We are pleased to announce (宣布) the results of our competition to create a new school festival for students to celebrate this year. This competition, which we have had twice, has been a huge success. But this year, we have had more entries (参赛作品) than ever before!
We have received many wonderful suggestions, including one that suggested there should be a festival of shoes! This was certainly a creative idea, but not surprisingly, our judges liked other suggestions more!
The winning suggestion was from Henry Chan, who suggested that there should be a festival of bicycles. It was the judge’s favourite. Henry, who is in Grade Eight, said that he went to school by bicycle every day and enjoyed taking bicycle trips very much. He added that so many public bicycles were in use in our city that it would be a shame not to celebrate them.
As part of the festival, a bicycle trip will be organized in the city. Then students will hold a ten-metre bicycle riding competition, in which anyone who can ride the slowest wins. What’s more, the students are called on to ride bicycles to school as often as possible.
The Bicycle Festival will start on June 18th and last two days. We hope you will take part in the festival and do your bit to protect our environment!

①My choice for a modern wonder of the world is the Simplon Tunnel in Switzerland. It’s actually two tunnels—railway tracks run through both of them.
②They’re each almost twenty kilometers long. They’re not the longest tunnels in the world now, but they were when they were built, back in the beginning of the 20th century. The first one was started in 1898 and opened in 1906. The other one was started in 1912 and was opened in 1921, so each one was taken about eight years to build. The first tunnel was built by drilling in both directions—when the two drill-holes met in 1905, they were only two centimeters out of alignment. In those days, that was a tremendous achievement.
③While it was being built, about 3, 000 people worked every day. The working conditions weren’t very good—for example, it was often very hot inside—and more than sixty people died during the building of the tunnel.
④The tunnel joins Switzerland and Italy, and it has helped to make the travel between the two countries a lot easier than it was before. Now, people can put their car on the train and take it through the tunnel, so they don’t have to drive over the Simplon Pass.
⑤I think this was a great thing to build all those years ago and it has made a big difference to the whole of that part of Europe.
23. The two tunnels took about ________ years to build.
A. eight B. sixteen C. twenty D. forty
24. How does the writer explain that the working conditions weren’t very good?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparison. D. By telling stories.
25. Paragraph 4 is mainly about the ________ of building the tunnel.
A. cost B. ways C. meaning D. difficulties
26. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (P=Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
D
I’ll always remember the first time I tried ballet. My mother was a dancer and I wanted nothing more than to be like her, but after making mistakes during my first class, I felt like I wanted to quit right away. As it was only my first day, however, I told my mom I couldn’t wait to dance again.
Weeks passed and my dancing didn’t get any better. Then my dance teacher announced that we were going to perform in a show. I was scared of falling on my face in front of hundreds of people and disappointing my mom.
Even though I practiced hard for the show, I never quite got the hang of it. Finally, I went to my mom to tell her how I felt. She simply laughed and told me she would teach me all she knew about ballet.
My mom quickly discovered how bad at ballet I was, but she still taught me with the greatest patience, love and understanding. When I jumped and fell, she was there to catch me. When I lost my balance, she held me up. By the time the show arrived, I was as prepared as I could be.
The music began and my heart started to race. Breathing calmly, I began moving to the music without missing a step. When the music stopped, I ran off the stage and laughed in excitement.
My mom found me and gave me a huge hug, telling me how proud she was. I looked my mom in the eye and told her that there was no way this could have happened without her. Through this, I realized one important fact: My mom will always be there to catch me if I fall.
27. What happened to the writer on her first day of trying ballet?
A. She fell down and hurt herself. B. She made no mistakes while dancing.
C. She realized she was talented in ballet. D. She lied to her mom about liking ballet.
28. What does the underlined phrase “got the hang of it” probably mean?
A. learned to do it well B. lost interest in it
C. had trouble with it D. took pride in it
29. It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that the writer’s mom is _______.
①patient ②understanding ③loving ④hard-working
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④ D. ①③④
30. What did the writer learn from her ballet experience?
A. Don’t be afraid of disappointing others. B. Never try something you are not good at.
C. Her mom would always support her. D. Every mom will be proud of their children.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
下面文章中有五处(第1-5题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A,B,C,D,E和F)中选出符合意思的标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。
Best Tips to Visit a Museum
The best way to avoid the crowds at a well-loved museum is to be thoughtful about your visit. Try these ideas:
____31____
Dying to see The Louvre in Paris or the Uffizi in Florence? These are some of the busiest museums in the world! So they are filled with visitors any time of year, but far fewer than during summer when tourism peaks. So consider visiting in off season—April/May or September/October—after kids are back in school.
____32____
Be sure to arrive at the museum well-rested and ready for an art adventure. One of the best ways to achieve that is to be sure you don’t wear yourself down by beginning your day in a long line trying to get an entrance ticket. In fact, in some museums, tickets are only available when booked months ahead.
____33____
When you’re checking that museum website before your visit, be sure to see what’s on while you’re there. When special exhibits are on loan from other museums around the world, you may have a rare “two-for-one” chance to see something truly special without traveling to another part of the world.
____34____
Many museums ask backpacks to be stored in lockers. But even if they don’t, you’Il want to minimize things you have to carry through the museum. The last thing you want to do is skip* part of a visit because your shoulders ache or you’re tired of hanging onto your rain jacket and umbrella.
____35____
If you’re pressed for time, save your energy for seeing the actual art! Remember, you’re visiting for the experience, not the souvenir*. Before you buy, always ask yourself if you really need it. All in all, the best way is not to enter the shop at all.
A. Go hands-free.
B. Go off season.
C. Skip the gift shop.
D. Buy tickets earlier.
E. Visit a smaller museum.
F. See the special exhibit.

【16题详解】
推理判断题。通过全文可知,本文是介绍了四个有趣的节日,所以可能在网站的文化版块看到这篇文章。故选D。
【17题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Cheese-Rolling—England This festival is celebrated on the last Monday in May. It takes place on Cooper’s Hill.”可知,滚奶酪节是在五月的最后一个周一。故选B。
【18题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The Songkran Festival—Thailand It is the celebration of the New Year in Thailand. Rather than a single day, Thailand celebrates the New Year from April 13th to April 15th.”可知,泼水节是为了纪念新年,所以选项A是错误的;根据“The Tomato Festival—Spain Spain takes “tomatoes fights” to a whole new level. But the tomatoes are thrown, not eaten.”可知,在番茄节时,番茄是拿来扔的,而不是吃的,所以选项B是错误的;根据“Cheese-Rolling—England The first person to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese.”可知,在滚奶酪节时,第一个到达山脚的人是胜利者,所以选项C是错误的;根据“Burning Man—The US The festival takes place in the Black Rock Desert.

They’re not the longest tunnels in the world now but they were when they were built, back in the beginning of the 20th century.
④The tunnel joins Switzerland and Italy and it has helped to make the travel between the two countries a lot easier than it was before.

【答案】31. B 32. D 33. F 34. A 35. C
