Friday night, I was struggling to choose a good movie to watch. I spent 20 minutes looking through hundreds of choices at Amazon Video and still couldn’t decide. In the back of my mind, I was thinking that I had to choose a great movie to watch, because if didn’t I would be wasting my time. I thought that instead of watching a bad movie, I would be better off using my time in a more meaningful way (I see this as an opportunity cost). After seeing the reviews and asking around for suggestions, ended up watching LaLa Land, a popular movie that most of my friends have seen recently.
The next day, I went to Duane Reade to buy toothpaste and was overwhelmed again by the large quantity of the choice. I started wondering if more choices empower consumers or just make them think they are empowered, when in reality they are just at a loss.
From finding a good restaurant to searching for your life partner, everything is all about choices; big or small, they are all related. Take dating life in New York for example. There are an endless range of choices which can lead to many New Yorkers finding it hard to make a decision. It is a big city with a lot of lonely “I could do better” people that are constantly searching for the next best one.
It doesn’t contradict with providing people choices and information to empower them, as there is difference between having a reasonable number of choices and an overwhelming amount. When we are overwhelmed with the number of choices we have, we end up less satisfied with the choice we make. You might calculate the opportunity cost and think about “what if”.
I’ve started to realize that living a life with simplicity can sometimes be a challenge, but it is certainly worth it.
4. Why did the writer find it hard to choose a movie to watch?
A. He thought watching a bad movie wasn’t meaningful.
B. He didn’t know which movies were popular among his friends.
C. He found it challenging to choose from so many choices
D. He believed it a waste of time to look through hundreds of choices.
5. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Living a simple life is always challenging.
B. More choices may lead to dissatisfaction with our decision.
C. New Yorkers tend to be discontented their dating partner.
D. Opportunity cost is what we should consider when making a decision.
6. What’s the author’s attitude towards the endless choices presented to him?
A. Positive. B. Neutral. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative
7. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Less is Better
B. Make Your Choice Goad
C. More Choices, More Opportunities
D. Simple is Better, Less is More
C
Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve moods by stimulating the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of study with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve moods. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top, personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call it a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything — most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies? While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (纵情) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.
8. Which aspect of comfort food do Traci Mann’s studies focus on?
A. The means by which it affects moods. B. Its role in reducing negativity.
C. The extent to which it lifts moods. D. Its impact on physical health.
9. How were the studies carried out?
A. By comparing students’ feelings on different occasions.
B. By observing students’ different reactions to foods.
C By analyzing questionnaires about comfort foods.
D. By collecting data about people from all walks of life.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a rule. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a suggestion.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Feeling Negative? Try Comfort Food B. Comfort Food May Not Work Wonders
C. The Science Behind Comfort Food D. Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
D
Bees have evolved to be skillful flying builders. Worker insects team up to finish a complex hive (蜂房) that ends up being many times their size. It is these insect building teams that inspired Mirko Kovac, a roboticist at Imperial College London, to develop a way to improve the flexibility of 3D printing.
A typical 3D printer is limited by the range of its nozzle (喷嘴) and can only make objects smaller than itself. Dr Kovac’s team has removed these limits by giving the printer nozzle wings. They designed a system of flying robots that is composed of two types of drones: builders and scanners. The builders carry the 3D-printing nozzle, while the scanners are equipped with cameras that monitor the building process.
The building process switches between builders and scanners, layer by layer, printing and adjusting until the structure is complete. To start, the builder hovers over its area of operation and begins to release a jet of building material as it moves skillfully along its flight path. Once the builder robot has sprayed a layer of material, the scanner robot flies over and inspects the progress. The system then calculates the next layer that the builder should make, while also correcting any errors.
The researchers tested the system by building both a large cylinder (圆柱) made of foam and a small cylinder made of the cement mixture. The tasks were not simple due to the difficulty in ensuring maximum stability. Dr Kovac’s robots made it with flying colours — the cylinders were built to be within 5 mm of the width and height of the planned structures meeting British building standard.
While these robots have been shown to be capable of manufacturing, Dr Kovac believes their primary use will initially be in repair. The flying robots can operate anywhere, making them ideal for fixing things in dangerous or inaccessible places. These robots could be used more quickly, cheaply, and with less risk to humans. Thinking more long term, Dr Kovac even sees a potential future for his construction robots building on the surfaces of the Moon or Mars.
12. What is the design of Dr Kovac’s team based on?
A. Bees building hives while flying. B. Bees flying in a flexible way.
C. Bees growing bigger than the hive. D. Bees working together as a team.
13. What is the function of the builders in the building process?
A. Correcting any errors. B. Spraying construction material.
C. Carrying the scanning camera. D. Monitoring the building process.
14. What does “made it with flying colours” underlined in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Lost balance in the sky. B. Passed the test excellently.
C. Stopped the work halfway. D. Made the cylinders colourful.
15. What might the flying robots first be used to do according to Dr Kovac?
A. Manufacture products. B. Construct buildings.
C. Repair damage in risky places. D. Monitor air pollution in the sky.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people think that positive thinking is mostly about keeping one's head in the sand and ignoring daily problems, trying to look optimistic. In reality it has more to do with the way an individual talks to himself. Self-talk is a constant stream of thoughts of a person, who is often unaware and uncertain of some events, phenomena, people, or even the person himself.____16____Meanwhile, positive thinking can help to stop negative self-talks and start to form a positive view on an issue. People who regularly practise positive thinking tend to solve problems more effectively. They are less exposed to stress caused by external factors. They tend to believe in themselves and in what they do.
____17____People who think positively demonstrate increased life spans, lower rates of depression and anxiety, better physical and psychological health, reduced risks of death from heart problems. Positive thinking also contributes to one's ability to deal with problems and hardships.____18____For example, researchers have found that in the case of a crisis accompanied by strong emotions, such as a natural disaster, positive thinking can provide a sort of buffer against depression and anxiety. Resilient people who think positively tend to treat every problem as a challenge, a chance for improvement of any kind, or as an opportunity for personal growth. Pessimists, on the contrary, tend to perceive problems as a source of additional stress.____19____
In conclusion, positive thinking is a powerful and effective tool for dealing with hard times and improving the quality of one's life. It doesn't have anything to do with ignorant optimism when an individual refuses to notice a problem.____20____
Thinking in a positive, self-encouraging way brings about many benefits to one's physical and mental health.
A. It doesn't cause any severe emotional discomfort, either.
B. Negative self-talk damages self-confidence and decreases self-respect.
C. It helps one to remain clear-headed and confident in difficult situations.
D. Positive thinking has several beneficial effects on the body and the mind.
E. As thinking changes, an individual's behaviour and habits change as well.
F. They often offer a real alternative to the common and regular way of thinking.
G. They often feel discouraged long before trying to solve the problem, even if small.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

C. By analyzing questionnaires about comfort foods.
D. By collecting data about people from all walks of life.
10. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To explain a rule. B. To introduce a concept.
C To present a fact. D. To make a suggestion.
11. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Feeling Negative? Try Comfort Food B. Comfort Food May Not Work Wonders
C. The Science Behind Comfort Food D. Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. B

A typical 3D printer is limited by the range of its nozzle (喷嘴), and can only make objects smaller than itself.
Dr Kovac’s robots made it with flying colours — the cylinders were built to be within 5 mm of the width and height of the planned structures, meeting British building standard.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.
