Best outdoor theatres to enjoy this summer
With the seasons changing, now is the wonderful time to start planning summer experiences at outdoor theatres in parks, city squares, woodlands and even the side of a cliff!

Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre; seeing anything at all, back dropped by the blue Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. If you want a show particularly fitting for this unique surroundings, check out The Pirates of Penzance playing in July.
Willow Globe Theatre, Powys

Back in the 1990s, Henry Rotich who is from Kenya, did not know much about China, with his best connection to the country being a teakettle made in Shanghai that was owned by his grandmother.
Nevertheless, he applied to study in China when an opportunity presented itself in 1998. Luckily, he got the chance to come to China to pursue his master’s degree in chemistry at the same year. And his main challenge at that time was learning the language. However, he could communicate with people easily by simple Chinese after a month.
“During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came to learn their language fast.”
“Learning language and culture depends on one’s mindset as well as the opportunity to live in an environment where the language is used daily,” Rotich said. He believes that China’s scholarship program for African students to study in China has been instrumental in helping young Africans learn Chinese and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture.
To complete his chemistry studies, Rotich spent eight years in China. Asked about the benefits of studying in the country, Rotich, who is married to a Chinese woman, quipped (打趣) that he came back to Kenya with “three degrees” in the same period it would take others to get just two degrees. “The first degree is my wife, the second one is my master’s and finally, my PhD,” he said proudly.
Rotich said different countries and people should concentrate on their cultural similarities. He has noted many similarities between the Chinese and Kenyan cultures, and this has helped him appreciate the Chinese way of life. The similarities include respect for the elderly, families gathering during special festivals, and good neighborliness.
As chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association for Kenyan students who studied in China, Rotich praised the role played by Chinese scholarships in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries.
24. Why did Henry Rotich learn Chinese so fast at the beginning?
A. He married a Chinese girl. B. He got lots of help from Chinese people.
C. He was more intelligent than other students. D. He devoted all his spare time to studying
25. What can we know about Henry Rotich from the passage?
A. He came to China to study Chinese. B. He bought a teakettle made in Shanghai.
C. He got three degrees when studying in China. D. He has a good knowledge of Chinese culture.
26. What does Rotich think of China’s scholarship program?
A. It contributes to the cultural communication. B. It increases the cultural similarities.
C. It promotes Kenya’s economic growth. D. It helps young Kenyans get higher degrees.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Challenges Henry Rotich met in China
B. Cultural cooperation between China and Kenya
C. Henry Rotich’s studying in China — a wise choice
D. Henry Rotich’s working experience in China — a magic story
C
Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists.
Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world? A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence.
Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.
Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity.
28. What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1?
A. They are difficult to research.
B. They fail to get due attention.
C. They are too small to support wildlife.
D. They have greater importance than rivers.
29. What does the cognitive bias assume?
A. Ponds are short-lived. B. Rivers are fully-developed.
C Small things are unimportant. D. Natural habitats are unnoticed.
30. Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To solve a problem. B. To present a fact.
C. To prove a point. D. To make a comparison.
31. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Exploring ponds has a long way to go. B. Ecological diversity is easy to realize.
C. Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D. Building ponds can promote economy.
D
If you’ve ever been pleasant to a rude customer while waiting tables, or smilingly received a truly ugly sweater as a gift, you’ve participated in a display rule. This is hiding a negative emotion usually to promote harmony between two individuals. However, they can have negative consequences for the person suppressing a negative emotion or opinion.
As daily interactions become increasingly virtual, display rules are changing. A group of researchers from the University of Tokyo in Japan set out to answer the questions of how emojis are used to reflect emotions in different contexts, if the same display rules apply to emojis, and how they affect a person’s well being.
The study observed 1,289 participants who use Simeji, the most-downloaded emoji keyboard in Japan, and how the emojis were used to either express an emotion or mask it. The participants answered questions about their subjective well being, and rated how often they use emojis. They were also given messages with different social contexts and asked to respond to them as they would normally, and then rated the intensity of the expression of their emotions.
The study found that texters chose to express more emotions via emoji with people in a private context or with a close friend. The respondents expressed the least amount of emotion with higher-status individuals. The most intense expressions of emotion came with matching emojis, unless the respondents felt the need to mask their true feelings, such as using a smiling emoji to mask sadness. Only when negative feelings were very strongly felt did the respondents use a negative emoji. Additionally, using emojis to express emotions was associated with higher subjective well being compared to masking emotions.
The researchers would like to expand this study with a larger and more varied sample, including more males since the Simeji keyboard is more popular among young women and from different cultural backgrounds.
“First, the highly gender-imbalanced sample may have led to stronger results. Future research should explore potential gender differences in emoji display rules,” said a researcher. “Second, Japanese culture’s emphasis on interpersonal harmony and concealment (隐瞒) of negative emotions may have influenced the results.”
32. Why do people apply display rules?
A. To keep the peace. B. To make more friends.
C. To avoid being hurt. D. To create a good impression.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The research findings. B. The research process.
C. The research subjects. D. The research purpose.
34. What did the study find about the participants’ use of emojis?
A. It was influenced by different contexts. B. It promoted interpersonal relationships.
C. It improved their subjective well being. D. It was a way of masking their true feelings.
35. Why do the researchers want to expand the study?
A To make it known to more people. B. To achieve more convincing results.
C. To benefit people from different cultures. D. To explore gender differences in emoji use.

A lesson from my sister
My elder sister was different. She was socially awkward. She could not look at people in the eye. She would mumble (嘟哝) to herself and repeat the words she had just said. The child psychologist had termed it as “Asperger Syndrome”.
She, however, was academically capable. Therefore, we attended the same primary school. Despite this, I never, ever admitted in public that she was my sister. There was one incident, however, that changed how I viewed my sister. It was the incident that changed me.
Being in primary six, about to graduate, the school had made it a must for everyone to perform. Due to my sister’s inability to work together with others, she had to do it individually.
“I’ll sing,” my sister told my parents confidently. Hearing that, I was completely shocked. How could my sister, who was socially awkward, sing in front of the school? I knew so well that if this happened, she would surely embarrass me.
Silently I prayed I would not have to watch my sister disgrace herself. It is fine. No one knows she is your sister. I remember telling myself these exact lines as I sat in the hall waiting for the performances to start.
The lights dimmed and the curtains parted to reveal the only solo — my sister. It took about a whole minute for her to speak out her name and class and by that time, whispers were heard in the audience. “Why is she taking so long?” People around me asked. I sat nervously in my seat, wishing I were somewhere else.

C. Small things are unimportant.

A. To make it known to more people. B. To achieve more convincing results.
C. To benefit people from different cultures. D. To explore gender differences in emoji use.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I remember telling myself these exact lines as I sat in the hall, waiting for the performances to start.

1. 所续写短文的总词数应为120左右;

Paragraph 2
Guilt (内疚) and shame filled my heart as I listened to my sister’s wonderful singing.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
Finally my sister started to sing. I was prepared for the worst. She opened her mouth, and I was shocked — she sang effortlessly and melodiously. Her voice rang naturally through the hall, beautiful in its power. I listened ever so carefully to the lyrics that she had composed all by herself and wondered — how did I not know that my sister could sing like an angel?
Paragraph 2
Guilt (内疚) and shame filled my heart as I listened to my sister’s wonderful singing. I realized that I had been so wrong. She was socially awkward yet so gifted. How could I have doubted my sister’s abilities? She taught me a lesson that I should not judge a person from just one perspective. Although she knew that I was embarrassed by her and was unwilling to attend her concert, she had never taken it to heart. It was then that I was determined to love her unconditionally and tell everybody that she was my sister.
