Rolland and Adeline are proud parents to nine beautiful children. Their youngest
two, daughter Lanto, and son, Rindra, were both born with cleft lip (唇裂) conditions.
In Madagascar(马达加斯加), many families have never seen a cleft lip before, so it’s
a condition often greeted with fear and misfortune in some rural( 农 村 的 )
communities.
However, the news of Lanto and Rindra’s cleft lip wasn’t much of a shock for
Rolland and Adeline because Rolland’s cousin — a man in his fifties — had lived his
entire adult life with an untreated cleft lip. Although seeing a relative with a cleft lip
meant the family weren’t afraid of the condition, they knew the negative impact an
untreated cleft lip can have on a person’s health and life. As any loving parents would,
Rolland and Adeline wanted a better future for their children.
Rolland heard an advertisement on the radio about an Operation Smile surgical
programme in Antsirabe, Madagascar. Finding that the children could have the
surgery(外科手术) for free was a dream coming true for the family.
When Rolland and his children arrived at the patient village, they were surprised
to see so many other families in the same position. After a thorough medical
examination and evaluation(评估) by medical volunteers, Lanto was found to be fit
enough for surgery, and later got the new smile her parents had dreamed of for her.
But, for younger brother Rindra, the journey to a new smile would take a little longer.
Operation Smile has provided hundreds of thousands of safe surgeries for
children with cleft lip conditions worldwide. For more information about our work or
to find out how you can help, visit www.operationsmile.org.
4.What do most people think of cleft lip in Madagascar?
A.It is beautiful. B.It is normal. C.It is unlucky. D.It is unavoidable.

A.Their children’s smile. B.Their relative’s experience.

Music streaming platforms (平台 ) such as Spotify and Apple Music have
completely changed how people listen to music nowadays. By paying very affordable
prices, people can access music very easily. However, while these platforms may
provide benefits for some artists, up-and-coming small artists are being left behind
because they only focus on big names and creating profits.
Because of COVID-19, musicians have not been able to tour or perform live in
many countries, which contributes to a large part of their income. In a YouTube
interview, up-and-coming Texas artist Mobey mentioned that “The majority of my
income comes from playing live shows. Usually that means around 50% — 70% of
what we expect to make in a year”. With these factors, small artists are finding it
increasingly difficult to make it in the industry(行业) due to the lack of investment
(投资) into new talent.
Small artists on Spotify and Apple Music can expect to make little to nothing.
An artist on Spotify can expect to earn an average of $0.003 per stream or around $3
per 1,000 streams for one of their songs. On Apple Music, artists can expect to make a
little more with an average of $0.01 per stream, or around $10 with 1,000 streams.
Even if they could hit around 1,000 streams, they have to pay music distribution (分
发) platforms needed for their music to be shown on the streaming platforms such as
DistroKid, whose cheapest plan is $20.
A new artist would find it very difficult to promote their music outside of their
social media accounts which may not even have a large amount of followers. They
probably cannot get large amounts of streams on their music since it is not being
promoted due to the lack of exposure (宣传) they have on social media.
With the takeover of music streaming platforms, many artists are finding it
increasingly difficult to make a sustainable (可持续的 ) living from their love for
music. A simple way these platforms can enable new artists to keep making music is
to increase their payouts per stream for their music. Hopefully the music streaming
industry will make similar changes to improve the situation of their artists.
8.What is the problem with music streaming platforms?
A.They ignore small artists.
B.They are not user-friendly.
C.They are very difficult to manage.
D.They limit the number of small artists’ songs.
9.What do artist Mobey’s words center on?
A.His lack of investment. B.His total income in a year.
C.The main source of his income. D.The reason for his fewer live shows.
4
10.What do the figures in paragraph 3 show?
A.How a music streaming platform works.
B.Small artists’ hope for music streaming platforms.
C.Small artists’ dislike for music streaming platforms.
D.Why small artists earn little on music streaming platforms.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Music streaming platforms: Do they really put profits first?
B.Music streaming platforms: Are they a chance or challenge to artists?
C.Music streaming platforms: Have they harmed the industry for artists?
D.Music streaming platforms: Could they offer music lovers better services?
D
It’s been nearly two decades since the traditional clothing style Hanfu first
started to reappear in China. Since then it has gone from a small cultural movement
celebrating an ancient fashion to a trend(趋势 ) that is booming on social media,
having been adopted by China’s Generation Z as a means of connecting with their
past. Instead of following other cultures blindly, Generation Z now have different
opinions about what trend is by promoting local culture while having an objective
view of exotic cultural products.
The new tastes of Generation Z — young people born after 1995 — are well
represented on Bilibili. In the recent New Year’s Eve gala presented by Bilibili, it
attracted more than 100 million views within 48 hours with a colourful set of
programmes ranging from Peking Opera to classical Chinese cartoons. The same is
also true of movie industry. Last year, for the first time, the top 10 most viewed films
in China were all domestic(本国的 ) films, while the ticket sales for imported films
have dropped to only 16.28 percent.
“Generation Z grew up with the rapid development of China and under good
economic conditions. With the development of the Chinese Internet industry, they
have more access to diverse international information and culture, which bring them a
much broader vision and makes them more open and confident in analyzing foreign
culture. Apart from taking pride in China’s rapid development, this generation also
pursues individuality and values devotion to the country, ” Professor Zhang Yiwu
said.
He also noted that the popular rock and punk culture pursued by the 70s and
80s generation is more of a challenge against real life and local culture. Some people
who were born in the 1970s and 1980s did not grow up in the Internet age — they
experienced the transformation of China going from poor to rich first-hand. This kind
of longing and admiration of the West came from a lack of confidence.
However, Generation Z now have the confidence to look at Western culture
with equal status(地位). This kind of cultural confidence will result in China being
more active and creative in its development on the international stage in the future.
12.What does the underlined word “exotic” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Classic. B.Foreign. C.Traditional. D.Fashionable.
13.Why is Bilibili mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.To promote Chinese Internet industry.
5
B.To stress the popularity of national art.
C.To confirm the rise of new media.
D.To show the popularity of New Year’s gala.
14.What do we know about Generation Z from the text?
A.They have a stronger cultural identity.
B.They are longing for cultural diversity.
C.They have made China develop rapidly.
D.They are more fond of foreign culture.
15.What is the main idea of the text?
A.A confident country leads to a better future.
B.Cultural confidence is of great significance.
C.China’s new generation redefine national culture as trendy.
D.Hanfu style connects ancient fashion and modern trends.

【参考范文】
Dear Jack,
Do you know the Dragon Boat Festival? It is one of the four top traditional
Chinese festivals and I want to share its origin and customs with you.
The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month and it has
a history of two thousand years. The festival is in memory of Qu Yuan, who was a
patriotic poet in ancient times. On that day, people often get together with their family
to eat rice dumplings and hang the moxa grass on the door to pray for disaster relief.
In southern parts of China where there are abundant rivers and lakes, people often
hold the dragon boat races, whose lively atmosphere always brightens the audience.
If you have free time, I want to invite you to celebrate the festival with us. I
believe you will learn a lot and enjoy yourself. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
