Yo u shouldn't leave today." But Wu Song did not believe it, and then he came to the hill and really met a big tiger. Wu Song was not afraid at all. One day, after worshiping his ancestors, the host gave his retainers a pot of wine. One of the retainers said, "It's not enough for all of us to drink. I suggest that we draw a snake on the ground. The one who first finishes the drawing will win the pot of wine." All the others agreed. One man, eager to win, quickly sketched out his snake. When he was about to claim his prize, he noticed that the others were still busy with their drawings. Filled with pride, he thought, "How could my masterpiece be completed without feet?" Then he began adding feet to the snake. As he was busy drawing, another man also completed his snake. He swiftly grabbed the pot of wine and said, "Snakes have no feet. How can you add feet to it?" Then he drank the wine. Seeing this, the first man was filled with regret. This is today’s idiom story. It tells us not to overdo things, or we might ruin the whole work. His ancestors had come to America from Ireland. masterpiece /ˈmɑːstə(r)/n. Her work is a masterpiece of (= an excellent example of) simplicity. swiftly/swɪftli/adv. She moved swiftly to the rescue. Yugong Moves the Mountains Long ago, there were two high mountains, Taihang Mountain and Wangwu Mountain. The two high mountains blocked a village, and the villagers never went out for thousands of years. There was an old man named Yu Gong, which means “Foolish Old Man” in English. He was more than 90 years old. One day, he gathered his family together and said, “Those two mountains are a big trouble. Let’s move them away.” His wife said, “How could we possibly get rid of the two massive mountains? And what about all the dirt and stones?” “Don’t worry, we can transport the debris to the seaside.” said Yu Gong. The next day, they began the tough task of breaking rocks and digging earth. The dirt and stones were transported in baskets  to the distant Bohai Sea. Day and night, Yugong and his family kept working without any complaint. Another old man named Zhisou, which means “Clever Old Man” in English, laughed at Yugong and said, “You are so old and feeble. How could you possibly remove even a corner of these mountains?” Yugong said, “I’m old,but I have sons. If my sons are old, I have my grandsons. Generation after generation, we will surely level the mountains.”  Finally, the Emperor in the heaven heard about this. He was deeply moved by the spirit of Yu Gong. So he sent his two sons to help. At last, the two mountains were removed. This is today’s idiom story. It tells us that, as long as we have the determination, we will find a way to solve the problem. An ugly new building blocked the view from the window. Clear away leaves and other garden debris from the pond. feeble /ˈˈfiːbl/ 虚弱的;衰弱的 a feeble old man衰弱的老人 be deeply moved by... We were deeply moved by her plight. Be There Just to Make Up the Number During the warring states, King Xuan of Qi loved to listen to the yu, an ancient Chinese musical instrument. He employed more than 300 yu players to perform at his court every day. The king enjoyed listening to them playing together. The players were all well-paid for the performance. Mr. Nanguo knew little about the instrument, but he envied theyu players and wished to get the same treatment. So, he went to the court and told the king that he was an excellent yu player, and wanted to join the group. The king was very happy that he got another master player. From then on, Mr. Nanguo imitated the finger movements of the other players and pretended to be playing very enthusiastically. The king appreciated Nanguo's ‘performance’ very much and never found out that he was a liar. Later the king died and he was succeeded by his son, who turned out to be another admirer of theyu. But the new king would like the players to perform for him one by one. Hearing this, Nanguo sneaked out of the court at once and never came back. This is today’s idiom story.  If someone pretends to have some abilities he does not really have, we could say that he is  there just to make up the number. Most pupils learn (to play) a musical instrument. master /ˈmɑːstə(r)/adj. 技术精湛的 the skills of a master craftsman工艺大师的技艺 appreciate v. His talents are not fully appreciated in that company.
