In his brief speech, he praised students for their hard work, and, drawing from his own early experiences, encouraged them not to let failure defeat them. Later, just as the headmaster was about to start awarding degrees to graduates, Hale gently pushed him aside, saying he wanted to celebrate the graduates by giving them $1,000 each. Students appeared from under their umbrellas, erupting in loud cheers and applause (掌声). It went on for nearly a minute before Hale could cut back in. “Listen, there’s a rule,” he said. “The first $500 is our gift to you. The second $500 is for you to do charity, giving to somebody else in need or another organization who could use it more than you.” As he spoke, two big bags were carried onstage. They were filled with 3,000 envelopes, which he said were decorated by students at two local elementary schools, and marked either “gift” or “give”. It was time for students to walk across the stage. One at a time, wearing, raincoats and big smiles, they accepted their diplomas (文凭) and their pair of envelopes. “These are kids who are working their tails off to be there,” he recalled. “They could certainly use the gift.” The 57-year-old man put much of his wealth — over$ 270 million — toward charitable causes, including cancer research and educational institutions. “Some of the most joyous times have been when I’ve had the chance to share,” Hale explained. “If there’s a way that I could create that seed within another generation where they would get to experience the joy of giving, then maybe that becomes something that they would make an effort to do and be accustomed to doing and make us all a little bit better along the way.” He has learned that one of this year’s graduates gave her money to a local charity that provides holiday gifts for poor children. She herself had been a receiver years ago. 4. How did the students feel upon hearing what Hale said in Paragraph 1? A. Calm. B. Overjoyed. C. Embarrassed. D. Curious. 5. How could the students deal with the money marked “give” according to the rule? A. Use it to travel with friends. B. Spend it on learning materials. C. Pay it for gifts for their teachers. D. Donate it for meaningful purposes. 6. What did Hale mean when mentioning students could use the gift? A. They had good luck to be there. B. They needn’t work hard any more. C. They were good enough for the gift. D. They were too young to use the gift. 7. What is the significance of Hale’s practice? A. Paying kindness forward. B. Promoting teaching effectiveness. C. Driving the world forward significantly. D. Strengthening interpersonal connections. B 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Students appeared from under their umbrellas, erupting in loud cheers and applause(掌声). It went on for nearly a minute before Hale could cut back in.(学生们从伞下出现,爆发出巨大的欢呼声和掌声。这持续了将近一分钟,Hale才切入。)”可推知,学生们听到Hale的话欣喜若狂。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的“The second $ 500 is for you to do charity, giving it to somebody else in need or another organization who could use it more than you.(第二笔500美元是给你做慈善的,捐给其他有需要的人或另一个比你更能使用它的组织)和“They were filled with 3,000 envelopes, which he said were decorated by students at two local elementary schools, and marked either ‘gift’ or ‘give.’(里边有3000个信封,他说这些信封由两所当地的小学生装饰,标有“gift”和“give”)”可知,学生可以将标有“give”的钱为了有意义的目的而捐赠。故答案为D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“‘These are kids who are working their tails off to be there,’ he recalled. ‘They could certainly use the gift.’(‘这些都是努力奋斗站在这里的孩子’他回忆说。‘他们当然可以使用这笔礼物’)可推知,Hale想说明学生们足够好配得上这笔礼物。故答案为C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“If there’s a way that I could create that seed within another generation where they would get to experience the joy of giving, then maybe that becomes something that they would make an effort to do and be accustomed to doing and make us all a little bit better along the way.(如果我可以创造一种方式在另一代人心里播种种子,使他们体验给予的快乐,那么也许那会变成某种他们会尽力去做并且习惯去做的事情,而且让我们在前进的道路上变得更好)”和“He has learned that one of this year’s graduates gave her money to a local charity that provides holiday gifts to poor children. She herself had been a receiver years ago.(他了解到今年的一位毕业生将她的钱捐给当地慈善,为孩子们提供假期礼物。她自己几年前就当过接收者)”可推知,Hale做法的意义在于将善举继续传递。故答案为A。 C If the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. However, there are places in the rocks of the earth’s crust where it isn’t strongly held together — where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake! The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Seven hundred people died and property (财产) damage amounted to about $425,000,000. The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake. One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed. Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people. 8. The underlined word “vibration” in the first paragraph probably means “________”. A. shaking B. force C. energy D. losing 9. Which of the following is the correct order of the years when the earthquakes happened? ①the San Francisco Earthquake ②the earthquake in Lisbon Portugal ③the earthquake in Calabria and Sicily ④the earthquake in central Italy ⑤the earthquake in Gansu Province ⑥the Tokyo quake A. ③④⑤⑥②① B. ⑤⑥②①③④ C. ②①③④⑤⑥ D. ①③④②⑤⑥ 10. According to the passage, the earthquake that killed the most people happened in ________. A. Portugal B. Italy C. Japan D. China 11. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places B. the fires following the San Francisco Earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did C. there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了地震是怎么发生的,以及国内外发生的地震。 【8题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段“However, there are places in the rocks of the earth’s crust where it isn’t strongly held together — where faults exist. Along the faults, one rock might push against another with great force. The energy is changed to vibration in the rocks, so they begin to shake and we have an earthquake!(然而,地壳岩石中有一些地方没有牢固地结合在一起——那里存在断层。沿着断层,一块岩石可能会用力推压另一块岩石。能量在岩石中转化为vibration,所以它们开始摇晃,我们发生了地震!)”可知,岩石推压另一块岩石,产生的能量会转化为震动,所以岩石开始摇晃,推测划线单词表示“震动,颤抖”,与shaking意义相近。故选A。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“The most famous one in North America was the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.(北美最著名的地震是1906年旧金山大地震)”、“One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755.(1755年,葡萄牙里斯本发生了欧洲最著名的地震之一)”、“In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.(1908年,在卡拉布里亚和西西里岛,一场地震造成约7.5万人死亡。1915年,在意大利中部,数百个城镇和村庄遭到破坏,3万人死亡)”以及第三段“Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. The Tokyo quake of 1923 killed more than one hundred thousand people and destroyed the city and the city of Yokohama, too. The Chinese quake in 1920 covered more than three hundred square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.(日本东京和中国甘肃省发生了两次在亚洲造成巨大破坏的大地震。 根据第二段“One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed. In 1908, in Calabria and Sicily, a quake killed about seventy-five thousand people. In 1915, in central Italy, hundreds of towns and villages were damaged and thirty thousand people were killed.(1755年,葡萄牙里斯本发生了欧洲最著名的地震之一。这座城市被摧毁,至少有三万人死亡。1908年,在卡拉布里亚和西西里岛,一场地震造成约7.5万人死亡。1915年,在意大利中部,数百个城镇和村庄遭到破坏,3万人死亡)”以及第三段“Two great earthquakes that caused great damage in Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan, and in Gansu Province in China. Seven hundred people died and property (财产) damage amounted to about $425,000,000. The greatest destruction came from the fires that followed the quake.(北美最著名的地震是1906年旧金山大地震。700人死亡,财产损失约4.25亿美元。地震后的大火造成了最大的破坏)”可知,旧金山地震后的大火造成的损失比地震造成的损失更大。故选B。 D Brown mud is found on coastlines around the UK. It might not look very exciting but in fact it supports wildlife that does a very important job. Scientists in Scotland have just begun a study of coastal mud. They are sifting (筛选) through it to find the creatures living there, which could provide a natural solution to climate change. Some of the mud-burrowing (泥土穴居) creatures feed on tiny organisms such as algae and plankton. These organisms absorb carbon. If algae and plankton are left in the sea they eventually die, rot (腐烂) and give out carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Instead, many are pulled down into the sea bed by mud-burrowing creatures, where the carbon they contain is stored, for hundreds of years. Dr Ceri Lewis is leading a team of scientists who are measuring which creatures are best at storing carbon in the sea be d off the west coast of Scotland. “There are some fantastic, wonderful animals living in ocean mud, all doing these important jobs,” Lewis told The Times newspaper. In the area, there are at least 200 species of invertebrates (animals without backbones). The scientists’ work includes scooping up mud from the sea bed, sifting it to find the invertebrates, and measuring how much carbon each one stores. Lewis’s study is part of a huge five-year project called the Convex Seascape Survey. It is measuring how much carbon is stored in coastal areas all around the world, and how much more could be stored in the future. Lewis admits that mud isn’t the first thing people think of when looking for solutions to climate change, but, she says, “It couldn’t be a more important time to work out how we can best use nature’s power to lock carbon away.” 12. What can be learned about the mud-burrowing creatures? A. They can absorb carbon. B. They give out carbon in the sea. C. They help to lock carbon away. D. They contribute to global warming. 13. What does the underlined phrase “scooping up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Spooning up. B. Making up. C. Looking up. D. Cleaning up. 14. Why does Lewis want to measure carbon in his study? A. To store much more carbon. B. To study the secrets of the sea. C. To sort out the creatures in the sea. D. To seek a natural solution to climate change. 15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Greater importance should be attached to coastal mud. B. Climate change depends on the amount of carbon. C. Human beings should use natural power to break down carbon. D. The most important time to measure costal mud is in the five years. 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了科学家在苏格兰开展了一项关于沿海泥土的研究,旨在寻找自然解决气候变化的方法。研究发现,泥土中的穴居生物能够吸收并储存碳,这有助于减少温室气体排放,对抗全球变暖。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Some of the mud-burrowing (泥土穴居) creatures feed on tiny organisms such as algae and plankton. These organisms absorb carbon. If algae and plankton are left in the sea they eventually die, rot (腐烂) and give out carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas into the atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Instead, many are pulled down into the sea bed by mud-burrowing creatures, where the carbon they contain is stored, for hundreds of years.(一些泥土穴居生物以微小的生物为食,如藻类和浮游生物。 根据上文“Dr Ceri Lewis is leading a team of scientists who are measuring which creatures are best at storing carbon in the sea be d off the west coast of Scotland.(Ceri Lewis博士带领一组科学家在苏格兰西海岸附近的海域测量哪些生物最擅长储存碳。)”可知,此处指科学家的工作包括从海底舀起泥巴,筛选出来以找到无脊椎动物,并测量每个无脊椎动物储存的碳量。因此,“scooping up”应该是指用勺子等工具舀起泥巴,所以答案为A,即“Spooning up”(舀起)。故选A。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Lewis’s study is part of a huge five-year project called the Convex Seascape Survey. It is measuring how much carbon is stored in coastal areas all around the world, and how much more could be stored in the future. Lewis admits that mud isn’t the first thing people think of when looking for solutions to climate change, but, she says, “It couldn’t be a more important time to work out how we can best use nature’s power to lock carbon away.”(路易斯的研究是一个名为“凸面海景调查”(Convex Seascape Survey)的五年大型项目的一部分。 根据文章最后一段“Lewis admits that mud isn’t the first thing people think of when looking for solutions to climate change, but, she says, “It couldn’t be a more important time to work out how we can best use nature’s power to lock carbon away.”(路易斯承认,在寻找应对气候变化的解决方案时,泥土并不是人们首先想到的东西,但她说,“现在正是我们找出如何最好地利用自然的力量来封存碳的关键时刻。”)”可知,泥土不是人们首先考虑解决气候变化问题的方案,但现在是更好地利用自然的力量来封存碳的关键时刻。因此,可以推断出,我们应该更加重视沿海地区的泥土,因为它们对碳的封存和减少气候变化的影响非常重要。故选A。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Are you guilty (内疚) of bad computer habits? Never give up!” chanted (吟诵) my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mia. They had just left the beach, where they had spent the day building sand castles and splashing in the waves. Now, Mia was leading Max and Charley on another adventure: They were seeking the ice-cream truck, which was always difficult to find. Over the years, Mia had become our family’s symbol of positivity. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. When my dad died, Mia was only forty years old and was left to raise me and my ten-year-old brother alone. She experienced a deeply sad event that could easily make anyone feel significantly less happy. She had been the one who had to make the decision to remove our dad from life support fourteen days after he died in a car accident. My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the steep (陡峭的), rocky road of a mountaintop in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking landscape, or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mom taught us just how much one could achieve with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren. Before starting her adventure with Max and Charley on that hot July afternoon, Mia heard the familiar clang (叮当声) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes (沙丘). But you need to be fast because he doesn’t stay for very long after you hear his bell. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver(动摇). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day. Mia’s eyes sparkled and she said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could find it at its next stop. They walked block after block. Not knowing which direct ion the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. The kids’ tiny legs were tired, but they carried on regardless, continuing to chant, “Never give up!” After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver (动摇).He wondered out loud, “Maybe we should give up. We have been walking pretty far and haven’t seen the truck yet.” Then he collapsed, resting his aching legs. Mia bent over and patted him gently on the shoulder. Wearing an encouraging smile, Mia comforted, “Never give up!” with Charley nodding in agreement. Max looked up, thought for a while and jumped to his feet. Just two blocks later, they found it. The kids screamed with excitement, “Never give up!” Simple though it is, that phrase has become our battle cry for the challenges we face. 词汇激活 行为类 ①神采飞扬,闪耀:sparkled/shined/flash ②解释:explained/demonstrate ③继续:carried on/keep on/continue 情绪类 ①疲劳的:tired/exhausted ②兴奋地尖叫起来:screamed with excitement/squeaked excitedly 【点睛】【高分句型1】Not knowing which direct ion the truck had taken, they had to make their best guess about where to search. B Hale, president of Granite Telecommunications, was onstage during Thursday’s rainy graduation ceremony to accept the medal for his support for the university. D. Curious. 5. C If the crust (外壳) of the earth were not pretty solid (坚固的), it would be shaking about and moving up and down frequently. ①the San Francisco Earthquake ②the earthquake in Lisbon, Portugal ③the earthquake in Calabria and Sicily ④the earthquake in central Italy ⑤the earthquake in Gansu Province ⑥the Tokyo quake A. ③④⑤⑥②① B. ⑤⑥②①③④ C. ②①③④⑤⑥ D. ①③④②⑤⑥ 10. According to the passage, the earthquake that killed the most people happened in ________. A Portugal B. Italy C. Japan D. China 11. We can infer from the passage that ________. A. the earth’s crust in Europe is weaker than that in other places B. the fires following the San Francisco Earthquake caused more damage than the earthquake did C. there were 75,000 people killed in the San Francisco earthquake D. the city of Yokohama was not greatly influenced by the Tokyo quake D Brown mud is found on coastlines around the UK. A To store much more carbon. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Are you guilty (内疚) of bad computer habits? Never give up!” chanted (吟诵) my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mia. They had just left the beach, where they had spent the day building sand castles and splashing in the waves. Now, Mia was leading Max and Charley on another adventure: They were seeking the ice-cream truck, which was always difficult to find. Over the years Mia had become our family’s symbol of positivity. Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch the truck in time that day. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After about twenty minutes of walking, Max’s faith in the mission began to waver(动摇). _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1-20BACBCABACBBCBACABCBA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
