Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere friend.I have already forgotten the name of an old lady who was a customer on my paper route when I was a twelve-year-old boy in Marinette, Wisconsin back in 1954.Yet it seems like just yesterday that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I can only hope to pass on to someone else someday.
On a Saturday afternoon, a friend and I were throwing rocks onto the roof of the old lady's house from a secret spot in her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the rocks changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof's edge and shot out into the yard like comets (彗星) falling from the sky.
I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and sent it for a ride. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the old lady's back porch(走廊).At the sound of broken glass, we took off from the old lady's yard faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof.
I was so scared about getting caught that I was concerned about the old lady with the broken porch window all the time that night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her bad luck. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to look into her eyes.
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I thought would cover the cost of her window.I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.
Paragraph 1:
I waited until it was dark._________________________ ________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper. ________ ______________________________________________
Para.1:I waited until it was dark. When the old lady came back home, I handed the envelope that I've prepared. After handing it, I was scared to death, and I ran away quickly. However, I still wanted to know whether she could forgive me.Thus, I hid after a big stone, and just saw her opening the envelope. It was for a long time that she just stood in the yard and did nothing else. After a while, seeing her go back into the house, I left the yard.
(When the old lady come back home, I handed the envelope)与段首句衔接不当。
[尝试修改] Para.1: I waited until it was dark.Since there were few people on the street, I walked to her yard secretly. Then I walked straight to her mailbox and put the envelope into it without any hesitation. After that, I ran out of the old lady's yard quickly being scared to be discovered. Lying on my bed, I had a good night because I had taken the stone in my heart off.
Para.2:The next day, I handed the old lady her paper. She said, “Boy, wait for a minute!” I was so scared but still waited for her.For a while, the old lady came out of her house with a splendid box, I looked into her eyes with great surprise, only to find her smiling as usual.I took the box from her, opened it, and found some sweets, seven dollars I gave her and a note saying “I'm proud of you!”
[习作品析] “For a while, the old lady came out of her house”与Para.2段首句衔接不当。 但第三句话“For a while, the old lady came out of her house”
与Para.2段首句衔接不当。从段首句“The next day, I handed the old lady her paper.”
[改进思路] 在老奶奶叫住“我”后,添加她进房(she went into her house)的情节,再写她拿着盒子出来(came out again with a splendid box),其他内容不变。
[尝试修改] Para.2:The next day, I handed the old lady her paper. She said, “Boy, wait for a minute!” I was so scared but still waited for her.She went into her house and came out again with a splendid box.I looked into her eyes with great surprise, only to find her smiling as usual.I took the box from her, opened it, and found some sweets, seven dollars I gave her and a note saying “I'm proud of you!”
Suddenly _______________ jumped out in front of ________.
第二段:__ had no idea _____ we were and it got dark.
[1]The watch was my grandfather's.He hung it by his bed.The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold.My grandfather got it after his fifty years of faithful service with his firm.I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school.
[2]The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased, “You'll be going to the new school next, Will.Remember you'll need plenty of patience. That's the right way.” I nodded when handing him the watch. He gazed at it for some moments, and wound it.
[3]The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away in trust until she considered me old enough to look after it.I protested(抗议) so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it.
[4]The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school.I never made friends easily, and for a time I did little more than get on speaking terms with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his possessions before us.Everything Crawley had was better than ours—until he brought the watch.
[5]“I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. “Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered(冷笑) in disbelief.Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon.
[6]Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got my bike out of the shed.
[7]I rode fast, excitement coursing through me.Then suddenly a puppy ran out into my path.I pulled at my brakes so hard that the bike stopped to a sharp standstill (急停) and I fell over.
I picked myself up and put a trembling hand into my pocket.______________________________________________________________________________________________
“That's not the right way.Patience, Will.Patience,” a voice echoed in my ears after the boys left. ______________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________
