Before listening, ask students to look at the picture and answer the question. ·Both of them think they're on the “first”floor, but they are on different floors. Do you know the reason? 偶有所得 Suggested answer: ·The bottom area of a building, on the same level as the land around it, is called the ground floor. In American English this can also be called the first floor. In British English the first floor is one level up from the ground. In American English this is the second floor. 2. Read and discuss. Ask students to read and discuss the pairs of words in the table. Suggested answers: ·Britain English, American English, and Australian English. ·They are different in vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. ·The differences can cauise confusion for non-native speakers. 2. Listen and tick.(Activity 2) Ask students to listen to the second part of the talk and tickthe two pairs of words that they are confused by. 3. Listen and fill. Ask students to listen to thefirst part of the talk again and fill in the blanks. There are many different kinds of English around the world: English, English, English, and many others.There are differences in and grammar, but those are usually not big problems. However, those differences can cause for non-native English speakers. Ask students to try to think of more pairs of words like these. Ask students to read and role-play the conversation in Activity 4. Then have them answer the following questions. ·What misunderstanding has happened? ·How do they clear up the misunderstanding? ·What questions do they ask? Martin explains that pants refers to underwear in British English. ·They clear up the maisunderstanding by asking questions. ·Do you mean...?
