In 2010, my mother gave me her rather simple but beautiful old “secretary desk”. It easily fit into my tiny room and made me feel safe and confident when writing—though I often had to put file folders (文件夹) and books on the floor around me due to the storage space.
A few years into my writing journey, we moved into a bigger home and I had my own office. One day, while we were shopping at a market, my husband Bill stopped, “I want to buy this big desk for you, sweetie! It’s perfect for my writer!”
“Thanks, but I don’t need this!” I replied.
“Why?” he felt surprised “You must be afraid of something!”
“No!” I said, “I just feel good when writing at my little desk!”
Weeks later, while working in my new office, I looked around at so many folders, books and papers lying all over the floor but couldn’t find what I needed. I suddenly realized the tiny desk wasn’t appropriate anymore! “Is Bill right?” I thought, “Maybe I do need a bigger desk.”
Unable to write, I pulled C. JoyBell C.’s book of pootry titled All Things Dance Like Dragon (蜻蜓) from the bookshelf, and her words about belief jumped off the page into my heart. She talked about how she’d trained herself to love the feeling of not knowing where she was going, and just believing that as she opened up her wings and flew off in an unknown direction, things would work out.

Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We all can learn much from our mistakes. However. too much of it may influence your brain and your life. Negative self-talk is that little voice in your bead. It says you are not good enough. It reminds you of all your faults and mistakes.
Dr. Hughes, an educator and researcher on how the mind controls behavior, said that some good students who study hard normally do not do well in a test because of “test anxiety”.
Lindsay was one of Hughes’ best students at a community college. She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all of her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hughes asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She wondered why she had trouble remembering what she had studied. She did not trust that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk, which can influence a student’s grades.
Dr. Hughes took Lindsay’s negative self-talks and turned them into positive questions. Before a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why am I so relaxed when I take an exam? Why do I remember everything I study for an exam? ★
Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points higher than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A”. on the final exam in Hughes’ class. Lindsay left community college and went to a four-year university She continued to use the method of positive self-talk. When Dr. Hughes visited her a year later, she had good news to share: she had got straight A’s on all of her exams.
Dr. Hughes saw student after student succeed with his method. More importantly, they got their self-confidence back. And he does not just help his students. He also encourages his friends and neighbors to get rid of negative self-talk gradually in their life. In a television interview, he said, “We can program ourselves for success in class or in life, or we can program ourselves for failure.”

“So, a bigger desk might symbolize bigger possibilities. Why not leave my comfort zone for a wider world?” I said to myself.

Why do I remember everything I study for an exam?”都是积极的自我对话,所以空格处也应是积极的自我提问。选项A“为什么我相信我的答案?”符合这一要求。故选A。

【答案】
例文
How I Have Changed
How time flies! My life has changed a lot in the past two years.
I used to be very short, but now I’m much taller and stronger than before. The biggest change in my life was my hobby. Two years ago I used to play computer games all the time, but now I realize it is a waste of time. I always do sports and read books now. This is the most important change because health is very important. Two years ago I was afraid of speaking English. But now another change is that I like making speeches in public. Two years ago I was quiet and shy. So you see, I’m much braver and outgoing than before.
All in all, I’m happy with these changes, because they have brought me the happiness of growth.
