In 2020, there were 727 million people aged 65 or above, which is expected to more than double by 2050. The silver-haired population represent a massive opportunity for nearly every industry where companies can build a new market for their products and services while creating social value.
The main consumption patterns of elderly population can be classified into two categories: health-related consumption and daily consumption. When it comes to health consumption, seniors are not only concerned about healthcare but also increasingly emphasizes disease prevention. In relation to this, preventive health services, such as physical examinations, will have significant room for growth. Evidently, regular physical examinations require a certain amount of time, economic costs and medical support. Therefore, the high-income population in big cities can sustain them for a longer period of time due to their subjective willingness and objective conditions.
Another key section of the elderly market is represented by the application of medical devices and technology tailored for seniors. One notable area of development is the adoption of remote monitoring systems. These systems make use of cutting-edge technology to enable healthcare professionals to remotely monitor the vital signs and health status of elderly individuals, providing real-time feedback and intervention when necessary. This not only ensures immediate medical attention but also allows older adults to maintain their independence and age comfortably in their own homes.
Acknowledging the importance of social engagement and mental stimulation in enhancing the well-being of seniors, the entertainment industry has emerged as a key component as well. It is centered around offering diverse activities and entertainment options, such as organized tours, social clubs, arts and crafts workshops and music and dance performances, which are meant for the unique preferences and needs of older individuals. They offer a platform for them to connect, share experiences and engage, creating a supportive environment where seniors can enrich life experiences and apply their different talents.
The aging population is one of the most important trends in the world, and it’s indeed a powerful force not just socially but economically.

New technologies tend to cause a cycle of concern, disorder, and conflict before eventually being accepted. Recent writings about artificial intelligence (AI) and other advances in computer science suggest that we are preparing to welcome the final stage of this latest round of invention.
The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). “Absent from discussions about AI and automation,” Pugh argues, “is the impact that these systems might have on the emotional understandings we build of ourselves and others.”
Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. She then provides a summary of how care work is being increasingly automated, showing how quantification and measurement have taken over many aspects of human-facing jobs, leaving little room for doctors, teachers, and others to build connection.
“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame, a risk that makes it all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic (同理心的) reflection,” writes Pugh. In chapter 8, she explains how such interactions can be done right. Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design”, or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors.
Pugh concludes by arguing that we need a social movement for connection. “We need to fight for what we might call our ‘social health’,” she maintains.
12. What is the main concern of Allison Pugh’s new book?
A. The impact of AI on future employment. B. The approach to living and working with AI.
C. The increasing role of technology in caregiving. D. The value of connective labor in the age of automation.
13. Why does the author mention “practitioners” in paragraph 3?
A. To explain how to do care work. B. To argue against the automation technology.
C. To prove the significance of human connection. D. To discuss the challenges of privacy in caregiving.
14. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The encounter. B. The shame. C. The risk. D. The potential.
15. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The overview of chapter 8. B. The effective way to interact.
C. The new trend of caregiving. D. The factors of avoiding shame.
D 13. C 14. A 15. B

根据第二段中“The Last Human Job, sociologist Allison Pugh’s new book centered on caregiving and human connection in the age of automation, warns readers against unreserved acceptance of these technological advances, citing “connective labor” as valuable human work that will not be easily replaced by algorithms (算法). (社会学家Allison Pugh的新书《最后的人类工作》聚焦于自动化时代的看护和人际关系,该书警告读者不要毫无保留地接受这些技术进步,称“连接性劳动”是有价值的人类工作,不会轻易被算法取代)”可知,这本新书主要关注的是自动化时代连接性劳动的价值。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Pugh sets the stage by arguing for the value of human connection and the importance of both seeing and being seen by others. “Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless,” she observes. (Pugh通过论证人际关系的价值以及看到和被他人看到的重要性奠定了基础。她说:“从业者说,他们获得了一种目的感,仅仅是因为有机会观察人们最无助的时候。”)”可知,此处先指出Pugh论证了人际关系的价值,以及看到和被他人看到的重要性,然后提到从业者的想法,他们通过看到他人而获得目的感。由此推知,作者提到从业者是为了证明人际关系的重要性。故选C项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词的上文“When one goes to a doctor or a teacher, the encounter is full of the potential for shame (当一个人去看医生或老师时,这种相遇充满了羞耻的可能性)”和下文“all the more powerful when practitioners show empathic (同理心的) reflection (当从业者表现出共情反思时,这一切都更加强大)”可推知,正是与他人的相遇有可能会有羞耻感,所以从业者具备的共情反思才会使遭遇变得强大,划线词指代的是前面提到的相遇。故选A项。
根据第四段中“Research conducted by herself and others identifies three key aspects supporting connective labor: “relational design”, or how people are set up to interact with one another; “connective culture,” or shared practices and beliefs that influence how people interact; and “resource distribution,” which includes time given for interaction, worker-to-client rates, and the extent of technology and data use, among other factors. (她和其他人进行的研究确定了支持连接性劳动的三个关键方面:“关系设计”,即人们如何与他人互动;“连接性的文化”,或影响人们互动方式的共同实践和信仰;“资源分配”包括互动时间、员工对客户的比率、技术和数据使用的程度等因素)”可知,本段主要介绍了连接性劳动中有效的互动方式。故选B项。

In Chinese traditional architecture, a skywell is an open courtyard or well-like space usually located at the heart of a building or group of buildings.____16____ Their designs often feature the classic Chinese dou gong overhangs to provide shade and collect water into a central basin.
Chinese skywells are so effective in cooling homes because they can control natural airing. Cool air is drawn into the building from the lower levels, and warm air escapes and rises through the upper levels. ____17____
The skywell’s layout and construction materials also help in thermal(热量的)regulation. During the day, the courtyard absorbs heat from the sun, acting as a thermal mass.____18____This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and consistent temperature indoors.
Most traditional skywells include water features, such as fountains or ponds. A recent study has shown that the most significant part of a skywell’s cooling effect comes from these water bodies.____19____As water evaporates(蒸发)from these features, it absorbs heat from the surrounding air. This reduces the temperature within the courtyard and surrounding rooms.
____20____One fitting example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology Research Centre in Jinan,an 18-story building that has a giant open space at its heart from the fifth floor to the top floor. The toilets, elevators, and meeting rooms surround this space. This enhances natural airing and natural energy consumption, according to the Shanghai-based CCDI Group.
A. This promotes fresh air flow, especially during hot summer days.
B. It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.
C. This cooling was disadvantageous in regions with hot and dry climates.
D. It’s probably why temperatures around them are 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower.
E. These wonders continue to inspire architects to seek sustainable solutions.
F. The magic of skywells stands as witnesses to the wisdom of ancient builders.
G. The stored heat is gradually released as the outdoor temperature drops at night.

根据上文“In Chinese traditional architecture, a skywell is an open courtyard or well-like space usually located at the heart of a building or group of buildings.(在中国传统建筑中,天井是一个开放庭院或井状空间,通常位于建筑物或建筑群的中心。)” It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.(它通常是一个被建筑的房间和侧翼包围的正方形状。)
根据上文“Cool air is drawn into the building from the lower levels, and warm air escapes and rises through the upper levels.(冷空气从较低的楼层被吸入建筑,暖空气从较高的楼层排出并上升。)” 而A项“This promotes fresh air flow, especially during hot summer days.”(这促进了新鲜空气的流动,尤其是在炎热的夏天。) 故选A项。
根据上文“During the day, the courtyard absorbs heat from the sun, acting as a thermal mass.(白天,庭院吸收太阳的热量,充当热质。)”和下文“This day-night cycle helps maintain a balanced and consistent temperature indoors.(这种昼夜循环有助于保持室内平衡一致的温度。)” 因此G项“ The stored heat is gradually released as the outdoor temperature drops at night.(夜间室外温度下降,储存的热量逐渐释放。) ”符合语境,有承上启下作用。故选G项。
【19题详解】
根据上文“A recent study has shown that the most significant part of a skywell’s cooling effect comes from these water bodies.(最近的一项研究表明,天井冷却效果的最重要部分来自这些水体。)” 而D项“It’s probably why temperatures around them are 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower.(这可能是它们周围的温度低2.6℃到4.2℃的原因。) ”符合语境。其中 2.6℃ to 4.2℃ lower与上文cooling effect对应,有承上作用。故选D项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
John was a highway patrol trooper (巡逻警察) responsible for ensuring traffic safety on T Highway. One afternoon in July, there was a heavy rainstorm. While driving through the busiest part of the highway during the downpour, he noticed that traffic was beginning to slow down ahead of him, with some cars coming to a stop and veering (转向) into another lane.
John initially thought there had been a car accident, so he reduced his speed to take a closer look. However, he quickly discovered that the real cause of the hold-up was an animal wandering on the wet road. As he got nearer, he realized it was a dog. There was a large dog that looked like a brown German shepherd (牧羊犬) in the middle lane.
The weather conditions were terrible, with a gray sky and heavy rain reducing visibility on the highway. This delay could lead to a traffic jam, and it was certainly very dangerous to have the dog wandering in the middle of the road.
He immediately turned on his blue lights because people usually slow down when they see the blue lights and called into the radio so they knew where he was. He pulled over, got out, and whistled to draw the dog’s attention.
It seemed as if the dog knew John was its lifesaver. It walked to John and his car. Once the dog was in the car, John pulled into a parking lot nearby, where he called Petworks Animal Service. While waiting, he noticed the dog wearing a collar with its name “Marley”. John recorded a short video of the dog.
Then an animal control officer came and took Marley to the shelter. John came back to work. Watching cars travelling on the highway through the window glass, he thought he might do something to let the dog’s owner know the pet was found safe.
After work, John posted the video online with a brief description attached.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Days later, news came that Marley’s owner had been found and would visit him.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After work, John posted the video online with a brief description attached. He called on netizens to lend a helping hand. Amazingly, the video went viral in no time. Countless people gave likes to the video, leaving heartwarming comments. They not only admired John for his selfless good deeds but also actively shared the video on various platforms to help look for Marley’s owner. Watching such a large number of helpful people getting enthusiastically involved, John was deeply touched. His heart was filled with hope and anticipation, waiting for the good news that Marley would be reunited with its owner soon.
Days later, news came that Marley’s owner had been found and would visit him. Hearing that, John felt excitement sweeping over him. Soon, there came a knock on the door. The moment he opened the door, a lady came into view. She reached out, grasped John’s hands and expressed her sincere gratitude. John responded with a warm smile and knelt down to pet Marley, who was wagging his tail excitedly. Before leaving, she insisted on giving John a gift. He politely refused, saying Marley’s safety and happiness was what he hoped for. As a highway patrol trooper, John went above and beyond the call of duty by helping a lost dog.

“Practitioners (从业者) said they gained a sense of purpose simply from the opportunity of observing people at their most defenseless” she observes.

B It is often a square surrounded by the building’s rooms and wings.

Days later, news came that Marley’s owner had been found and would visit him.
