Four astronauts headed to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday where they will oversee the arrivals of two new rocketships during their half- year stay.
SpaceX’s Falcon rocket was launched from Kennedy Space Center, carrying NASA’s Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps and Russia’s Alexander Grebenkin. The astronauts should reach the orbiting lab on Tuesday. They will replace a crew from the US, Denmark, Japan and Russia, who have been there since August.
“When are you getting here already?” space station commander Andreas Mogensen asked via Twitter, after three days of delay due to high wind. SpaceX Launch Control termed it “fashionably late”. There was almost another postponement Sunday night. A small leak in the seal of the SpaceX capsule’s hatch caused a last- minute flurry (忙乱) of reviews, but it was thought safe for the whole mission.
The new crew’s six- month stay includes the arrival of two rocketships ordered by NASA.Boeing’s new Starliner capsule with test pilots is due in late April. A month or two later, Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser, a mini shuttle, should arrive. It is for delivering supplies to the station, but not passengers yet.
Epps, who is from New York, is the second Black woman assigned to a long station mission. She said before the flight that she was especially proud to be a role model for girls, especially for Black girls, demonstrating that spaceflight “is an option for them, and that this is not just for other people”.
Also new to space are Dominick, a Navy pilot, and Grebenkin, a former Russian military officer. Barratt, a doctor on his third mission, is the oldest full- time astronaut to fly in space. He turns 65 in April. As for his age, he said before the flight, “As long as we stay healthy and fit and engaged, we’re good to fly.”
4. Why were the four astronauts sent to the ISS?
A. To train test pilots for Starliner. B. To monitor the new rocketships.
C. To deliver supplies to the station. D. To replace the crew on the station.
5. What delayed the astronauts’ arrival?
A. The leak in the capsule. B. Bad weather conditions.
C. An interview with the media. D. Repair work on the rocket.
6. What do we know about Dominick?
A. He worked as an officer in the army. B. He was a full- time astronaut from Russia.
C. He performed the task for the first time. D. He was in charge of the space program.
7. What do Epps’ words suggest?
A. Females are capable of investigating space.
B. Age is a decisive factor in space tasks.
C. Her work makes her a role model for girls.
D. Space technology is a great challenge for girls.

If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (AI), you’re not alone. A new study from University of Waterloo researchers found that people had more difficulty than was expected distinguishing who is a real person and who is artificially generated.
The Waterloo study saw 260 participants provided with 20 unlabeled pictures: 10 of which were of real people obtained from Google searches, and the other 10 generated by Stable Diffusion or DALL-E, two commonly used AI programs that generate images.
Participants were asked to label each image as real or AI-generated and explain why they made their decision. Only 61% of participants could tell the difference between AI-generated people and real ones, far below the 85% threshold (门槛) that researchers expected. “People are not as adept at making the distinction as they think they are,” said Andreea Pocol, a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo.
Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI-generated content - but their assessments weren’t always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing. “People who are just doomscrolling (滚动) or don’t have time won’t pick up on these clues,” Pocol said.
Pocol added that the extremely rapid rate at which AI technology is developing makes it particularly difficult to understand the potential for malicious or illegal action posed by AI-generated images. The pace of academic research and legislation (立法) isn’t often able to keep up: AI-generated images have become even more realistic since the study began in late 2022.
“Disinformation isn’t new, but the tools of disinformation have been constantly shifting and progressing,” Pocol said. “It may get to a point where people, no matter how trained they are, will still struggle to differentiate real images from fakes. That’s why we need to develop tools to identify and counter this.”
8. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Expert. B. Quick. C. Alarmed. D. Puzzled.
9. What decreased the accuracy of the result of the experiment?
A. Ignoring facial expressions. B. Drawing a conclusion in a hurry.
C. Lacking professional guidance. D. Failing to distinguish the details.
10. What’s Pocol’s advice on dealing with disinformation?
A. Providing people with related training. B. Banning the spread of fake information.
C. Doing some field research in person. D. Developing practical tools to identify it.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Methods of distinguishing disinformation. B. Threats caused by AI-generated images.
C. Difficulties in telling AI-generated images. D. Differences between artificial and real images.

Offer a seagull (海鸥) fresh fish and chips, and they’ll take the fish every time. UK researchers have discovered that, given a choice, seagulls prefer seafood to human-made options.
In fact, finds the study, even seagulls raised on bread and cat food will choose fish. “Our results suggest that, even when raised on an ‘urban’ diet of foods found only around people, these chicks might be unlikely to seek out urban foods as adults,” says lead author Emma Inzani, a PhD researcher at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation in the University of Exeter, UK. “Human- associated foods are often both reliably present and easy to obtain — but when fish is available they clearly prefer it.”
The team of seagull researchers has previously found that seagulls are more likely to want food that has been handled by people rather than left alone, but they’re less likely to steal from people who stare them down.
In this latest study,27 herring gulls (银鸥) were raised in captivity (圈养). The birds had all been rescued after falling off roofs in Cornwall, and were later freed. Half of the chicks had access to food that was 80% bread and cat food, and 20% fish and mussels (贻贝) . The other half of the chicks got the opposite spread.
At regular intervals every few days, the researchers presented the baby gulls with bowls of all four foods. and tracked what they chose. All of the birds consistently ate the fish, and very few of them ever tried the bread.
“Animals can live and explore urban areas for human food waste,” says senior author Dr. Neeltje Boogert. “However, this does not necessarily mean they’re thriving or that they prefer this food, rather than making the best of a bad situation,” adding, “More research is needed to investigate how the food young animals receive affects their later life, including their food choices, health and breeding.”
12. What do seagulls like best according to-UK researchers?
A. Cat foods. B. Plant seeds. C. Potato chips. D. Ocean creatures.
13. What can we infer about the herring gulls?
A They were caught in the wild. B. They preferred mussels to fish.
C. They were released in the end. D. They stole food from people.
14. What will Dr. Neeltje Boogert probably agree with?
A. Animals in urban areas mainly feed on food waste.
B. Seagulls rely on food waste to go through difficulty.
C. It is clear how animals’ experience affects their life.
D. More proof is needed to show seagulls’ food choice.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Seagulls’ Preference for Food B. New Living Habits of Seagulls
C. Seagulls’ Choices of Habitats D. Secrets of Seagulls’ Daily Diet

Anyone with a mobile phone has likely dropped it in water or been caught in a rainstorm. And many seem to think that putting a wet phone in a bag of uncooked rice will rescue it. ___16___. The technology company said it is a bad idea because small particles(颗粒) of rice can get into the phone and cause damage.
If the phone is dropped in water, dry it with a clean cloth, even a shirt will do. Turn the phone off if you can. Remove its SIM card, the cover and the battery, if possible. And let everything dry at room temperature, perhaps with a fan running. Since you cannot take a phone apart, Apple says to tap the phone against your hand with the connecting ports facing down so water can flow out. ___17___. Apple, however, advises against putting one inside iPhone openings.
If your phone is dropped in seawater, treated water, or a drink, Samsung advises to keep it in clean water for a few minutes. ___18___. Both Apple and Samsung say to leave the phone out in an open area to dry. More importantly, don’t use a hair dryer or put the phone in a freezer. Most newer phones are not waterproof but they are water-resistant. It means they can get wet for a short time.
___19___. Packs of silica gel (干燥剂) are usually included with products including food and shoes to keep them dry. These packs can help dry your phone in a sealed container. The phone manufacturers say it is hard to know when phones are completely dry. But it will likely take a few days. ___20___.

B. However, Apple recently warned against doing just that
C. Phones can survive 30 minutes in up to 6 meters of water
D. Doing that will remove any salt that could hurt the phone
E. Another way to dry your phone is by using a drying agent

“Wait, ma’ am. I’ll pay for them,” he said. He couldn’t be older than 12, and Mary noticed that he didn’t look particularly well-off.
“Oh, no. I couldn’t put you out like that,” Mary said.
“Sometimes, we have to do good things. That’s what my grandmother says all the time,” the boy said, paying for everything that Mary had picked out. Luckily, it was only a few essentials.
“Hey, I’m Mary Cummings. What’s your name?” she said conversationally.
“I’m Mark.”
“Thank you so much for what you did, Mark. It saved me a trip to the store. How about giving me your phone number so I can pay you back as soon as I get my wallet,” Mary suggested, and the kid wrote down his number on the receipt.
“Although I also believe in paying it forward like you and your grandma, we have to pay off our debts,” Mary said, and they said goodbye.
She got home and told her daughter, Anastacia, about the experience. “It was nice to see a young man being so kind,” Mary finished her story.
Mary called the kid to return the money the following day.
“Hello, Mrs. Cummings,” Mark said upon opening the front door. “I would invite you in, but I’m not supposed to have anyone over. My grandma would be mad.”
“Oh, where is she? Maybe, we can come later to meet her.” Anastacia added happily.
“She’s actually at the hospital and won’t get out for a while,” Mark explained with a frown (皱眉). Mary and Anastacia wanted to know more, so he continued. “She needs a huge surgery, and I started a GoFundMe, but it’s not that popular.”
“Oh, sweetie. You shouldn’t have to do that on your own,” Anastacia said, concerned.

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. A

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Participants paid attention to details such as fingers, teeth, and eyes as possible indicators when looking for AI-generated content - but their assessments weren’t always correct. Pocol noted that the nature of the study allowed participants to compare photos in detail, while most Internet users look at images in passing.(在寻找人工智能生成的内容时,参与者会注意手指、牙齿和眼睛等细节,作为可能的指标,但他们的评估并不总是正确的。Pocol指出,这项研究的本质是允许参与者详细地比较照片,而大多数互联网用户都是匆匆看照片)”可知,匆忙下结论降低了实验结果的准确性。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“That’s why we need to develop tools to identify and counter this.(这就是为什么我们需要开发工具来识别和应对这种情况)”可知,Pocol对处理虚假信息的建议是开发实用的工具来识别它。故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“If you recently had trouble figuring out if an image of a person is real or generated through artificial intelligence (AI), you’re not alone.
12 What do seagulls like best according to-UK researchers?
A. Cat foods. B. Plant seeds. C. Potato chips. D. Ocean creatures.
13. What can we infer about the herring gulls?
A. They were caught in the wild.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

“Oh, I must have forgotten my wallet at home. I’m so sorry. I’ll have to come back for these things later,” Mary said to the cashier, who started picking up the items and putting them back. Meanwhile, Mary prepared to walk away when the boy behind her in line spoke up.
“We don’t have anyone else. It’s only us,” Mark shrugged (耸肩).

【答案】One possible version:
Mary and Anastacia looked at each other and came to a wordless decision. “Give me the link to the GoFundMe, and your grandmother’s name. Also, come with us to the bakery. We’ll go visit her and see if the doctor lets her eat some pie,” Mary offered. After buying some pies, they went to the hospital to meet Mark’s grandmother. They talked to her for a while. When Mary and Anastacia got home, Anastacia shared the GoFundMe link with anyone she could think of , and she also donated a few hundred dollars. But Mary felt so hopeless. “They need so much money for this surgery. I don’t know if sharing the link is enough,” she breathed sadly.
Anastacia started writing everything that happened between Mary and Mark. She posted it on several online platforms. At first, there were only a few comments of people had read the story and donated to the cause after a few days. But surprisingly, a famous new outlet picked up the story, shared it, and even interviewed Mary and Mark for their article. The GoFundMe project reached way beyond their goal, and they were ecstatic. Mark couldn’t believe it. He had only paid around $ 20 for what Mrs. Cummings needed at the store, and she somehow found a way to pay it back and more.
