When I went to study in America last year, I had trouble communicating with Americans at times. One day, I asked my roommate Kevin, “Shall we play soccer tomorrow?” He answered, “Let’s play it by ear.” I was so puzzled(迷惑的). “Ear can play soccer?” I asked. He explained, “It means let’s see how things go. The weather report says tomorrow is rainy.” Last October, I was waiting for the bus in a station. Beside me sat a young man. When he knew I was Chinese, he asked me something about the Great Wall. I told him, “The Great Wall is more than 20,000 kilometers long.” The man said, “You don’t say.” I was surprised. “There must be something wrong with him,” I thought. Later, I knew he meant “Really?” I was once invited to my classmate’s home. His mother said to me, “Break your ice, please.” I wondered, “You didn’t give me any ice.” Later my classmate told me she meant I could make myself relaxed in their home. From then on, I realized English idioms had special meanings. It was wrong to translate them word by word. 26.Why did the writer go to America last year? A.He studied there. B.He spent holidays there. C.He did business there. D.He visited his relatives there. 27.When Kevin says “Let’s play it by ear”, he wants to tell the writer________. A.Help yourself. B.It’s polite to break the ice. C.Ice can make you cool here. D.There must be something wrong. 30.What’s the best title for the passage? A.The Most Useful Language — English B.The Importance of Knowing English Idioms C.Differences Between Universities in America D.How to Communicate with Americans B People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own. One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly. Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement. 31.The writer learned English in Wuhan University for about_________. A.a week B.a month C.a term D.a year 32.According to the writer, _________is a good way to improve your English. A.thinking in English B.learning English grammar C.watching English films D.reading English book 33.The underlined phrase “got it over” in Paragraph 3 means “_________”in English. A.stick to it B.depend on it C.overcome it D.understand it 34.To the writer’s surprise, his English improved quickly_________. A.in the university B.in the middle school C.in China D.in America 35.The best title for this passage should be_________. A.The Importance of English B.My English Learning Experience C.My University Life D.My American Friends C Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about Swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice. Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word. Somebody may be a good listener, but he is afraid to speak because he’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone as long as he knows English. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make. Reading and writing are more important for senior(年级较高的)school students. First we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is very important. It’s easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way. 36.What’s the best way to learn to swim ? A.Reading books about swimming. B.Looking at others swimming. C.Going into the water and learning. D.Listening to others’ advice. 37.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE ? A.Listening is very important while speaking is not. B.If someone laughs at your mistakes, you should stop speaking English. C.Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. D.You can only learn English by listening. 38.What’s more important for senior school students ? A.Speaking and writing. B.Writing and listening. C.Speaking and listening. D.Reading and writing. 39.What’s the best way to learn English well according to the passage? A.By reading. B.By listening to the radio. C.By speaking. D.By doing more practice. 40.Which is the best title for the passage ? A.How to Learn English. B.Easier Said Than Done. C.Listen First, Speak Second. D.How to learn to Swim. 四、任务型阅读(10分) 阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。 It’s true that you can learn new words when you read or listen, but you should also study new words seriously. Here are a few things I do. Make flashcards. I find this is really the best way to learn new words. Make some small cards and write the words on one side and either the words in your language or the meaning in easy English on the other side and test yourself. To make this work, you have to review as often as possible. Make sentences with the new words. This is great if you can ask someone to check them. It is also great to make up crazy sentences. In that way you won’t forget them! I also collect example sentences of the words I’m trying to learn. If I see the word from a book, I write down the sentence. Make up a mnemonic (助记符号). A mnemonic is a way to remember something, like a short story. For example, if I want to remember the Japanese word “yukkuri” (which means “slowly”), I could think about the English words “you” and “curry”, and maybe imagine someone eating a plate of curry very, very slowly! Put signs with English words on things in your house. For example, I put the word “kitchen” on the kitchen door. The problem is that it works for a while and then you get used to the words and forget to read them! 41.Is it great to make up crazy sentences? 42.What does the writer think is the best way to learn new words? 43.How many ways of learning new words are mentioned? 44.What is the problem for us with putting signs on things? 45.What is the passage about? 五、补全对话(每小题2分,共10分) 根据下面的对话情景,在每个空白处填上一个适当的句子,使对话的意思连贯、完整。 A: You look unhappy.46.____? B: Bad luck! I didn't pass the English exam. A:47.______ . B: Maybe I didn't find good ways to learn English. A: 48. ? B: I learn English by doing my homework early in the morning. A: Oh, why don't you read English early in the morning? It's easy to remember things in the morning. B: Sounds good! I'll do some reading in the morning. A:49. ? B: No. I just listen to the teacher in class. A: That's not enough. You should write down important things. After class you can review them. B: OK. I'll buy a notebook then. A: Good luck to you! B: 50. . 六、书面表达(15分) 假如你是李明,学校广播英语节目的主持人,收到了一封读者来信,谈到了他学英语的一些困难。一 他记不住单词。二 他听力很差。三 他害怕用英语和别人交谈,他害怕别人嘲笑他的错误。请写一封回信,对于记单词,提高口语,听力这三方面给出建议, 开导这位读者,字数不少于80,可发挥一,二条阅读,写作方面的学习方法。 My dear friend: You have trouble in learning English. You can’t remember new words. Why not talk to your teachers and classmates and ask for help? By telling them your problems, they might know how to help you improve your English. Secondly, you should do more practice of English listening, speaking, reading and writing every day. A lazy man can not learn English well because learning a language needs a lot of practice. Last but not least, I suggest that you should stick to reciting words and good articles. That way, you will know what to write and what to say when you do writing and speaking. Only through this way can you make progress in learning English. I hope you will find these ideas useful. 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
