Looking for a right place to travel?
Western Australia
On April 20, a total solar eclipse (月全食) will be visible over the northwestern edge of Australia.
For an event that will likely last about one minute, the town of Exmouth and the greater Ningaloo Peninsula on which it sits have been planning for more than a year.
There will be outdoor viewing platforms where spectators (观看者) can safely watch the solar miracle (with protective eyewear, of, course) as well as musical performances, educational opportunities to learn about science and astronomy, and a three-day Dark Sky Festival.
FIJI
Brilliant, blue waters, expansive coral reefs and hundreds of peaceful islands. While the country is spoiled for underwater beauty, take an opportunity to explore its above-ground treasures, too. To learn about the local Indigenous communities, travelers can take part in a kava welcoming ceremony or enjoy a lovo, a meal cooked by hot coals in an underground pit covered with banana leaves. Fiji Airways now has direct flights from Los. Angeles and San Francisco, making it relatively easy to get to the islands. As the Fijians say, bulal
Uganda
There’s considerable change brewing (酝酿) in Uganda’s travel offerings at the moment with the East’ African country looking beyond the traditional staples of safari and wildlife spotting to appeal to both regional and international visitors.
From the expansive shores of Lake Victoria to the snowy Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda is a beautiful wilderness playground, with opportunities for adventure including hikes through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or up to the craters (火山口) of the Virunga volcano chain or whitewater rafting along the Victoria Nile.
Thessaloniki, Greece
Throw in a popular waterfront and approach to beautiful beaches and inland mountains, Thessaloniki is surely a contender (竞争者) for one of Europe’s best city-break destinations.
What could make it even better? How about a gleaming (闪现) new metro system? All being well, November should see the opening of the main line of an infrastructure megaproject that will eventually connect the city’s downtown to its international airport. Driverless trains will whisk passengers through tunnels whose excavation (挖掘) has added to Thesșaloniki’s already rich catalog of archeological discoveries, many of which will be on display in specially created museum stations.

One week after I started working in Beijing, I decided to visit a place of interest called the Summer Palace. Before setting off, I researched it on the Internet. The Summer Palace is composed mostly of a lake, but it’s surrounded by beautiful greenery and a walkway that circles the lake. It is recommended that you give the Summer Palace about three hours. If you try to walk around it, it could take five or six hours. With that knowledge of it, I set off.
The highlight of the tour had to be the view from the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It sits on the top of a large hill overlooking the lake and is worth a climb. It was built as a place to worship the Buddha. And in the Summer Palace, unlike in most of other places, photography isn’t allowed in most of the buildings. Pictures of most of the Buddhas and the other artifacts are off⁃limits for photographers.
Another highlight was seeing the stage created for the Dowager Empress where she watched operas and other theater items. There are box seats that surround the stage and it was the largest stage created in Imperial China. You could almost imagine royalty reviewing the actors from the boxes and the stage.
I do recommend taking a boat ride if you go, which takes you from one side of the lake to the other side where you can see another set of buildings. And it is fun. You can also rent an electric boat or paddleboat if you want. But since it was just me, I went aboard one of the biggest boats with other people.
I spent another four hours wandering around the Summer Palace. But I didn’t see all of it because it was getting dark. How I wish I could visit it again.
24. What did the author do before setting off for the Summer Palace?
A. Asked others about it. B. Learned something about it.
C. Spent three hours researching it. D. Rented a boat.
25. What does the underlined word “off⁃limits” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Forbidden. B. Allowed. C. Charged. D. Limited.
26. What do we know about the stage mentioned in the text?
A It sits on the top of a hill. B. It is the largest stage all over China.
C. It was for royalty to watch performances. D. Operas are performed there at times.
27. Which of the following correctly describes the author’s tour?
A. She took a boat by herself.
B. She spent four hours in the Summer Palace.
C. She didn’t enjoy the trip because it was too late.
D. She only toured part of the Summer Palace.
C
Have you watched the popular TV series Meet Yourself? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel — an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work — has attracted more attention.
These volunteer trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or nonprofit organizations, and they take form of equal exchanges. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free or discounted accommodations, meals and laundry activities, or classes.
It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation. Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers live in recently. Sanlian Life week magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban residents to get a taste of rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution.
28. Why does the author mention the popular TV series Meet Yourself in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic.
B. To persuade readers to visit Yunnan.
C. To recommend a tourist attraction.
D. To inform readers of the popularity of the TV series.
29. Which is a volunteer trip according to the second paragraph?
A. Cooking in a charity.
B. Caring animals in a zoo.
C. Helping the old at a nursing home.
D. Teaching in exchange for free accommodations while traveling.
30. Which of the following can drive people to work voluntarily while traveling?
A. To earn money.
B. To earn reputation.
C. To experience rural life.
D. To make up their minds to move to the countryside permanently.
31. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. The Popularity of Meet Yourself
B. Volunteer Trips Finds New Popularity
C Make a Difference by Volunteering
D. The Popularity of Volunteer Activities

Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we remember it. One great example of it is how we memorize the alphabet (字母表) when we are little. “Rote memorization can be a useful learning tool in some situations, but its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist and professor of Pepperdine University of the US.
Rote memorization can be useful for test preparation, learning basic facts and information such as vocabulary words or math formulas, and when we are in the early stages of learning something new. Rote memorization has a place in our day to day lives, especially when we need to learn something new or in a quick fashion. It enables us to remember information in situations where doing so is the main thing asked of us, even if it doesn’t lead us to have a deep understanding of that information.
However rote memorization isn’t always the solution to every problem. Information memorized through rote learning is often preserved in the short term but may be forgotten relatively quickly if not actively used. Besides, it often does not promote a deep understanding of the material. Learners may memorize facts or information without truly comprehending their meaning or how they fit into a broader context. And rote memorization tends to focus on memorizing facts and procedures, which may discourage critical thinking or problem-solving skills.
Both rote memorization and meaningful learning have their place. The most important thing to remember is that rote memorization cannot stand in as a replacement for actual learning. Meaningful learning promotes long-term memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.
32. What is Dr. Aldrich Chan’s attitude towards rote memorization?
A. Against. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Approving.
33. Which of the following can be best achieved through rote memorization?
A. Improving study effectiveness in all situations.
B. Applying knowledge flexibly in our daily lives.
C. Obtaining a thorough comprehension of information.
D. Memorizing information at the beginning stages of learning.
34. What is the purpose of Paragraph 3?
A. To compare different types of memorization.
B To present the limitations of rote memorization.
C. To prove the effectiveness of rote memorization.
D. To discuss the advantages of meaningful learning.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Rote Memorization: A Useful Learning Tool
B. Rote Memorizing: No Equal to Understanding
C. Rote Memorization: Way of Meaningful Learning
D. Rote Memorization: Alternative to Deep Learning

The sudden awakening to a rumbling sound was initially mistaken for thunder, but the unmistakable sensation of the ground trembling beneath you quickly dispelled that notion. Realizing you were in the midst of an earthquake, a natural disaster you had only heard tales of, your heart began to race with the urgency of the situation.
The room around you was in a violent dance, each object seemingly alive with chaotic motion. You fought against the tremors to maintain your balance, knowing that swift action was crucial for your safety. With determination, you rose from your bed, navigating the unpredictable terrain towards the door.
Exiting your dwelling, you were met with a scene of pandemonium. The earth’s relentless shaking was accompanied by the ominous sounds of structures succumbing to the force, their collapse echoing through the air. People’s panicked screams and cries for help filled the atmosphere, a testament to the chaos that had been unleashed.
Guided by prior knowledge that doorways can offer relative safety during seismic events, you sought refuge in the nearest one. As you huddled there, the fear was palpable, the ground’s continuous shaking a stark reminder of nature’s raw power.
Time seemed to stretch, each second an eternity, until finally, the earth settled. Cautiously, you emerged from your makeshift shelter, surveying the devastation that the earthquake had wrought. The once-standing edifices now lay in ruins, and in the distance, fires danced, casting an eerie glow over the landscape.
Recalling the survival kit stored in your vehicle, you made your way to the parking lot, hoping it would provide the tools and supplies necessary for immediate needs. Upon arrival, however, you were confronted with a harsh reality: your car, a symbol of escape and independence, was now a victim of the disaster, crushed under the weight of debris from a neighboring structure.
Alone but not defeated, you resolved to remain composed and think with clarity. Scanning your surroundings, you spotted a group of individuals huddled together for comfort and support. Joining them, you found a sense of community in the shared experience, a testament to the human spirit’s resilience in the face of adversity.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Together, we worked to find a safe place to take shelter.

I worked as an advisor for five years and then I retired. The retirement community I live in requires one to be forty-eight years or older. In the community I engage in many activities, oil painting, watercolor painting, stained glass projects. My major activity, however, is golf. Weather permitting, I play every day.

A. It sits on the top of a hill.

30 Which of the following can drive people to work voluntarily while traveling?
A. To earn money.
B. To earn reputation.
C. To experience rural life.
D. To make up their minds to move to the countryside permanently.
31. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. The Popularity of Meet Yourself

However, rote memorization isn’t always the solution to every problem.
B. To present the limitations of rote memorization.
C. To prove the effectiveness of rote memorization.
D. To discuss the advantages of meaningful learning.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Rote Memorization: A Useful Learning Tool
B. Rote Memorizing: No Equal to Understanding
C. Rote Memorization: Way of Meaningful Learning
D. Rote Memorization: Alternative to Deep Learning

I hope this letter finds you well. I’ve been noticing that you’ve been spending a lot of time on video games lately, and I’m genuinely concerned about it. While games can be entertaining, they can also have adverse effects, affecting your health, studies, and social life.
Could we talk about finding a balance? Maybe setting some time limits or exploring new hobbies together could be a good start. Remember, there’s a whole world outside of gaming, and I’m sure you’d enjoy it just as much. I’m here to support you in whatever way I can.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
