Most weeks, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing”and “accomplishment.”I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52. Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance. Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to“climbing a mountain.”In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress.“I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,”he said. Finally, he made it.“I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,”he said.“I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.” This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,”he said. 4 Why did Kevin cry in the classroom? A. He was worried about his future. B. He had reached one of his goals. C. He was moved by a touching story. D. He had experienced something terrible. 5. What was the response of the sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin’s education? A. They recommended a part-time job to him. B. They assessed his suitability for the job. C. They refused him directly. D. They gave him hope. 6. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED? A. By taking time to do things that interest him. B. By reporting his test results to his tutor. C. By writing himself encouraging words. D. By reminding himself of his progress. 7. What can we learn from Kevin’s story? A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. B. The early bird catches the worm. C. Practice makes perfect. D. Grasp all, lose all. C Officials have unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals that will be awarded at this summer’s Olympic games in Paris, and each one contains a unique souvenir: a fragment of waste iron from the Eiffel Tower. “It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.” The Eiffel Tower opened in 1889 and during the later repair work, some of the original iron was cut off and preserved over time. Now, some of those preserved metal fragments have found new homes. Each new Olympic medal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron—though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形),which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut. How did they think of such an idea? Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. We said to ourselves,’ ‘Hey, what if we approached the Eiffel Tower Operating Company to see if it’s possible to get a bit of the Eiffel Tower to integrate into the medal?” When the Eiffel Tower Operating Company agreed to volunteer pieces of original iron, “the dream became reality,” adds Roncin. The medals, designed by the luxury Paris jewelry house Chaumet, make people think of the Eiffel Tower in several other ways. The pieces of iron are secured by what looks like special nails that hold the structure together, and the medals’ ribbons are decorated with patterns of the tower’s latticework structure. The iron fragments are set in recycled silver, gold and bronze disks. Over 5,000 medals are being made. 8. What does Thierry mean by saying “bring back a piece of Paris”? A. Part of the athletes’ medal is from the symbol of Paris. B. The athletes will take many photos of Paris. C. The athletes will buy souvenirs about Paris. D. The Eiffel Tower will be left in the athletes’ memory. 9. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 4? A. The processing technique of the Eiffel Tower iron pieces. B. The shape and material of the Olympic medal. C. The design of the Eiffel Tower iron fragment on the medal. D. The symbolic meaning of the hexagons. 10. How did the designers get the idea of adding the waste iron? A. The Eiffel Tower Operating Company put forward the idea. B The Olympic committee approved of this design. C. Some volunteers considered it to be a good idea. D. They got the inspiration while having discussion. 11. What can we infer about the new Olympic medals? A. They take the shape of the Eiffel Tower. B. They are innovative and typical of French feature. C. They represent a combination of different cultures. D. They illustrate the idea of sustainable development. D The benefits of regular exercise are well documented but there’s a new bonus to add to the ever-growing list. New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (痴呆) in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sporty women. Lead researcher Dr. Helena Horder, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said: “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia.” For the study, 191 women with an average age of 50 took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted to measure their peak (最大值的) cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts. A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category; and 59 women were in the low fitness category, defined as a peak workload of 80 watts or less, or having their exercise tests stopped because of high blood pressure, chest pain or other cardiovascular problems. These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. Five percent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 percent of the women with medium fitness and 32 percent of the women with low fitness. “However, this study does not show cause and effect between cardiovascular fitness and dementia, it only shows an association. More research is needed to see if improved fitness could have a positive effect on the risk of dementia and also to look at when during a lifetime a high fitness level is most important.” She also admitted that a relatively small number of women were studied, all of whom were from Sweden, so the results might not be applicable to other groups. 12. What is on the ever-growing list mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Exercises suitable for the middle-aged. B. Experimental studies on diseases. C. Positive effects of doing exercises. D. Advantages of sporty woman over man. 13. Why did the researchers ask the women to do bicycle exercise? A. To assess their cardiovascular capacity. B. To predict their maximum heart rate. C. To change their habits of working out. D. To detect their potential health problems. 14. What do we know about Dr Horder’s study? A. Data collection was a lengthy process. B. It aimed to find a cure for dementia. C. Some participants drop out of it. D. The results were far from satisfactory. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. More Women Are Exercising to Prevent Dementia B. Middle-Aged Women Need to Do More Exercise C. Biking Improves Women’s Cardiovascular Fitness D. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. ____16____. Since I was an Indian girl, nobody wanted to talk to me. Every spare minute was spent alone, and no classmates would group with me for projects. Feeling lonely and sad, I was in desperate need of close friends, with whom I hoped to share my happiness and sorrow. A girl named Fatin, who was cute, clever and talented, appealed to me deeply. However, she seemed to be avoiding me as well. Being only six years old, I didn’tunderstand why people treated me like that, I opened up to my mother about all this, almost crying my eyes out. Mom smiled patting me on the shoulder and comforting me until I calmed down. She looked into my eyes and encouraged me, “Honey, don’t worry. They’re just not familiar with you. Try to bring out the best in you. They’ll befriend you as long as they see your excellence.” At that time, I didn’t believe her, but Mom was right. One day, my teacher, Miss Bibiena, announced that there was to be a speech competition. My heart pounded wildly. I really enjoyed participating in speech competitions. Actually, I was quite good at them. The only problem was that the whole school would be watching me and I knew none of my audience. However, I was determined to do it. I gathered all my courage, marched up to the teacher and said, “Miss Bibiena, I want to join in the speech competition.” She stared at me for such a long time that I started to feel uncomfortable, but then I saw a gentle smile spreading over her face. She handed me an application form. The next day I arrived at school early to submit my form to the teacher. Taking the form, Miss Bibiena said encouragingly to me, “For a new student, you have lots of courage. Do your best, Sneha!” Rarely did Miss Bibiena praise anyone. On my way to class, I smiled at her remark, which lifted up my spirits that day. Until the competition day, I practised my speech whenever possible. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As I went off the stage, I heard someone call my name. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1-5 ACCBA 6-10 BACAB 11-15 CBAAC 16-20 BCBCA 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 秘密★启用前 2024年邵阳市拔尖创新人才早期培养高一第一次联考试题卷 英语 本试卷共10页,67个小题。 How much is the shirt? 4. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom? 6 How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED? 4. B 5. D 6. D 7. B. The Olympic committee approved of this design. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段““It’s the opportunity for the athletes to bring back a piece of Paris with them,” Thierry Reboul, creative director of Paris 2024, told reporters last week. “The absolute symbol of Paris and France is the Eiffel Tower.””(巴黎2024年奥运会创意总监蒂埃里•雷布尔(Thierry Reboul)上周告诉记者:“对运动员来说,这是一个把巴黎的一部分带回来的机会。”“埃菲尔铁塔是巴黎和法国的绝对象征。”)可知,奖牌上有埃菲尔铁塔上面的碎铁,而埃菲尔铁塔是巴黎的标志性建筑,由此可知,蒂埃里说“带回一片巴黎”指的是运动员的奖牌上有一部分来自巴黎的象征。故选A项。 根据第四段“Each new Olympic medal features a piece of Eiffel Tower iron—though the signature “Eiffel Tower brown” paint has been removed. These pieces have been shaped into hexagons (六边形),which is the “shape of France”. Besides, there are words “Paris 2024”, the Olympic rings and the Games logo, which looks like a flame or the face of a woman with a bob haircut.”(每一枚新的奥运奖牌上都有一块埃菲尔铁塔的铁——尽管标志性的“埃菲尔铁塔棕色”油漆已经被去掉了。 根据第五段“How did they think of such an idea? Joachim Roncin, head of design at the Paris Games organizing committee told the press, “We talked about the design many times and realized that there’s one symbol known across the world, which is the Eiffel Tower. Fit Women Are Less Likely to Develop Dementia 【答案】12. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts.(在这项研究中,191名平均年龄为50岁的女性进行了自行车运动测试,直到她们精疲力竭,以测量她们的心血管峰值能力。)”可知,做这项实验的目的是为了测试女性的心血管峰值能力。故选A项。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第五段“These women were then tested for dementia six times over the following four decades.(这些女性在随后的四十年里测试了六次痴呆症状况。)”可知,此次实验的数据收集是一个长期的过程。故选A项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“New researchers found that middle-aged women who were physically fit could be nearly 90 percent less likely to develop dementia (痴呆) in later life, and as they did, it came on a decade later than less sport y women.(新的研究人员发现,身体健康的中年女性在晚年患痴呆症的可能性要低近90%,而且确实如此,与不太喜欢运动的女性相比,她们患痴呆症的时间要晚十年。)”以及文章后面几段通过列举实验目的、过程、方式、结果等,说明了身体健康的中年女性在老年时患痴呆症的几率会大大降低。故选D项。 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym. ____16____. Instead, it relies on the use of natural means of taking part in activities that improve strength and endurance with as little reliance on equipment as possible. ____17____. For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes. A slightly different approach to green exercise puts more stress on the fresh air, sunshine and involvement with the natural world, rather than the equipment or clothing used during the exercise. ____18____. Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise. Many consider green exercise helps to reconnect human beings with the natural world. The interaction with nature helps to lower people's blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem. ____19____. Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym. ____20____. Meanwhile, the use of fitness devices may result in more challenging workouts which help strengthen the heart and lungs in ways that more simplistic exercise in a natural setting would be difficult to manage. A. A green gym uses as little equipment as possible B. Spirits are also believed to be positively affected C. Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ D. Green exercise includes a range of activities exposed to nature E. So riding a bicycle in the forest can be called a type of green exercise F. It usually doesn't use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym G. Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light 【答案】16. F 17. C 18. E 19. B 20. G 【解析】 【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了一种新的运动方式——绿色运动,不同于在使用健身房的健身设施,更强调与大自然的接触,表明其利弊。 【16题详解】 根据上文“Green exercise is a term used to describe any type of physical exercise that takes place in a natural environment rather than in a health club or gym.(绿色运动是一个术语,用于描述在自然环境中进行的任何类型的体育锻炼,而不是在健身俱乐部或健身房中。)”开头介绍绿色运动不同于在健身房的锻炼,空格处承上启下,以及后文的“Instead,”表明空格处的意义与后文相反。因此,空格处应继续说明绿色运动与健身房运动的不同之处,F项“It usually doesn't use fitness equipment that is normally found in a gym (它通常不使用健身房里常见的健身器材)”符合文意,提到了“gym”,与上下文一致。故选F。 【17题详解】 根据后文“For example, some consider a truly natural exercise experience requires that the individual wear clothing only made from natural fibers. Others consider barefoot running or walking with a big arena to be more desirable than running or walking with shoes.(例如,一些人认为,真正自然的运动体验要求人只穿天然纤维制成的衣服。其他人则认为赤脚跑步或在大型竞技场上行走,比穿着鞋子跑步或行走更可取。)”从两个方面举例说明了两种不同的绿色运动方式。因此空格处总结性说明不同的人,对于什么是真正的绿色运动观点不同。C项“Opinions on what truly green exercise means differ (人们对什么是真正的绿色运动意见不一)”符合文意。故选C。 【18题详解】 根据后文“Similarly, climbing a mountain using standard equipment and protective clothing would also be considered a green exercise.(同样,使用标准设备和防护服爬山也将被视为绿色运动。)”表明什么样的锻炼会被视为绿色运动,由“Similarly,”可知,空格处也是在介绍绿色运动的类型,而E项中“can be called a type of green exercise”与后文中的“also be considered a green exercise”结构一致,都是在介绍绿色运动的类型,E项“So riding a bicycle in the forest can be called a type of green exercise (因此,在森林里骑自行车可以被称为一种绿色运动)”符合文意。故选E。 【19题详解】 根据前文“The interaction with nature helps to lower peoples’ blood pressure, refresh their mind, and actually improve their self-esteem.(与大自然的互动有助于降低人们的血压,更新他们的思维,并真正地提高他们的自尊。)”介绍了绿色运动对于身体、头脑和心理健康的优点,而B项“Spirits are also believed to be positively affected (人们认为,精神也会受到积极影响)”承接上文,接着说明了绿色运动在精神上的积极影响。故选B。 【20题详解】 根据上文“Not everyone believes that the green exercise is more beneficial than working out in a health club or gym.(并非所有人都认为绿色运动比在健身俱乐部或健身房锻炼更有益。)”可知,该段在介绍另一种观点,指出使用健身器材锻炼也有好处,以及“Meanwhile, …”后文说明使用健身器材有利于增强心肺功能。因此,空格处也是在讲述健身俱乐部或者健身房的优点,G项“Some point out that many health clubs are built to make full use of natural light (一些人指出,许多健身俱乐部都是为了充分利用自然光而建的)”符合文意,其中的“many health clubs”与上文的“in a health club or gym”上下一致。故选G。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I was shocked when my socially awkward sister, who had suffered from Asperger Syndrome (阿斯伯格综合症), decided to sing in front of the school. Mom smiled, patting me on the shoulder and comforting me until I calmed down. The next day, I arrived at school early to submit my form to the teacher. Taking the form, Miss Bibiena said encouragingly to me, “For a new student, you have lots of courage. Do your best, Sneha!” Rarely did Miss Bibiena praise anyone. On my way to class, I smiled at her remark, which lifted up my spirits that day. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Until the competition day, I practised my speech whenever possible. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As I went off the stage, I heard someone call my name. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Until the competition day, I practiced my speech whenever possible. I even designed the necessary hand gestures and did repeated practice in front of a mirror. Then came the big day. When my name was called, I went up to the stage confidently and started presenting my speech with full enthusiasm. As I had expected, it was a real hit. The moment my speech ended, I was greeted with a standing ovation from the audience. Finally, I was declared the winner of the first prize and awarded the title of Best Speaker. As I went off the stage, I heard someone call my name. Turning around, I found Fatin, the girl I admired, waving to me. She approached me and said cheerfully, “Hey, Sneha! You gave us such an amazing speech. Never had I expected you to be so great! Would you like to be friends with me?” “Sure, Fatin.” I happily accepted her friendship invitation without any hesitation. Since then, the two of us have supported and inspired each other through thick and thin. So take up your courage and show your best to the world. Some day you can achieve what you initially dreamt of. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走上前:go up to/come over to ②宣布:declare/ announce ③走近:approach/ get close to 情绪类 ①开心地:happily/cheerfully ②自信地:confidently/in confidence 【点睛】[高分句型1]When my name was called, I went up to the stage confidently and started presenting my speech with full enthusiasm.
