I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh(苛刻的) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard.
Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food festival”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra(秋葵), and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!
Well, the point wasn’t so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another’s company. None of it would have happened if it had been for Happy and Ben’s garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decided to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!
19.According to paragraph 2, people wished they also had a garden so that ________.

“Save the whales!” That’s what the picture on Jake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important; that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighborhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales’ coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake’s hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they’d have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in their direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded, it stayed. Its huge body rested on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers(救助者). A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jack and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save its life.
23.Why did the local people go down to the beach that morning?
A.To swim with the whales. B.To help rescue the whales.

a. The whale disappeared under the sea. b. People turned on the lights of their cars.

The Legendary Bermuda Triangle: A Mystery No More
For years, people have believed that an area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Florida, USA was a dangerous place. They thought planes and boats passing through here were likely to disappear. By 1964, a writer had called the area the “Bermuda Triangle”. The name stuck, and so did the mystery.
In 1945, five US Navy planes, called Flight 19 took off from Florida and never came back. After they disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle, different ideas had begun to spread that the area was a dangerous place. Even before this famous flight, several ships had disappeared in these waters. People had many different ideas about why this happened. Some people even believed that a huge octopus was responsible!
However, scientists believe that weather is a part of the problem. Unusually shaped clouds above the area create strong winds that go down into the water, creating huge tsunami waves that can take down boats or low-flying planes. And many researchers believe that there’s no mystery at all. Ship goes down and plane accidents happen all over the world. It just seems to happen more in the Bermuda Triangle because there’s more traffic.
The Bermuda Triangle is also one of the deepest areas of the Atlantic, with some areas being 8 km deep. So, remains are hard to find, which makes the disappearances seem even more mysterious.
In 2011, the Flight 19 planes were found, showing that they didn’t completely disappear. But no matter how much evidence there is that the Bermuda Triangle is no more dangerous than any other part of the ocean, many still believe that you mustn’t go there.
27.The third paragraph mainly talks about the ________ of the accidents in the area.
A.disadvantages B.facts C.causes D.results
28.It is hard to find the remains in the Bermuda Triangle because ________.
A.it’s too deep B.the water runs too quickly
C.they completely disappeared D.there are dangerous animals
29.The writer writes the passage mainly to ________.
A.introduce the Bermuda Triangle to people
B.tell people the history of the Bermuda Triangle
C.encourage people to visit the Bermuda Triangle
D.show people how to pass the Bermuda Triangle safely
30.Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the Pacific Ocean
B.People had many different ideas about what caused the disappearances.
C.Evidence shows that the Bermuda Triangle is the most dangerous area in the world
D.By the time Flight 19 disappeared, the area had already been called the “Bermuda Triangle”.

Life is filled with ups and downs, and what matters is how you deal with each situation. Here’s how you can create a new chapter in your life. Let’s start!
It is an amazing way to find people that have gone through the same problems as you have and since they know how you feel, they will be able to help you better. When you start learning from others, you notice the different ways that made them successful.
How can you move on when you have failed again and again? Sometimes we might feel that we have tried out so much and still nothing is working out for us. Giving up is easy, but continuing with the pain is hard but worth it. In this kind of situation, the only way is to try everything in your hands or something that you never ever dreamed of, and who knows, they might actually make things better for you.
In order to move on from every failure, you must let go of the past and guilt. Terrible feelings are always going to lead to an exactly opposite effect. They are only going to drain you out in the long run. You have to avoid them. Forgive the people that have hurt you in the past and start new adventures towards the path of future.
Most people get busy doing the things that don’t get them anywhere. For example, many people turn to alcohol (酒精) to lower the stress, which just kills them slowly. DON’T. Don’t follow the path to anger and destroy what is good for you. Picture your goals in your mind and make sensible steps towards them with each passing day. Let nothing stand in your way.
A.Get Enough Sleep
B.Learn From Others
C. Let Go Of Your Past
D.Do What Actually Works

It’s a good way to listen to Chinese songs or movies. Also, practise it as much as you can. Speaking and listening are both important in learning languages. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, just speak it aloud, and be confident in yourself. If you have any questions, you can ask me for help.
Of course, I have changed a lot. I used to be shy, but now I become more outgoing and join lots of clubs. I didn’t like sports at all in the past. Now I’m active in all kind of sports and I become strong and fit.
Hope to see you soon.
