The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings

Parents looking for education pins, especial for kindergarten, have probably come across the term Waldorf. But what exactly is a Waldorf school? Waldorf education is based on the ideas and teachings of Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian educator and philosopher who opened his first school in Germany in 1919. Steiner’s schools focused on “whole child” development, rather than the narrow academic focus popular in German schools at the time.
Experts in Waldorf education say that these school stress teaching the whole child. A main lesson is taught in a block of time lasting for several weeks. Creative arts like drawing, painting, language studies, music and drama support the main lesson and give students a variety of avenues to learn the material. Students then continue an exploration of the lesson through movement and motor skills, with activities like physical education, building, dancing and gardening. The goal of Waldorf education is to develop free, but morally responsible individuals equipped with a high degree of social competence and creative capabilities. Factual knowledge, homework and tests scores receive less attention.
Like all educational philosophies, Waldorf schools have both positives and negatives. Advocates like Moskowitz say its approach — balancing academic subjects with artistic and practical activities, teaching kid how to think, not what to think — helps develop a love of learning. Some common drawbacks mentioned in connection with Waldorf schools are the same things that many parents like, such as the lack of emphasis on technology and standardized testing. Because many Waldorf schools are private, tuition may also be an obstacle for some parents. At the Waldorf School of Baltimore, for instance, tuition for the 2021-2022 school year was more than $20,000 according to its website although financial aid is available.
Today, there are almost 1,200 Waldorf schools and more than 1,900 Waldorf kindergartens around the world, according to the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education. These schools can be found in approximately 60 different countries around the world. Roughly 130 Waldorf schools, both public and private, are in the United States. The Waldorf Education model has become most popular in European countries, having even influenced many of the public schools.
4. Why did Rudolf Steiner open his first school in 1919?
A. He wanted to help children make progress academically
B. He planned to fully develop children's potentials in all aspects.
C. He expected children to have more indoor activities.
D. He tried to follow the teaching in Germany at that time
5. Which of the following receives the most attention in Waldorf education?
A. Developing the sense of responsibility. B. Remembering knowledge about facts.
C. Achieving high status in society. D. Getting high marks in the tests.
6. How does the author prove the tuition of a Waldorf school is expensive?
A. By giving an example. B. By comparing with other schools.
C. By listing some reasons. D. By showing the result of a survey.

Chinese designers are setting themselves apart from the global competition today by turning to China’s rich history for inspiration to create their contemporary clothes.
Long before the invention of the qipao, there was a similar-looking type of clothing that most Chinese wore starting from as early as the 26th century BC. Known as hanfu, these traditional clothes featured loose lapels and long flowing sleeves. While the details changed through the centuries, the style of the hanfu has endured even till today, with a growing number of Chinese designers turning to it for inspiration and infusing (注入) elements of it into their contemporary designs.
“The old style is monotonous and makes people think of patterns featuring dragons and phoenixes. To make it appealing, we need to get rid of the original frame and be innovative,” said Cai Wenqiao, an integrated design undergraduate student.
For her final-year project, Cai designed eight pieces of clothing inspired by the Chinese prose called Peach Blossom Spring by Tao Yuanming. Cai used pink as the main color for all the pieces as it represents the peach blossom. She has also included classic hanfu elements such as embroidery (刺绣) featuring flowers and butterflies. Silk, a common material used to make hanfu, was also the choice material for the project.
“The combination of nostalgia (怀旧) and modern influences should set trends for some time to come. The fashion’s future is far from clear, but what is clear is that Chinese designers’ influence and Chinese heritage infusion are here to stay,” wrote Mike Bastin, senior lecturer at Southampton University.
8. What can we learn about hanfu from paragraph 2?
A. It develops from the similar-looking qipao.
B. It interests a large number of designers.
C. lt is characterized by simplicity and comfort.
D. It dates back hundreds of centuries.
9. What does the underlined word “monotonous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Inspiring B. Convenient C. Boring D. Expensive
10. What is Mike’s attitude toward the future of integrating Chinese elements into clothes?
A. Doubtful B. Positive C. Cautious D. Unclear
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. An Eight-year Project of a Chinese Designer
B. A Combination of Ancient and Modern Fashion
C. Differences Between Eastern and Western Cultures
D. Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. B

【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词下一句“To make it appealing, we need to get rid of the original frame and be innovative (为了吸引人,我们需要摆脱原有的框架,进行创新)”可推测,旧的样式单调。所以monotonous为“单调的”之意。选项A“Inspiring(鼓舞人心的)”;选项B“Convenient (方便的)”;选项C“Boring (单调的)”;选项D“Expensive (昂贵的)”。故选C。

They also have a clearer estimation of what they know and don’t know.
So, which is better? The question can be answered in a foxy hedgehog style. ___16___ The choice between being a hedgehog or a fox is a false trade-off. The most effective way to go through life is to try to be that rare mixture known as foxy hedgehog.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

Paragraph 2:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. She immediately set to work, organizing the necessary materials and ingredients for making popcorn. The children eagerly joined in. The next day, they carefully packed the freshly made popcorn into colorful paper bags, each one tied with a ribbon and labeled with a smiley face. Mrs. Meredith then explained the plan to Bernard and his mother, who were overjoyed at the prospect of Bernard being able to contribute to the family’s income. Bernard, with a newfound sense of purpose, set out with his bags of popcorn, determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Bernard was very grateful for the children’s help. He walked through the neighborhood with a spring in his step, proudly offering the popcorn to each household. Bernard’s sales were better than anyone had anticipated, and soon he had earned enough money to help his family with their daily expenses. He returned home, beaming with pride and gratitude, to share the good news with his mother and Mrs. Meredith. The children, too, felt a sense of accomplishment and joy, knowing that they had made a real difference in someone’s life. They learned that even a small act of kindness can have a big impact on someone’s life.

The Language Exchange Programme allows students in pairs to communicate in two different languages they wish to share and learn each week. Students record short entries after each partner meeting noting the language skills practised and the topics discussed. Each pair of students meets three times throughout the term with a teacher who decides if the exchange is effective. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive one credit each.
Requirements for completion:
•One welcoming session on the second Friday of the term
•18 weekly one-hour pair meetings
•Weekly progress reports for all pair meetings

•Once a pair has been determined to be suitable, the students will be contacted individually with a special permission number to register for the programme.
Reminders:
Signing up for the programme does not automatically mean that you will be able to register and participate. Pairs are matched by languages of interest and proficiency levels.
7 What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The course of Waldorf education. B. The origin of Waldorf education.
C. The popularity of Waldorf schools. D. The pros and cons of Waldorf education.

For some moments John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea!
