A full guide about the College, its buildings and its history, may also be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge. We welcome visitors, but please remember that the College is a place where researchers and students live and work. Please keep to the route marked on the attached map, follow instructions from our staff, and do not go anywhere marked “private”. First Court Much of the College is made up of quadrangles(四方院) or “courts”. There are three running west to east from the Great Gate to the river, known simply as First, Second and Third. First Court was built in 1511 to the south of the old hospital and contained living quarters, the original chapel(小教堂), library, hall and kitchens. The Chapel The 19th century chapel was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, apart from the tower which was an afterthought made possible by a former member of St John’s College called Henry Hoare, who unfortunately died before he could pay for it all! Chapel Court The style of Chapel Court in the south range is Tudor, the west range Victorian and the remainder built by Sir Edward Maufe in 1938-40. Part of the west range was transformed into a new College library in 1994. The arms above the archway in the centre of the north range are those of John Fisher, carved by the famous sculptor, Eric Gill, who favors Catholic methods. 21. When touring in the St John’s College, what should visitors remember? A. Private places are not accessible to tourists. B. Tourists can choose specific routes randomly. C. A full guide of the College is provided for free. D. Researchers and students can be tourists’ guides. 22. What can be inferred about Chapel Court? A. It is primarily a modern structure. B. It integrates the artistic elements from the east. C. It features a mix of different architectural styles. D. It is a single-style building with minor alterations. 23. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A history book. B. A visitor guide. C. An academic paper. D. An architecture magazine. B My wife and I enjoy a well-built home with a large yard. Our electricity comes from a pole in the street, our water from the city water company, and our natural gas from the natural gas supply company. We live in South Texas, the energy center of the world, so what’s there to worry about? That’s what a lot of folks thought until a devastating winter storm hit Texas. Many people were left without water power or gas. Temperatures inside even the best-built homes were dangerously low. Fortunately, our electricity and gas stayed on. Even if they hadn’t, we were prepared for the worst. If we had lost our power and gas, we might have been uncomfortable, but we would have made it through thanks to our proactive preparation and my self- sufficient skill set. My knowledge of getting through that type of situation comes from a lifetime of surviving in difficult environments. I grew up on a farm in rural Arkansas, where my family was almost totally self-sustaining. Later in life, I lived for three years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where living off the grid (电网) was a normal lifestyle and basic survival techniques were a practiced necessity. So, although my wife and I are currently on the grid, I’m familiar with what it takes to live a comfortable lifestyle when the power is cut off. Perhaps the most important thing you can do to ensure your success living off the grid is to develop an energy-conscious mindset. Living off the grid doesn’t have to be a minimalist lifestyle like the kind I lived on the farm, but some of the same principles hold true, such as doing away with a clothes dryer and planning your wash days around the weather. 24. What does the underlined word “devastating” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Demanding. B. Disastrous. C. Delightful. D. Developing. 25. What would the writer do if he lost electricity and gas? A. Generate electricity himself. B. Make proactive preparations. C. Improve self-sufficient skills. D. Lead a relatively normal life. 26. How did the writer know about living through bad situations? A. By growing up on a farm. B. By studying from the books. C. By living a comfortable lifestyle. D. By learning from his experience. 27. What is the best way to live off the grid? A. To be aware of saving energy. B. To adopt a minimalist lifestyle. C. To wash clothes on a rainy day. D. To buy a high-quality clothes dryer. C Thailand uses the phrase “land of smiles” to describe itself in tourist brochures and advertising campaigns, and rightly so. Visitors to Thailand can expect to be greeted with a smile when they leave the airport, get into a taxi or rental car and again when they enter a hotel. What makes it so easy for Thai people to smile at their visitors? The head of Thailand’s tourist bureau says that it is “in the nature of the people”. “The Thais are naturally happy,” he says with a smile, and they are glad to share that happiness with others. This attitude seems to be very much appreciated by the more than five million tourists who visit Thailand each year. The country ranks high on the list of places to which visitors want to return. The reason most often stated is that the people are friendly and courteous Some other Asian destinations are not as well received. Bali in Indonesia ranks high on the list. These reports raise the question of whether certain nationalities are naturally more courteous than others. People may experience more friendliness in Thailand than in other countries. This may have more to do with the place than the people. Travel writers point out that cities are always stressful, hurried places, with little to offer in the ways of smiles and welcome. Bangkok is not as friendly as other places in the surrounding Thai countryside. Remote (遥远的) towns and villages in China, for example, offer visitors a warm welcome, with smiles from children. Perhaps it should also be pointed out that polite, patient, smiling visitors will most be greeted similarly, no matter which country they are in. 28. What does the underlined phrase “land of smiles” mean from the passage? A. Thailand is a funny country. B. Thai people are kind and friendly. C. The tourists must smile all the time in Thailand. D. There is a piece of land in Thailand where smiling is common. 29. What will you find when you visit Thailand? A. You can see smiles everywhere. B. You have to smile to rent a car. C. Everybody in the streets will smile at you. D. When you step into the country, you can’t leave it. 30. What can we know about the tourists returning from Thailand? A. They are thirsty to leave it. B. They will never visit it again. C. They are willing to visit it a second time. D. They aren’t allowed to visit it some time later. 31. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. Stressful places need fewer smiles. B. People in remote areas seem friendlier than those in the cities. C. It’s the people rather than the place that make you experience more friendliness. D. Visitors to Bangkok are not as polite as visitors to any other city in the world. D If the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. However, there are places in the rocks of the earth’s crust where it isn’t strongly held together — where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake! The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Seven hundred people died and property (财产) damage amounted to about $425,000,000. The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake. One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed. Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people. 32. The underlined word “vibration” in the first paragraph probably means “________”. A. shaking B. force C. energy D. losing 33. Which of the following is the correct order of the years when the earthquakes happened? ①the San Francisco Earthquake ②the earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal ③the earthquake in Calabria and Sicily ④the earthquake in central Italy ⑤the earthquake in Gansu Province ⑥the Tokyo quake A. ③④⑤⑥②① B. ⑤⑥②①③④ C. ②①③④⑤⑥ D. ①③④②⑤⑥ 34. According to the passage, the earthquake that killed the most people happened in ________. A. Portugal B. Italy C. Japan D. China 35. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places B. the fires following the San Francisco Earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did C. there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake Are there life lessons in swimming? Swimming is so much more than just about the stroke or a good kick. ___36___ What might it say then? •Be patient with the things you want to learn. Swimming is very technical and requires lots of practice of drills and skills. This requires patience and no matter how talented you are, you won’t master swimming within a week. Regardless of your swimming proficiency (熟练), you will always have something to learn. This makes swimming amazing yet disappointing. There is always the next step, just like in life. ___37___ •You learn how to deal with failure and setbacks. It’s not always going to be fair. And things won’t always go our way. There will be times when no matter how hard we work the results don’t match our effort in practice. These moments hurt, and they make you realise you are not as good as you think you are. ___38___ To overcome. And to be humble. •___39___ Ever wonder why so many swimmers seem to have superhuman speed when it comes to relay legs? I’ve seen it so many times, from my own swimming, dropping nearly a second on my best time in the 50 m freestyle, to Jason Lezak and his otherworldly 46.0 at the Beijing Olympics—there is something that happens when you race for something besides just yourself. •Losing is as important as winning. Winning is great while losing is terrible. We can agree to that. ___40___ You will lose many times during your swimming career, but being able to lean across the lane line and shake the winner’s hand means that you conquered (战胜) yourself. Similarly, being a champion is more than just being the first swimmer to the wall—it’s being humble in victory, and setting an example for those to come. Swimming is not only a sport; it is a lifestyle. The lessons that you learn from swimming will follow you through life. A. Being a team makes everyone better. B. You do not always get what you want. C. It can also speak meaningfully into our lives. D. But they also teach you how to be mentally tough. E. It teaches you to be mindful of the process and not to rush things. F But I believe that how we do both matters more than the outcome. G. When I walk in the halls at school, I have to squeeze in between the bigger kids to get by. At the playground, sometimes even little kids try to boss me around. Mia, my best friend, is so tall that when she walks, I have to jog to keep up with her. I used to try to make myself taller whenever I could, but I was the same height every time. Frustrating! “Don’t worry,” Mum always said. “Being small has its advantages.” “Really? I could never notice any.” One day, Mrs. Alvarez announced to the class that we’d be putting on a spring play. I practiced all the lines. But at the audition, when I walked up to the stage, Mrs. Alvarez cried, “You’ll be perfect as the elf! You’re just the right size for the costume.” I never even got a chance to deliver the lines I’d practiced. Back home I grumbled (咕哝) to Mum that I had been made an elf. But she bet I would be the best elf. To please her, I went to rehearsals, though I only had two lines. Mia got the lead role — a girl wandering through a magical fairy forest in search of her lost dog. In the last scene, she finds a box under a giant mushroom, and when she opens it, her dog jumps out. Mrs. Alvarez’s dog, Prince, played the dog role. She brought him to all the rehearsals, and when he wasn’t onstage, we got to play with him, but he seemed to like me best. The night of the show, my first line came early. Since my only other line was toward the end, I waited offstage, playing with Prince. Finally, the grand end came, and Prince was brought onstage inside the box. But the box was found empty. Mrs. Alvarez said, “A burst of noise frightened him away. I see him under the stage!” “How can we get Prince out from beneath the stage?” Mrs. Alvarez asked. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Having no other ideas, Mrs. Alvarez nodded to me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 江西省武宁县第二中学2024-2025学年度上学期开学考 高三英语试卷 时间120分钟 总分150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话,每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项,并标在试卷的相应位置。 How long will the man stay at home? 21. Part of the west range was transformed into a new College library in 1994. The arms above the archway in the centre of the north range are those of John Fisher, carved by the famous sculptor, Eric Gill, who favors Catholic methods.(南山脉的教堂庭院风格是都铎式的,西山脉是维多利亚式的,其余部分由爱德华·莫夫爵士(Sir Edward Maufe)于1938-40年建造。 根据文章第一段“This brochure offers a short introduction to St John’s College as you follow the tourist route through the College. A full guide about the College, its buildings and its history, may also be purchased from the Porters’ Lodge. B。 B My wife and I enjoy a well-built home with a large yard. Our electricity comes from a pole in the street, our water from the city water company, and our natural gas from the natural gas supply company. We live in South Texas, the energy center of the world, so what’s there to worry about? That’s what a lot of folks thought until a devastating winter storm hit Texas. Many people were left without water, power or gas. B 25. D 26. D 27. 由文章第二段“Many people were left without water, power or gas. Temperatures inside even the best-built homes were dangerously low. 由文章第二段“If we had lost our power and gas, we might have been uncomfortable, but we would have made it through thanks to our proactive preparation and my self- sufficient skill set.(如果我们失去了电和汽油,我们可能会感到不舒服,但多亏了我们积极的准备和我自给自足的技能,我们会挺过来的。)” 由文章第三段“My knowledge of getting through that type of situation comes from a lifetime of surviving in difficult environments. I grew up on a farm in rural Arkansas, where my family was almost totally self-sustaining. Later in life, I lived for three years in Fairbanks, Alaska, where living off the grid (电网) was a normal lifestyle and basic survival techniques were a practiced necessity. 由文章最后一段“Perhaps the most important thing you can do to ensure your success living off the grid is to develop an energy-conscious mindset. 故选A项。 C Thailand uses the phrase “land of smiles” to describe itself in tourist brochures and advertising campaigns, and rightly so. B 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第一段“Thailand uses the phrase “land of smiles” to describe itself in tourist brochures and advertising campaigns, and rightly so. Visitors to Thailand can expect to be greeted with a smile when they leave the airport, get into a taxi or rental car and again when they enter a hotel.(泰国在旅游手册和广告宣传中使用“微笑之国”这个词来形容自己,这是正确的。 Thai people are kind and friendly.(泰国人民善良友好。)。 根据第一段“Visitors to Thailand can expect to be greeted with a smile when they leave the airport, get into a taxi or rental car and again when they enter a hotel. What makes it so easy for Thai people to smile at their visitors? The head of Thailand’s tourist bureau says that it is “in the nature of the people”. “The Thais are naturally happy,” he says with a smile, and they are glad to share that happiness with others.(到泰国旅游的游客在离开机场、乘坐出租车或租车以及入住酒店时都会受到微笑的欢迎。 故选A。 根据第二段“This attitude seems to be very much appreciated by the more than five million tourists who visit Thailand each year. The country ranks high on the list of places to which visitors want to return.(这种态度似乎得到了每年来泰国旅游的500多万游客的赞赏。 根据最后一段“These reports raise the question of whether certain nationalities are naturally more courteous than others. Remote (遥远的) towns and villages in China, for example, offer visitors a warm welcome, with smiles from children.(这些报告提出了一个问题,即某些民族是否天生比其他民族更有礼貌。 B。 D If the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. A. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places B. the fires following the San Francisco Earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did C. there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段“However, there are places in the rocks of the earth’s crust where it isn’t strongly held together — where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!(然而,地壳岩石中有一些地方没有牢固地结合在一起——那里存在断层。 故选A。 根据第二段“The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.(北美最著名的地震是1906年旧金山大地震)”、“One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755.(1755年,葡萄牙里斯本发生了欧洲最著名的地震之一)”、“In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.(1908年,在卡拉布里亚和西西里岛,一场地震造成约7.5万人死亡。1915年,在意大利中部,数百个城镇和村庄遭到破坏,3万人死亡)”以及第三段“Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. Seven hundred people died and property (财产) damage amounted to about $425,000,000. The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.(北美最著名的地震是1906年旧金山大地震。 Are there life lessons in swimming? Swimming is so much more than just about the stroke or a good kick. ___36___ What might it say then? •Be patient with the things you want to learn. Swimming is very technical and requires lots of practice of drills and skills. This requires patience and no matter how talented you are, you won’t master swimming within a week. Regardless of your swimming proficiency (熟练), you will always have something to learn. This makes swimming amazing yet disappointing. There is always the next step, just like in life. ___37___ •You learn how to deal with failure and setbacks. It’s not always going to be fair. And things won’t always go our way. There will be times when no matter how hard we work, the results don’t match our effort in practice. F. But I believe that how we do both matters more than the outcome. G. You need to adopt the daily routines and habits that will get you there. 【答案】36 C 37. E 38. D 39. A 40. 【36题详解】 由上文“Swimming is so much more than just about the stroke or a good kick. C“It can also speak meaningfully into our lives. 【37题详解】 由上文“This requires patience and no matter how talented you are, you won’t master swimming within a week. Regardless of your swimming proficiency (熟练), you will always have something to learn. This makes swimming amazing yet disappointing. There is always the next step, just like in life. 可知,游泳需要耐心,总有东西要学,本空应继续讨论在游泳中要学会的耐心技能,E选项“It teaches you to be mindful of the process and not to rush things. 【38题详解】 由上文“You learn how to deal with failure and setbacks. It’s not always going to be fair. And things won’t always go our way. There will be times when no matter how hard we work, the results don’t match our effort in practice. These moments hurt, and they make you realise you are not as good as you think you are. 可知,本空谈论游泳带来的精神层面的好处,而D选项“But they also teach you how to be mentally tough. 【39题详解】 由下文“Ever wonder why so many swimmers seem to have superhuman speed when it comes to relay legs? I’ve seen it so many times, from my own swimming, dropping nearly a second on my best time in the 50 m freestyle, to Jason Lezak and his otherworldly 46.0 at the Beijing Olympics—there is something that happens when you race for something besides just yourself. 故选A。 【40题详解】 由上文“Losing is as important as winning. Winning is great while losing is terrible. We can agree to that. 和下文“You will lose many times during your swimming career, but being able to lean across the lane line and shake the winner’s hand means that you conquered (战胜) yourself. Similarly, being a champion is more than just being the first swimmer to the wall—it’s being humble in victory, and setting an example for those to come. F选项“But I believe that how we do both matters more than the outcome. Forty-odd years ago, I sat in my first-grade classroom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】“How can we get Prince out from beneath the stage?” Mrs. Alvarez asked. Meanwhile, the audience began to whisper and someone even stretched their necks. Mrs. Alvarez and some girls tried to call Prince’s name, but there was no response. Worried about my little friend and our performance, I visually measured the room under the stage and thought of my size. “Maybe I can get him out. I’m small enough.” My words suddenly cut through the constant calling of “Prince”. Having no other ideas, Mrs. Alvarez nodded to me. So I crawled inch by inch until I found Prince curled up like a ball. I raised my hand, saying, “It s me, Prince. Come here.” Luckily, Prince recognized me and nuzzled my fingers. When we came out, I knew it was time to say my last line, “Yes, I am the small elf who can bring good luck!” With thunderous applause hovering over the hall, I saw Mum in the audience, my eyes beaming with joy. She winked at me as if to say, “Look, being small has its advantage, right?” 词汇激活 行为类 ①蜷缩:curl up / huddle up ②轻推:nuzzle / push gently ③眨眼:wink / blink 情绪类 ①焦急:anxious / worried ②幸运地:luckily / fortunately ③高兴:beaming with joy / be full of happiness 【点睛】[高分句型1] Worried about my little friend and our performance, I visually measured the room under the stage and thought of my size.(使用了过去分词作状语) [高分句型2] With thunderous applause hovering over the hall, I saw Mum in the audience, my eyes beaming with joy.
