If you have, you are not alone. The Continents and Oceans A Brave Guess In the late 1800s, a scientist named Alfred Wegener was interested in studying the map. He came up with a brave guess. He thought that all the continents once formed one huge land. A single large ocean was around this super-continent. Floating “ Ships” Why do the continents look this way? Scientists believe that natural forces under the earth make the continents move and form the lands and oceans this way. Over many, many centuries, slowly, the super-continent broke into two continents. One of them began to move to the north. Then it broke again, forming North America, Europe, and Asia. The gap between North America and Europe became part of the Atlantic Ocean. The second continent also broke apart to form South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. The continents were like floating ships at sea, moving to where they are nowadays. Finding Evidence It sounds unbelievable, but scientists have found evidence to support the guess. Firstly, it is the fossils. Ancient plants and animals of the same type were discovered both in South America and in Africa. Did they develop at the same time in two faraway places? It seems unlikely. Biologists believe that there must have been land bridges or other land connections that are unseen now. The coastlines of the continents also seem to fit together. The east coast of South America can fit into the lower west coast of Africa. The east coast of North America matches parts of Africa and Europe’s coasts. It seems as if they fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle(拼图). Mountain rocks help explain the truth, too. Scientists has recognized a mountain chain that is more than four hundred million years old. It runs down the eastern part of Greenland and western Norway. Then it goes through north-west Scotland and Ireland before it reaches western Canada. Finally, it finds its way to north-west Africa. 33 We can learn from the passage that Alfred Wegener ________ A. was a scientist who enjoyed painting maps. B. carried out a lot of experiments for his research. C. thought that all the continents were formed by a large ocean. D. believed that there was only one piece of land in the world long ago. 34. Why does the author compare the continents to floating ships in Paragraph 5? A. To show that the continents have different shapes. B. To show that the continents need energies to move. C. To show that oceans take up the greatest part of the world. D. To show that the continents can move in different directions. 35. Which of the following is NOT the evidence? A. Fossils of plants and animals. B. Land bridges. C. Coastlines of the continents. D. A mountain chain. 36. Where is this article likely to be found? A. A novel. B. An advertisement. C. A travel guide. D. A scientific magazine. 【答案】33. D 34. D 35. B 36. D 【解析】 【导语】本文主要介绍了世界地图的由来以及论证它是正确的方法。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据“He thought that all the continents once formed one huge land. A single large ocean was around this super-continent.”可知,他相信很久以前世界上只有一块土地,故选D。 【34题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“The second continent also broke apart to form South America, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. The continents were like floating ships at sea, moving to where they are nowadays.”可知,大陆就像海上漂浮的船只,移动到现在的位置,作者把大陆比作成漂浮的船只是为了告诉我们,大陆可以向不同的方向移动,故选D。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Firstly, it is the fossils”“The coastlines of the continents also seem to fit together”以及“Mountain rocks help explain the truth, too”可知,动植物的化石,大陆的海岸线以及山石是相关的证据,故选B。 【36题详解】 推理判断题。本文主要介绍了世界地图的由来以及论证它是正确的方法,属于科学范畴,故选D。 (D) People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls. The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves (波动). Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens. The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can tell chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier. 37. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 1? A. Humans may not like animals. B. Scientists know nothing about it. C. Nobody knows why this happens. D. A new study adds chickens to the list. 38 Which is most probably the sound wave of a happy call by a chicken? A. B. C. D. 39. How did the volunteers help with the research? A. By listening to the chicken calls. B. By taking care of the chickens. C. By finding food for the chickens. D. By making the chickens happy. 40. What is the best title for the passage? A. Farmers Know Chickens Best B. Happy Chickens, Sad Chickens C. Farmers’ Best Choice D. Smart Farmers, Healthy Farmers 【答案】37. D 38. D 39. A 40. (C) Have you ever stared at a map of the world and thought why it looks like this? 33. We can learn from the passage that Alfred Wegener ________ A. was a scientist who enjoyed painting maps. B. carried out a lot of experiments for his research. C. thought that all the continents were formed by a large ocean. D. believed that there was only one piece of land in the world long ago. 34. To show that oceans take up the greatest part of the world. D. To show that the continents can move in different directions. 35. Which of the following is NOT the evidence? A. Fossils of plants and animals. B. Land bridges. C. Coastlines of the continents. D. A mountain chain. 36. Where is this article likely to be found? A. A novel. B. An advertisement. C. A travel guide. D. A scientific magazine. (D) People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. 38. Which is most probably the sound wave of a happy call by a chicken? A. B. C. D.
