My family first moved to Colorado 22 years ago. Los Angeles was too expensive and it was difficult to find well-paying jobs and affordable housing. Colorado became our next dream place. Settling into a small town in the Front Range, my parents found hard jobs.
Growing up in this small town, I remember my parents working hard to get past the language barrier. My mom, especially, tried her best to ensure she knew all that she needed to know about like my parent-teacher meetings and extracurricular (课外的) activities. One of those extracurricular activities that I signed up for was football. At that age, football was cool and all, but I was more into playing Pokémon and other video games. Football didn’t draw me in.
Big football tournaments (联赛) would come around like the World Cup, the Copa América and the Gold Cup, and the Mexican National Team would play in these tournaments. I would sit there in our living room and unmindfully watch the games while my parents would go crazy with enthusiasm ( 热情). I would sit there and play my game. My dad would look over and tell me that I should be paying attention carefully to the game and that I should care more about whether Mexico would win the match than my video games.
Both of my parents’ workspaces were crowded (占满) with other workers. My mom worked with people from all over Latin America. Everyone’s topic of choice at work would always turn to how their national football team was doing. It was a way to show pride in the countries where they had grown up.
I grew up loving football more and more. The more I learned about my Mexican roots (根), the more I tried to find ways to express pride in them in the United States.

B. Play video games with the author.
C. Learn English in their living room.
D. Guess who would be the winner.
7. The author’s mom and her workmates talked about football in order to _________.
A. build a closer friendship

In February, when a terrible earthquake hit Türkiye and Syria, hundreds of thousands of children watched their world fall apart.
More than 50,000 people died in Türkiye alone. Homes and schools were damaged or destroyed. Families moved to make shift (临时替代的) “container cities,” often far from friends. Many children were affected emotionally. According to a UN report, more than 5.4 million children across the quake zone are at risk of developing mental diseases. “I’ve spoken to many families who say. ‘I don’t recognize my own children,’” says Ceyda Yelkalan, the communications manager of Save the Children Türkiye.
What these children need to heal (康复), Yelkalan says, is a place where they can focus on just being kids. That means creating new safe spaces where children can do something fun, like playing soccer. Through “Pitches of Hope” — a project created by Mastercard and put into action by Save the Children — Yelkalan and her teammates are building those spaces. Throughout southern Türkiye, they are restoring soccer pitches (球场) that were destroyed and inviting kids to join soccer-related activities, believing in the healing power of sports.
Mehmet Ali Akil, who is Save the Children’s child protection coordinator (协调人), and his teammates developed a series of soccer-related games that encourage teamwork and improve mental well-being. Programs like Pitches of Hope are much needed, he says, since children can, and often do, become separated from their family and friends after disasters. So he developed activities that focus on increasing communication and encouraging respectful and kind behavior.
One girl said that she hadn’t played soccer before because she thought it was a game for men. “Now she’s saying ‘I have more courage,’” Yelkalan says. “These children are learning life skills and the importance of equality and inclusion of every child. They’re getting away from the worries of daily life and making new friendships.”
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the earthquake?
A. The cause of it. B. What effect it had.
C. What people think about it. D. The rescue efforts following it.
9. What does Yelkalan expect of Pitches of Hope?
A. It can teach children how to stay safe during an earthquake.
B. It can improve children’s sporting performance.
C. It can heal the children’s physical wounds.
D. It can offer children a world of joy.
10. What is one purpose of the games developed by Akil and his teammate?
A. To change the children’s bad study habits.
B. To teach children how to lead a sports team.
C. To encourage children to connect with each other.
D. To give children chances to get together with their family.
11. What does the author want to show by mentioning the girl in the last paragraph?
A. The limitations of the project. B. The success of the project.
C. The details of the project. D. The future of the project.
D
A company, called Mario Cucinella Architects, has made the House of Music, a solar-powered (太阳能的) building in Pieve di Cento that celebrates the town’s long-standing musical tradition. Designed to represent an orchestra (管弦乐队), the building is made up of nine small music rooms that connect to a central open space. The curved oak front not only helps to make sound louder like an instrument’s music box, but also ensures high levels of energy efficiency (效率).
Finished in 2017 after four years of planning and building, the House of Music of Pieve di Cento is located in the former Lamborghini (a famous Italian car company) production area that had been changed into a park. The recently completed building gets an advantage from a cycling path that connects the House of Music to the town center and beyond to an area to the south. There is also a wooden bench running around the building and creating resting places facing the park.
To prevent heat, cold, or noise from passing through the building, Mario Cucinella Architects used a special design for the House of Music. The flat roofs are topped with a series of curved and raised disks (圆盘) that help make unwanted sunlight change its direction and are engineered to bring more natural air into the building. The energy-efficient design was influenced by the architects’ (建筑师的) study of the site.
The nine music rooms open up to a central outdoor space that serves as a meeting area. The architects noted, “The House of Music’s outside lighting makes it a comforting place that encourages people to continue to do musical activities after the earthquake that shook the area in 2012.”
12. What was the purpose of building the House of Music?
A. To praise the town’s musical tradition.
B. To remember a famous local musician.
C. To attract people outside the town to visit.
D. To tell people about the importance of music.
13. What do we know about the House of Music?
A. It started to be built in 2017.
B. It is located in the town center.
C. It is supported by a famous car producer.
D. It is connected with other areas by a cycling path.
14. The architects designed the lighting mainly in order to ______.
A. encourage people to keep up their musical activities
B. warn people of the danger of earthquakes
C. make the building noticeable and attractive
D. make full use of energy
15. What is the best title of this passage?
A. A solar-powered orchestra.
B. The advantages of solar-powered buildings.
C A solar-powered House of Music.
D. The future of solar-powered buildings.

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran away. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "Your mom only has one eye!"
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted(面对) her that day and said, "If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?"
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"
And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have got the wrong address." And she was soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion(同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed (流出) a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

3. Which place may have a disadvantage for ski lovers?
A. Kitzbühel. B. Val Gardena. C. Alpbach. D. Stowe.
【答案】1. D 2. B 3. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四个滑雪胜地。
【1题详解】
细节理解题。根据Kitzbühel,Austria部分“Kitzbühel also attracts a host of festive fans with its fairy lights, and performances of jazz bands.”(基茨比厄尔的彩灯,以及爵士乐队的表演,吸引了不少节日爱好者。)可知,游客们可以在基茨比厄尔欣赏现场的音乐节目。故选D。
【2题详解】
推理判断题。根据Val Gardena,Italy部分“The three towns that make up Val Gardena—busy Ortisei, peaceful Santa Cristina and the higher Selva—traditionally go big on the festive season, combining their Italian, Austrian and Ladin heritage (遗产).”(瓦尔加德纳由三个城镇组成,分别是繁忙的奥蒂塞、平静的圣克里斯蒂娜和较高的塞尔瓦。传统上,这三个城镇在节日期间会大张旗鼓,将意大利、奥地利和拉登的传统融合在一起。)可知,瓦尔加德纳吸引游客的应该是它多样的文化。故选B。
【3题详解】
推理判断题。根据Alpbach,Austria部分“Low at 1,000 meters, it may not always have snow on the ground.”(在海拔1000米的地方,地面上不一定总有雪。)可知,在阿尔卑巴克,因为是在海拔1000米的地方,地面上不一定总有雪,所以对滑雪爱好者来说这是个不足之处。故选C。

With all my love to you.
Your mother
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I think of you all the time and I'm sorry that I went to your house and scared your children. I had never thought my visit would bring so much unhappiness to you. However, I was really so happy when I heard you were coming for the reunion, I missed you day and night. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I'm terribly sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.
Paragraph 2:
You see, when you were very little, you got into a terrible accident, as a result of which you lost one of your precious eyes. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you have to grow up with just one eye. It was too much for you—a young soul to endure such a cruel fact and a possible future full of challenges. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world in my place with that eye.
With all my love to you.
Your mother
