One serious threat to large predators comes from farmers, who often shoot or poison them after losing farm animals to their attacks. This has long been a problem in the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is an area where the Okavango River empties out. With its waters spreading out over thousands of square miles, the area is an important location for various wildlife. In the area, there are many small farms, with between 6 and 100 cows. Lions are the biggest threat to cows in the area.
Scientists from the University of New South Wales wondered if painting pictures of eyes on the cows’ rear ends might protect them. Working with over 2,000 cows in the Okavango area, the scientists tested their ideas in a four-year study. The researchers separated the cows into three groups. They painted large eyes on the rear ends of one group of cows. The second group got simple Xs. The final group got nothing. The eyes worked well. Of the 683 cows with eyes painted on them, none were killed in the four-year period.Fifteen of the 835 cows with nothing on their backsides were killed. The scientists were surprised to learn even Xs seemed to give the cows protection. Only 4 of the 543 cows with Xs were killed.
Though the results show a simple way to protect cows from lions, the scientists pointed out that the method may have weaknesses. The researchers aren’t sure the fake (假的) eyes would work so well if all of the cows had them. Also, over time, predators might learn to ignore fake eyes. Still, for now, it seems like a cheap way to protect cows in the area.
32. What is the biggest possible benefit of proecting cows?
A. Improving farmers’life quality.
B. Balancing the local ecosystem.
C. Controlling the number of predators.
D. Saving lions from environmental pollution.
33. Why is the Okavango Delta described in detail?
A. To draw attention to cows’ safety.
B. To introduce possible threats to cows.
C. To give the reason for choosing this place.
D. To show the problem of the location.
34. What finding came as a surprise to the scientists?
A. Cows’ eyes could scare lions away.
B. Xs could protect cows from lions too.
C. Many of the cows with Xs were killed.
D. Some cows with nothing on backsides were killed.
35. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Cows can be protected from lions
B. Fake eyes protect cows from lions
C. Fake eyes are used to protect animals
D. Animals are closely related to each other
B 33. C 34. B 35. B
根据文章第一段“An experiment in Botswana suggests that painting eyes on the rear ends (臀部) of cows may help protect them from large animals like lions. Protecting cows could also in turn protect the lions from farmers.(博茨瓦纳的一项实验表明,在奶牛的臀部画上眼睛可能有助于保护它们免受狮子等大型动物的攻击。保护奶牛反过来也可以保护狮子免受农民的威胁。)”可推知,保护奶牛的最大可能好处是平衡当地的生态系统。故选B。
33. 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The Okavango Delta is an area where the Okavango River empties out. With its waters spreading out over thousands of square miles, the area is an important location for various wildlife. In the area, there are many small farms, with between 6 and 100 cows. Lions are the biggest threat to cows in the area.(奥卡万戈三角洲是奥卡万戈河流经的地区。
根据文章第四段“The scientists were surprised to learn even Xs seemed to give the cows protection.(科学家们惊讶地发现,即使是画有X的奶牛似乎也得到了保护。)”
纵观全文,尤其是最后一段“Though the results show a simple way to protect cows from lions, the scientists pointed out that the method may have weaknesses. The researchers aren’t sure the fake (假的) eyes would work so well if all of the cows had them. Also, over time, predators might learn to ignore fake eyes. Still, for now, it seems like a cheap way to protect cows in the area.(尽管研究结果显示了一种保护奶牛免受狮子伤害的简单方法,但科学家们指出,这种方法可能存在弱点。

When Paula was fifteen, she found out something that surprised her a lot: She was adopted (收养的). This news was like a sudden lightning in the sky, showing her a new path she had never thought about before. It made her very curious about her real family and where she came from.
At first, the idea of being adopted was very hard for Paula to understand, like trying to climb a big mountain all by herself. But it also made her want to learn more about who she was. Each step she took was like going on a new adventure, sometimes making her feel scared but also excited. She was looking for her family’s stories, and her wish to find her roots (根) was like a bright flashlight, helping her see the way.
Paula decided to take a DNA test, which felt like using a special key to open a secret door to her family’s past. When the test showed that she was connected to a distant cousin, it made her very happy, like finding a treasure on a treasure hunt. But when there were no more clues (线索) to follow, Paula felt very sad, as if a big cloud had covered the sun and made everything dark. She felt like crying because she didn’t know what to do next.
But even when things looked bad, Paula didn't give up. She became stronger and more determined, like a superhero who keeps going even when it's hard. She thought that if she kept trying, she would find the answers she wanted.
Paula had a best friend named Heather, and they had a very strong friendship, like two trees that grow close together and support each other. They had been friends for a long time and had shared many happy and difficult moments. As they grew older, people noticed that they looked a lot alike and sometimes joked that they could be sisters. They always laughed at this, but they didn’t know that there might be some truth in what people were saying.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The biggest surprise in Paula’s life happened.

The biggest surprise in Paula’s life happened. It turned out that her best friend Heather was actually her half- sister. This amazing discovery was made by comparing their DNA and getting help from a cousin who knew how to understand the test results. It was like a joke they used to laugh at turned into the truth. It felt like a movie, but it was really happening to them. They made sure it was true by looking deeply into their family's past. With the help of family members and the important DNA proof, they knew for sure that Heather and Paula were sisters and not just friends.
This big news changed everything for Paula and Heather. Knowing they were sisters made their friendship even more special. They were so happy to find out they were family and celebrated how their lives had come together in such an amazing way. Paula’s story, from being shocked by learning she was adopted to being happy about finding a sister, shows that life can be full of surprises. Their story also shows us that sometimes the people we choose to love can become just as important as our family by blood.

The Best Bakeries in ParisLe
Grenier à Pain
152 Rue Oberkampf, Paris
Winner of the 2010 prize for Best Baguette in Paris, this famous bakery located in the heart of Montmartre is run by Michel Galloyer. Three generations of Kaysers have established a number of bakeries across Paris, where they sell their unique variety of bread, comprising a mix of milk, hazelnuts and honey. Au 140
140 Rue de Belleville, Paris
Au 140 counts a list of awards to its name. The official supplier to the presidential palace in2001, its baguette was named the best in Paris that same year.

Words! Words!

A. A well- paid person.

C. A person who finds words for dictionaries.
D. A person working online from anywhere.
