We all know what scientists are, but have you heard “ice-cream scientist”? Most people never think much about what things are in their ice-cream, but as an ice cream scientist, Dr Maya Warren can’t stop thinking about it.
Maya showed her interest in science at a really young age. When she was in high school, she fell in love with chemistry (化学). At that time, she decided to become a high school chemistry teacher. One day in college, she watched a food show called Unwrapped. She was excited about what people did in a flavor (风味) chemistry lab. “How cool it is! I could do this. I’m a chemist.”
After graduating from college and getting a degree in food science Maya Warren became an ice-cream scientist! Her first job was at Cold Stone Creamery, which made her have chances to go to different places such as India, Brazil, and Egypt. There, she helped design dairies (奶制品) so people could start making ice-cream mix and turn it into ice-cream. She also learned how to make mix by using local ingredients.
Later, Maya joined the ice cream company SMiZE Cream, working on designing ice cream recipes, making new ice cream flavors, and finding ways to improve them. In 2021, she founded Ice Cream for Change—a platform (平台) of ice cream makers and lovers. She also taught people of all ages how to make healthy ice-cream at home on Ice Cream Sundays online during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Maya loves everything about ice cream, from its sweet science to the way it brings people together like no other food can! “Creating ice-cream flavors is not just a science. It’s also an art. There are endless possibilities.” She talks to the magazine about her sweet job.

①We’ve all been there—staring at a book, hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably wondered, “Is there any way to improve memory?” So, why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this?
②Every student knows that it’s helpful to review what they’ve studied before. According to experts, we can learn things better if we wait for some time before trying to study them again. They say that trying to retrieve (找回) something from your memory after you have had some time to forget it will make it easier to remember in the future.
③Similarly, studies have shown that taking some time to just do nothing after studying might mean that you can remember things better afterwards. It is not clear why this happens. But some think it has to do with the relationship between long-term (长期的) and short-term memory. Another study tip is to change between different topics as you study. This can help you make connections between different ideas. Now connecting them to each other or to images is often considered a good way to remember something. Former (以前的) world memory champion Jonathan Hancock says how picturing pieces of information in different physical locations or connecting them to memorable images makes them easier to remember.
④ ▲ Hancock says that you can remember things better by organizing them generally for your brain. Many other experts also suggest avoiding stress and that we should get a lot of rest and exercise.
⑤So, the good news to take from this is that while it may be hard, improving our memory is something we can control.
23. How does the writer start the topic of the passage?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By giving an example.
24. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A. There are also more things we can do to improve our memory.
B. Besides, enough rest and exercise can make your memory better.
C. Connecting different ideas is a good way to remember something.
D. It is possible to control our memory even though it is hard.
25. According to the passage, students who ________ might improve their memory.
A. control their brains to remember things
B. taking pictures about what they have learned
C. spend some time playing sports after studying
D. study what they have learned again after some time
26. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
A recent short video series Escape from the British Museum, which tells the story of how a Chinese cultural relic (文物) runs away from the British Museum and finds its way back to China, has taken the Chinese Internet with its touching creative storytelling.
Directed by two Chinese vloggers (视频博主) together with a professional team, the three-episode (集数) series, lasting just under 10 minutes each, talks about the personification (拟人) of a Chinese jade teapot (玉茶壶), which runs away from the British Museum and starts a hard journey to get together with her family in China. The female vlogger plays the role of the jade teapot and comes across a Chinese reporter in London. She believes him to be her long-lost family and asks him to take her back home. The lines in the series, such as “Family, I have been lost for a long time,” and “As long as I’m with family, I’m safe,” have resonated (共鸣) deeply with people who watch them.
Many Internet users expressed their opinions on the series. The idea of making the series came from an online opinion left earlier this year. It suggested a story about Chinese relics in the British Museum coming to life and returning to China. When one of the vloggers saw the message, she replied with such words, “Wait for me.” Then the two spent months researching, preparing, and travelling to the UK to bring this story to life.
Nowadays, technology and different online APPs have provided everyone with chances for creation and expression. But this series proves that deep love and efforts are the keys to success. It also shows that the information of short videos can be more than just humorous. The series not only is enjoyable but also shows a powerful message--the importance of cultural treasures and the hope of the return to home.
27. Which statement is TRUE about the short video series from the passage?
A. The series lasts less than 30 minutes in total.
B. The series were produced by the two vloggers.
C. The series set the scene mostly in China.
D. The series were not popular with viewers at first.
28. Where does the idea of the series come from?
A. From the two vloggers. B. From British Museum.
C. From the reporter. D. From an online opinion.
29. What is the key to success according to the passage?
A. Time and money. B. Love and hard work.
C. Ideas and creativity. D. Technology and online APPs.
30. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A true story of a Chinese cultural relic.
B. Chinese cultural relics in British Museum.
C. Chinese short video calls for return of relics.
D. Technology changes the way people express ideas.

After graduating from college and getting a degree in food science, Maya Warren became an ice-cream scientist!

④ ▲ Hancock says that you can remember things better by organizing them generally for your brain Many other experts also suggest avoiding stress and that we should get a lot of rest and exercise.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Jenny,
I’m happy that we are going to have a garden party for traditional festivals. I highly recommend the Mid-Autumn Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This festival is significant as it represents family reunion.
For the garden party, we could have two activities. First, it’s a great idea to have a mooncake making activity from which we can learn to make traditional mooncakes and understand the craftsmanship behind them. Second, we can also set up an area for moon-watching. Teachers and students can sit and admire the beautiful full moon while sharing stories and poems about it. Admiring the moon is meaningful as it symbolizes togetherness. It makes people think of their loved ones far away and express their wishes for them.
Hope my suggestions can be accepted.
Yours,
Li Hua
