In 1997, a spaceship called Cassini was sent to explore Saturn (土星) and its moons. Now Cassini’s mission (使命) has come to an end.
Scientists made it fall and burn up in 2017. But before that happened the spaceship had made many trips between Saturn and its rings sending photographs and other information back to Earth.
Cassini is a project carried out by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. It took Cassini about seven years to reach Saturn.
Scientists have learned many exciting things from Cassini. In 2005, Cassini sent a space probe (探测器) to the biggest moon, Titan, so scientists could get a closer look at the moon’s surface. One of the most important discoveries Cassini made was that there is warm liquid water (液态水) under the ice that covers one of Saturn’s smaller moons, Enceladus. Scientists believe conditions on Enceladus could be similar to the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth.
Cassini’s mission was supposed to end in 2008, but because it was still in good shape, scientists increased its life to 2017. Cassini performed the last task of its mission on September 15, 2017.
When Cassini ran out of its fuel (燃料) and entered Saturn’s atmosphere (大气层), it burned up. Scientists say it was necessary for Cassini to be totally destroyed (毁坏) so there was no chance that microbes (微生物) from Earth could be harmful to any possible life on Saturn.

2. The passage is mainly about _________.
A. the process of sending Cassini to Saturn B. the moons and rings of Saturn
C. the Cassini’s mission D. the life on the Saturn
3. Scientists could study Titan’s surface because _________.
A. Cassini landed on it B. they wore special glasses
C. it was very easy to reach it D. a space probe was sent there
4. What made scientists think that there might be life on Enceladus?
A. Animals waste was found. B. They heard strange sounds.
C. Some ice was seen to cover it. D. There is warm liquid water on it.
5. What might happen if Cassini wasn’t totally destroyed?
A. It might destroy Saturn’s surface. B. It will fall onto Earth.
C. It might influence Saturn’s possible life. D. It will continue to send back information.

Every morning you get up, wash your face, brush your teeth, eat breakfast and get ready for your day. These daily actions are so common that you don’t think about them much. But what if you were in space?
There is no gravity (重力)there, so weights are not as heavy as they are on earth. When you drop something, it doesn’t fall to the floor. It floats slowly away in the air. This means that astronauts can’t just put down a tool. They need to tie it down.
And how do astronaut drink? In space, water just breaks into small drops and floats in the air. Well, astronauts eat and drink differently in space. They have special place so that their food doesn’t float away. They use special bags for drinks so that the drink stays inside.
Sleep is also different in space. Astronauts tie themselves to the wall so that they don’t float around when they are sleeping. Since they have to work hard, they need to get plenty of rest.
The sun rises and sets so often that it can be confusing. The astronauts have alarms and sometimes music to wake them up.
Exercise is important for astronauts as well. Since there is no gravity and astronauts float instead of walking or running, their muscles become weak very quickly. They have to exercise on special machines everyday so that this doesn’t happen. No one wants to become ill in space and exercise help them stay healthy.
However, it is not all hard work in space. When they are not doing science experiments, writing reports or exercising, there is a little time for fun. They watch movies, read the news and call family members and friends. The astronauts on the International Space Station can even connect to the Internet.

I can’t remember if I was nine or ten years old. I do remember that it was on a camping trip. For some reason, I got into a fight with another boy. It didn’t take long for the bigger boys to make us stop fighting, but in fact I lost. My head was seriously hurt. After the fight we didn’t talk with each other any more.
The next day morning, I was happy because I knew my mom was making some pizza and bringing it to my brother, me and our friends. She kept bringing pizza to us every camping trip for years. Soon she arrived. I saw her smile as my brother and his friends tried to get the big pieces. She made sure of saving the last two pieces for me. I thanked her and started to eat when I saw the boy who fought with me standing against a tree by himself. At that time, something moved in my heart. I walked up to him and gave him one of the pieces. We talked, laughed and ate. And the pizza tasted better than ever before.

When I was a teenager, my parents were never interested in the music I liked. They said to me, “David, the music you listen to is a lot of noise.” In fact, they are not alone. As I’ve grown older, I have often heard people of my age say, “Today’s music is terrible.” Many older people just don’t like new music. But why is that?
The mere exposure effect (曝光效应) may explain this. It means the more we know something, the more we like it. When we are in our early teens, we usually spend a lot of time listening to popular music and discussing it with our friends. So we know the new songs and artists during that time well. After we turn 30 years old, we are busy working and raising our families. We don’t have much time to understand new music. Instead, we like to listen to our old favorites better. According to studies, by the time they turn 33 years old, most people don’t explore new music anymore.
But I think there is another reason for old people’s dislike of new music. Most popular music, after all, is not written for them. It is made for young people. Some kinds of music begin as a rebellion (反抗) by young people against old ways of doing things. These kinds include punk (朋克), rap, hip-hop, heavy metal (重金属) and more. They naturally interest younger listeners.
Do your parents hate the music you like, too? Now, after reading this article, you know there is nothing wrong with that.

A. By listing numbers. B. By making a survey.

9. What’s the writer’s purpose by writing this passage?
A. To introduce different kinds of music.
B. To encourage older people to try new music.
C. To show people’s different opinions on new music.
D. To get the young to understand the old’s dislike of new music.

Loneliness a natural feeling, is not something most people want to experience. When you feel lonely as a result of missing a loved one or a place, or preparing for a time spent away from your friends and family, here are some suggestions for you to avoid it.
Focus on your health. Studies have shown that poor sleep, lack of physical activity and unhealthy food can let you feel tired and sad, causing the feeling of loneliness. Try to get eight hours of sleep every night, try to take part in at least 30 minutes of physical activity, and don’t eat junk food. Eating more fruit and vegetables will also help.
Bring an old hobby back to life. It’s much more difficult to feel lonely if you’re actively enjoying an activity, especially one that you are good at. If you’ve got a hobby that you love, try to spare time for it even if you are busy, such as reading, playing a sport, cooking, painting.
Avoid staying at home all day long. Spending your time in nature will probably improve your feelings and help you get over loneliness. Sunshine makes you feel happier and less focused on your loneliness. You can go hiking, go boating or go on a bike ride if you are not interested in just walking around. You may go for a coffee with your friends or even make big plans so that you have events to look forward to. First, you can think about the possible activities you might want to take part in. Then, spend a few days planning out the event, so that you are fully prepared and stress-free. If possible, include other people in your plan to make your activity more interesting.
All in all, it seems that facing your own loneliness is the first step to avoid loneliness. Do your best to follow the things above. It takes efforts, but it is worth your try.
10. Why do people feel lonely?
A. Because they live in a poor place.
B. Because they miss their loved people.
C. Because they like to experience that feeling.
D. Because they don’t want to stay with their friends and family.
11. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following may lead to loneliness?
A. Junk food. B. Enough sleep. C. Physical activity. D. Fruit and vegetables.
12. What can you learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Spending time planning the event will make us feel stressed.
B. Spending time at home alone can help avoid loneliness.
C. Enjoy the sunshine and we can feel less lonely.
D. It’s impossible to meet friends often.
13. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot(聊天机器人) tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1,000 students, over 89 percent ChatGPT of them have used ChatGPT to help with a homework task.
Developed by Us company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a powerful tool. You can ask it to write stories and emails, create recipes(食谱), and answer all kinds of questions.
Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned(禁止) the use of ChatGPT. In the US, public schools in New York City banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the networks and devices(设备).
The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on tasks. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information.
“It does not build critical-thinking(批判性思维) or problem-solving skills, which are necessary for academic(学术的),” said Jenna Lyle from the New York City Department of Education.
Apart from bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to prevent the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones.
However, not all educators say “no” to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making rules—how both students and teachers use it. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far.
Bhaskar Vira, from the University of Cambridge in the UK, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not wise. “We have to know that AI is a tool people will use. What we need to do is ‘make our learning, teaching and examinations suitable for a new use’,” he told Varsity, the school newspaper of the university.
14. Some schools in the US banned the use of ChatGPT because ______.
A. students may use it to cheat on homework
B. it seldom provides correct information
C. it takes up most of the networks
D. it takes the place of teachers
15. Jenna Lyle thinks that ______.
A. ChatGPT might offer the wrong information
B. ChatGPT is so far the smartest AI chatbot tool
C. using ChatGPT is not good for developing students’ minds
D. ChatGPT is necessary for academic and lifelong success
16. Which opinions NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Using ChatGPT makes students lazy in thinking.
B. The Complete ban on using ChatGPT is not wise.
C. ChatGPT will completely change present education.
D. ChatGPT can be useful for both teachers and students.
17. How is the passage mainly developed?
A. By comparing numbers. B. By giving different opinions.

【答案】例文
How time flies! The term has come to an end. During this year, I have done some meaningful things. The most impressive one is my last volunteer work.
On the morning of March 5th, I went to a nursing home to visit the old with my teacher and classmates by school bus. At the old people’s home, we did a lot of things. We helped the old to sweep the floor, make their beds and take out the rubbish. After that, some of us talked with them. Some read newspapers to them. We also sang and danced together to the old. Before we left, we gave out our gifts to them. How happy they were!
Although I was very tired, I thought volunteering my time to help the old is so meaningful. As the saying goes, the rose is in her hand, the flavor in mine. From this volunteer activity, I learned to take care of the old and got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the old people get better and the look of joy on their faces.
In my opinion, it’s not enough for students to get good grades at school. We should try our best to help others by volunteer work.
