Have you heard of these four monuments?
Carhenge, Floralis Genérica, Traffic Light Tree and Hand of the Desert—these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit.
• Carhenge
Carhenge is in Alliance, Nebraska (USA). It has a lot in common with Stonehenge. But while Stonehenge was built with stones, Carhenge was created with cars. The monument was made by a local artist Jim Reinders. He used old cars and even an ambulance. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town.
• Floralis Genérica
Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. It stands in a pool of water in front of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eduardo Catalano, a native of Argentina, gave the statue as a gift to the city in 2002. Every morning, the flower opens. In fact, many people believe it is one of the most beautiful statues in the world.
• Traffic Light Tree
The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998. A computer controls the lights, which are turned on and off randomly.
• Mano del Desierto (Hand of the Desert)
The Hand of the Desert is in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sculpture was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. From a distance, it looks as if there’s a giant in the sand who has stuck his hand out of the ground.
If you’re looking for something new to see, you know where to go!
21. Why did the people of Alliance change their attitude toward Carhenge?
A. It reminded them of Stonehenge. B. It brought them financial benefits.
C. It added beauty to their community. D. It displayed the creativity of the designer.
22. Which of the four monuments was designed by a foreign artist?
A. Carhenge. B. Floralis Genérica.
C. Traffic Light Tree. D. Mano del Desierto.
23. Where is the text probably from?
A. A guide book. B. A news report.
C. A science magazine. D. An architecture advertisement.
B
It was a cold May morning when I received an email from an old friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had to say yes. The trip seemed simple enough. 10 women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, were to meet on the coast of Portugal to try something new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss asking for time off to make the trip.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more about less. Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.
I met my new surfing companions on the grass of the hotel lawn in a small surf town called Ericeira. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a strong desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to ride.
Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air. Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humility (谦虚) that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on. While surfing might not be my lifelong passion, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.
24. What inspired the author to join the surf trip?
A. Her love for seashore surfing. B. Her desire to make new friends.
C. Her need to take a break from work. D. Her passion for exploring something new.
25. What does the author think of adults’ focusing on mastering one field?
A. It hurts one’s pride. B. It narrows one’s potential.
C. It promotes one’s career success. D. It broadens one’s view of the world.
26. Which words can best describe the author’s surfing experience?
A. Relaxing but dangerous. B. Tough and uninteresting.
C. Challenging but rewarding. D. Surprising and unforgettable.
27. What can be inferred about the author?
A. She used to lack confidence in herself.
B. She determined to become an expert surfer.
C. She discovered her lifelong passion after the trip.
D. She was more willing to try new experiences in life.

Education in 2080 is distinctive from education in the 2020s. Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child’s education looks like in 2080. Her name is Shemsy. Shemsy is 13, and she is confident and loves learning.
Shemsy does not go to school in the morning because schools as you know them no longer exist. The institution was abolished as it was widely thought of as more like a prison or a factory than a creative learning environment. Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages. They are where intergenerational learning happens, in line with the belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Every year Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”. Shemsy is actively engaged in designing her education and has to propose projects she would like to be involved in to contribute to and serve her community. She also spends lots of time playing as the role of play in learning has finally been recognized as essential and core to our humanity. Shemsy works a lot collaboratively. Access to education is universal, and higher education institutions no longer differentiate themselves by how many people they reject yearly. Variability between students is expected and leveraged (利用) as young people teach one another and use their differences as a source of strength. Shemsy naturally explores what she is curious about at a pace she sets. She still has some classes to take that are mandatory for children globally: Being Human and the History of Humanity.
We invite you to think about your vision for education in the year 2080, what does it look like, who does it serve, and how does it transform our societies?
28. What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. There are different types of education.
B. The present education needs improvements.
C. Education and economy are closely associated.
D. The goal of future education is fundamentally different.
29. What do we know about the Learning Hub that Shemsy goes to?
A. It accepts students of all ages. B. It promotes competition.
C. It discourages individualized learning. D. It is all about play-based learning.
30. What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Tough. B. Satisfactory. C. Optional. D. Required.
31. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. An Example to All B. A Vision for Education
C. A Challenge for Education D. A Journey into the Future
D
Building artificial intelligences that sleep and dream can lead to more dependable models, according to researchers who aim to mimic (模仿) the behavior of the human brain.
Concetto Spampinato and his research members at the University of Catania, Italy, were looking for ways to avoid a phenomenon known as “disastrous forgetting”, where an AI model trained to do a new task loses the ability to carry out jobs it previously excelled at. For instance, a model trained to identify animals could learn to spot different fish species, but then might lose its ability to recognize birds. They developed a method of training AI called Wake-Sleep Consolidated Learning (WSCL), which mimics the way that our brains reorganize short-term memories of daily learning when we are asleep.
Besides the usual training for the “awake” phase, models using WSCL are programmed to have periods of “sleep”, where they analyze awake data from earlier lessons. This is similar to human spotting connections and patterns while sleeping.
WSCL also has a period of “dreaming”, which involves novel data made from combining previous concepts. This helps to integrate previous paths of digital “neurons (神经元)”, freeing up space for future concepts. It also prepares unused neurons with patterns that will help them pick up new lessons more easily.
The researchers tested three AI models using a traditional training method, followed by WSCL training. Then they compared performances for image identification. The sleep-trained models were 2 to 12 percent more likely to correctly identify the contents of an image. They also measured an increase in how much old knowledge a model uses to learn a new task.
Despite the results, Andrew Rogoyski at the University of Surrey, UK, says using the human brain as a blueprint isn’t necessarily the best way to boost AI performance. Instead, he suggests mimicking dolphins, which can “sleep” with one part of the brain while another part remains active. After all, an AI that requires hours of sleep isn’t ideal for commercial applications.
32. WSCL was developed to help improve AI’s ______.
A. reliability B. creativity C. security D. popularity
33. What do models using WSCL do during the “sleeping” periods?
A. Generate new data. B. Process previous data.
C. Receive data for later analysis. D. Save data for the “awake” phase.
34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The application of WSCL. B. The benefits of AI research.
C. The findings of the research. D. The underlying logic of WSCL.
35. Which best describes Andrew’s attitude towards the sleep-trained models?
A. Cautious. B. Prejudiced. C. Pessimistic. D. Unconcerned.

Have you ever received an invitation that you couldn’t accept? Do you struggle with how to decline without hurting someone’s feelings or causing conflict? Does it bother you to turn someone down? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you’re not alone. In fact, this happens to most people at some time in their lives. ____36____ Here are some tips on how to turn down an invitation in the most polite way.
Don’t wait and don’t ignore the invitation.
As soon as you know you will be unable to go, let the person know. Most events require planning and budgeting. ____37____ She needs to know whether or not you’ll be there. Ignoring the invitation shows that you don’t know proper etiquette (礼节), and you might be left off the guest list for her next party.
____38____

Don’t tell lies and don’t over-explain.
You don’t ever have to come up with false excuses for why you’re unable to go to the event, but you also don’t have to go into detail. ____39____ That should be enough. And remember that when you give reasons, keep your explanation short and to the point. Doing otherwise will make it sound like you’re just trying to make up excuses.
Ask for a different time.
If the invitation is exclusive (独有的) to you, let the person know you’re unable to make it at the time she requested, ____40____
A. Express appreciation for the invitation.

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” She instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.
Joyce who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan , an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, "Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board (电路板). The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for the math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations (运算) to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed up. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated by the exhibition.

Every country has several important holidays which can be national, religious or simply cultural. For example, people usually celebrate the start of spring on January first. Many holidays are celebrated in the winter, which is why this period is also known as the holiday season.
Christmas is the biggest annual holiday for the Christian world celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

25 What does the author think of adults’ focusing on mastering one field?
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. D

C
Every year, Shemsy designs her learning journey for the year with a highly attentive “teacher-citizen”.
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. D 31. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是对2080年的教育的展望。
【28题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Until about 2035, the main function of education systems was to supply the economy with the next generation of workers. In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members.(直到2035年左右,教育系统的主要功能是为经济提供下一代工人。在2080年,教育的目的是社会及其所有成员的福祉。)”可知,第一段主要告诉我们未来教育的目标是完全不同的。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Schools have been replaced with “Learning Hubs” that are not restricted to certain ages.(学校已经被不受年龄限制的“学习中心”所取代。)”可知,Shemsy去的学习中心接受所有年龄的学生。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“In 2080, the purpose of education is the well-being of society and all its members. To make this a bit more tangible for you, I would like to give an example of what a child’s education looks like in 2080.(在2080年,教育的目的是社会及其所有成员的福祉。为了让你们更明白这一点,我想举一个2080年儿童教育的例子。)”可知,本文主要介绍的是对2080年的教育的展望,因此最恰当的标题是B选项“A Vision for Education(教育远景)”。故选B。

【答案】32 A 33. B 34. C 35. A

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Besides the usual training for the “awake” phase, models using WSCL are programmed to have periods of “sleep”, where they analyze awake data from earlier lessons.(除了通常的“清醒”阶段的训练之外,使用WSCL的模型还被编程为有“睡眠”阶段,在那里它们分析来自早期课程的清醒数据)”可知,使用WSCL的模型在“睡眠”期间处理之前的数据。故选B。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“The researchers tested three AI models using a traditional training method, followed by WSCL training. Then they compared performances for image identification. The sleep-trained models were 2 to 12 percent more likely to correctly identify the contents of an image. They also measured an increase in how much old knowledge a model uses to learn a new task.(研究人员先采用传统训练方法对三款人工智能模型进行训练,随后再对它们施以醒眠整合学习(WSCL)训练。
根据最后一段“Despite the results, Andrew Rogoyski at the University of Surrey, UK, says using the human brain as a blueprint isn’t necessarily the best way to boost AI performance.
Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan , an average.

【答案】参考范文
It was Joyce’s turn to display his project. Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated them on their success sincerely. That day Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.
