A Bright Idea
Evans Wadongo was from a village of Africa. He had to do homework by the light of a kerosene lamp (煤油灯). Evansˈ eyes hurt and this made studying difficult. It was common in his village. Many children left school for this reason... so they remained poor for the rest of their lives.
Although studying was difficult, Evans was an excellent student and went to a university. He continued to worry about the kerosene lamp. By this time, he realized it was not just bad for schoolchildren but for the whole family. First, it can cause illnesses such as coughs. Also, the light can hurt peopleˈs eyes. Besides, it can lead to fires. Lastly, kerosene is expensive, so families have less money for food. It was difficult to come up with a different kind of lamp that was cheap and good for the environment. Yet Evans did not give up.
One day, he had an idea. He could use a small solar (太阳能的) light. Sunlight is free and solar power is good for the environment. Evans built his first solar lamp, and it worked. He began to build more lamps and sent them to local families. An organization heard about this and provided money for him to build more solar lamps.
Each lamp only cost $20. However, this was a lot of money to many villagers who only earned around $34 a week, so Evans made sure he kept the cost down. First, Evans used recycled materials. Next, volunteers built the lamps. Finally, people from many countries gave away money to his team, so the lamps were usually free.

How did people tell the time before clocks were invented?
At first, the ancient people looked up at the sun and could tell it was the middle of the day when the sun was directly overhead in the sky. They also knew when it was morning or evening.
Later, the Egyptians used sticks. These sticks measured (测量) time during the day. The sun shone on the tall stick and the stick made a shadow (阴影). As the sun moved across the sky, the position (位置) of the shadow changed. This would let people tell what time it was.
Over time, the Chinese first used sundials instead of shadow sticks. The sundial has a type of shadow stick on it. As the sun shines on it, a shadow appears on the numbers. Each number stands for an hour of the day. But sundials donˈt work at night or on a cloudy day! There are no shadows unless the sun is out.
Water clocks used water to measure time at night. Water dripped (滴落) slowly from one bowl into another. The level of the water in the bowls slowed the time.
People also used sand glasses. You may have seen one. Some games still use sand glasses. The sand falls from the top of the sand glass to the bottom. It measures short amounts of the time. The more sand falls, the more time has passed. When the sand has finished falling, you have to turn the second glass over.
41.At first, the ancient people told the time by looking at ________.

Energy is the ability to do work. Solar energy comes from the sun. There is also energy that comes from wind and water.
But do you know that energy can come from people, too? When you pedal a bike, you produce energy. You use your legs to push the pedals. Your energy is transferred (转移) to the bike. That makes the bike move.
Now imagine riding your bike to create enough power to run a computer. Some students at one school did just that! They jumped on bikes connected to generators (发电机) and pedaled in place. Soon they were producing electricity. This energy is needed to run their computers.
Here is how bicycle-powered energy works. When a student pedals the bike, the back wheel spins. The wheel spins the generator. The generator produces electricity. As long as a student pedals the bicycle, electricity moves through the generator. The electricity can be used right away. This energy can also be stored and used later.
People use bicycle-powered energy to run small devices (设备) such as small televisions and fans. They often use less than 100 watts per hour. However, it would be a mistake to use pedal power to run a fridge. This large machine often uses more than 700 watts per hour. The electricity for these machines comes from power lines overhead or underground.
Pedal power can be seen in schools, gyms, and homes. What a fun way to provide electricity!
46.How does the writer lead into the topic "bicycle-powered energy" in Paragraph 2?
A. By asking a question. B. By telling a joke.
C. By using an old saying. D. By making a survey.
47.What does the underlined word "spins" in Paragraph 4 mean in the text?
A. Falls down suddenly. B. Breaks up completely.
C. Moves up and down slowly. D. Turns round and round quickly.
48.What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The future of new energy.
B. The forms of world’s energy.
C. Using bicycle-powered energy.
D. Producing bicycle-powered energy.
49.What do we know about bicycle-powered energy?
A. It can’t be seen in schools. B. It comes from wind and water.
C. It can be stored and used later. D. It’s from power lines overhead.
50.In which unit of a textbook can the text be found?
A. Unit 1 Friends Forever B. Unit 2 Dream of the Stars

A. The future of new energy.
B. The forms of world’s energy.
C. Using bicycle-powered energy.
D. Producing bicycle-powered energy.
49.What do we know about bicycle-powered energy?
A. It can’t be seen in schools. B. It comes from wind and water.

There's no doubt that inventions play an important part in our everyday lives.
【答案】
There's no doubt that inventions play an important part in our everyday lives. They are of great importance in our lives, but sometimes they do no good to us.
When I was in Grade Seven, I began to play games on my phone. The games were interesting and I felt kind of relaxed when playing. However, something bad happened. Gradually, I found that it was getting more and more difficult for me to pay attention in class. And since I seldom played sports with friends, I got heavier and heavier. Finally, I realized that no matter what great invention the phone is, I shouldn't let it influence my schoolwork and health. So I decided to break the bad habit.
Though the phone is a great invention, we shouldn't spend too much time on it.
