Countable / uncountable nouns

Let’s try to count some food.
Countable nouns
mushrooms
sausages
eggs
hot dogs
sandwiches
a tomato
We can add ‘s’ or ‘es’ to these nouns!
a sausage
a mushroom
a hot dog
an egg
tomatoes
a sandwich

Some food items are uncountable!
Uncountable nouns
ham
bread
cheese
butter
milk
juice
We can’t add ‘s’ to these words!

We can use ‘There is’ with singular countable nouns.
There is …
There’s a mushroom.
There’s a hot dog.
There’s a tomato.
Or: ‘There’s one …’
There’s = There is

We can also use ‘There is’ with uncountable nouns.
There is …
There’s some ham.
There’s some butter.
There’s some milk.
We can use ‘some’ with uncountable nouns.
There’s one milk.

When we use ‘some’ with countable nouns, we use ‘There are …’
There are …
There are some sausages.
There are some eggs.
There are some sandwiches.
We use a plural noun with ‘some’ because it means more than one.
We use ‘There are …’ with plural nouns.

How do we talk about food we like or don’t like?
I like / don’t like …
I like lemon tea.
I don’t like soya milk.

When it is a countable noun, remember to use the plural form after ‘like’ or ‘don’t like’!
