(22-23八年级上·江苏扬州·阶段练习)American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of (而不是) “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful. They usually say all the words one by one.
Sound is not only the difference. Words sometimes have different meanings too. For example, the words for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions(表达) are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”
Most languages are like this. Languages change (变化) over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. (22-23八年级上·江苏扬州·阶段练习)On a school day, 60 students at Xishan Primary School in Shunde, Guangdong, are learning how to make corn soup and fried rice in an after-school cooking class. Working in groups of four or five, the little cooks take their responsibilities (责任) very seriously. Soon, they are showing off their own delicious dishes.
“Since last September, the school has set up after-school classes for students, with cooking classes being the most popular”, said Xinhua. It comes after the “double reduction” policy (政策). The policy aims to ease the burdens (负担) of too much homework and off-campus tutoring (课外辅导) for primary and junior high school students.
The policy lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and difficulty of homework, as well as improving the quality (质量) of education and after-school services. For example, homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish. It gives students more free time for their hobbies and interests. Also, off-campus tutoring has been further regulated (管理) to reduce the burden on students.
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks any more. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers have taught at a much slower pace, which gives students enough time to study.
In December, the Ministry of Education reported on the progress (进步) made through the policy so far. Almost all primary and middle schools now offer two-hour after-school services on weekdays. More than 90 percent of students can finish their written homework in the set time. About 92.7 percent of schools have opened after-school arts and sports classes. More than 80 percent of academic tutoring institutions (学科类校外培训机构) have closed down or turned to other fields of business.
“With homework done at school, my child and I can read books and listen to music together in the evening, or we can go out to play badminton or skip rope,” said Lu Di, the parent of a fifth-grader in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang.

Then she started walking again. Tom was so surprised that he could think of nothing to say. And he was filled with anger. If she were a boy, he knew that he would fight her.

The teacher, Mr. Bobbins often took a mysterious book out of his desk and read it. He would never allow anybody to touch it. (22-23八年级上·江苏南京·阶段练习)Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot(战车). But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot” around the sky.
So what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts absorb power from the sun. They absorb so much power that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths, Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.
This plane is called Solar Impulse(太阳驱动号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.
So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything, and there’s no pollution.
Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight.
54.What does “chariot” really refer to in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?
A.The Earth. B.The Greek god. C.Solar Impulse. D.Birds.
55.What does the writer mean by “That’s a pretty long flight”?
A.Solar Impulse moves very slowly.
B.Solar Impulse will be in use for a long time.
C.It takes a lot of time to get Solar Impulse going.
D.Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the sun.
56.The passage is most probably taken from ________.
A.a Greek myth B.a science fiction C.a story-book D.a science magazine

④ The following tips can help you protect your eyes.
●When using a computer, you’d better make text size bigger until your eyes feel comfortable.
●When you are using mobile devices (设备), keep them at least 30 cm from your eyes. Try not to use your mobile phone in direct sunlight.

(22-23八年级上·江苏镇江·阶段练习)When you enjoy a meal with your friends, how do you pay the bill? Does one person pay for everything? Or do you prefer (宁愿) to split the bill evenly instead? With mobile payments, many young people prefer the latter.
Surprisingly, this can cause problems sometimes. Let’s say the bill for your lunch is 63 yuan. You and two friends decide to pay it evenly three ways — this means each person should pay 21 yuan.
One of your friends says he’ll pay the full bill first. You and your other friend can give him what you owe (欠). It’s easy to pay the bill this way. You send your friend a We Chat red packet with the exact amount. Your other friend just gives him 20 yuan because he doesn’t have enough money in his account. Your friend who pays the bill might say there is no need to give him the rest, and so the other doesn’t.
Guess what? The friend who paid for lunch probably thinks more highly of you than your other friend. Why is this?
It’s because you agreed to split the bill evenly. Everyone should pay the same amount. Your friend who didn’t pay enough didn’t stick to your agreement (约定). This might make his credit (信用) drop, even if just a little bit.
61.What does the phrase “split the bill evenly” mean in Chinese?
A.全额支付 B.分期付款 C.平均分摊 D.信用消费
62.How much did the friend who paid the bill actually spend?
A.63 yuan. B.20 yuan. C.21 yuan. D.22 yuan.
63.What did your other friend do wrong?
A.He wanted to save some money.
B.He didn’t follow the agreement.
C.He didn’t have a good reason for not paying the right amount.
D.He knew his friends wouldn’t care if he paid less.
