Yogurt, a common food in many diets, is often ____1____ as a very
healthy choice. Its flexibility(灵活性)—____2____ smoothies to
bowls with granola (格兰诺拉麦片)—makes it popular. Over the past
25 years, yogurt consumption in the United States ____3____ by 142
percent, with sales continuing to rise.
However, not all yogurt is the same. Danone(达能食品公司)
sells YoCrunch cups, flavored yogurt(风味酸奶) with toppings such as M&Ms and Snickers(士力
架) pieces. Such products blur(使模糊) the line between yogurt and dessert. ____4____ yogurt is
basically fermented(发酵的) milk, which has ____5____ good nutrients, some types are far from
health.
Supermarket yogurts ____6____ a lot in sugar, fat, protein(蛋白质), and calorie content. Some
brands, such as Oikos Pro, add extra protein, making them much ____7____ to health-conscious
buyers. Yet, ____8____ so-called healthy image of yogurt often hides less desirable things, like high
sugar content.
Probiotics((益生菌)), found in some yogurts, may offer health benefits, but these effects
____9____ last only if you eat it ____10____. As the New York University nutrition professor
Marion Nestle has written, “Yogurt, it seems, has performed a marketing miracle: it is a fast-selling
dessert with the image of a health food.” But if a food or nutrient has a “health halo(光环),” people
will eat just about ____11____ associated with it: sugary protein bars, fatty plant-based burgers, kale
chips.
Yogurt shows the best and worst of American ____12____ habits: trying to be healthy without
____13____ up junk food. “Healthy treats” have become an American necessity, producing
contradictory(相互矛盾的) inventions ____14____ include probiotic sodas, keto gummy bears,
and skinny margaritas. Perhaps we’d be more satisfied without these unnecessary actions. An M&M-
flavored yogurt won’t make you healthier, so just enjoy it for ____15____ it is: dessert.

Tom Canty is a boy who used to live in Pudding Lane, a very poor area of London. Tom’s father
sent him out to beg for money every day. But he is now sitting in the prince’s place on soft silk cushions
in a royal boat. Princess Elizabeth and Lady Jane Grey are sitting beside him. He cannot believe this
is really happening.
When they arrive at the centre of the City of London, they leave the boat and Tom leads the line
of nobles. They walk through the streets to Guildhall. The Mayor of London and other important people
are there to welcome them. After a short time, servants arrive with food and drinks, and soon everyone
starts eating and drinking.
After dinner, more nobles enter the hall. They are wearing exotic costumes (异域服饰) and
colored hats. There are also musicians and singers who sing and dance with people around.
Young Tom watches everything with interest.
At the same time, outside the Guildhall, without having anything to eat the real prince Edward is
wearing Tom’s dirty old clothes. He wants to go in. “Let me in. I am Edward the Prince of Wales,”
Edward shouts.
A crowd of people are standing around him, laughing at him. This makes Edward even more angry.
“I tell you. I am the Prince of Wales,” he continues, “I’m alone and I have no friends to help me but
I’m the real prince and I’m not leaving.”
At that moment, a man comes to Edward and says, “You are not alone. My name is Miles Hendon
and I am your friend now.”
The crowd laughs at Miles, too.
“________,” one man shouts and the others laugh more.
“Let’s throw the dirty beggar in the water,” another man shouts.
Miles stands in front of Edward to protect him. He pulls out his sword but the people move forward.
At that moment a trumpet is sounded and the king’s soldiers pass through the crowd. They have a
message from the palace. The crowd run away. Miles lifts Edward up and carries him away from danger.

I looked through the window of the charming little violin shop, and my heart began to race.
I'd been out to dinner that evening. Since it wasn't dark yet after the meal, I decided to walk
home from the restaurant. I had traveled that way before, yet I had never noticed that old little shop.
But that night I felt drawn to the violin shop the moment I came across it.
I wiped the dirt from the window to get a better look inside. Several violins hung from the dark
walls, quietly waiting to be chosen. As my eyes rested on them, I felt as though I were looking
through a window into my own past.

My childhood was all about the pursuits I had attempted, most of which had been chosen by
Mom. She was like, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer; surely you will be,
too.” What she refused to acknowledge, however, was that I was visibly afraid of water.
Every Saturday I begged Mom not to make me go to the swim meet, but had little chance of
success. That said, with a bang of the starting gun, I would dive into the cold water with all my
strength and swim to the other side of the pool as fast as I could, only to find that the other swimmers
slid past me. I would have given it up if I had not heard my father's encouraging shouts to cheer me
on. When at last my hand would grab the edge of the pool, he would always be there with a warm,
dry towel, telling me how proud he was of my desperate efforts.
Then came a turning point in my life the day our school orchestra( 管弦乐队)visited my class,
and gave a demonstration. The drums annoyed me. The flutes(笛子)bored me. But the violin…ah,
the violin. It made the sweetest sound I'd ever heard! My heart was dancing along with its flowing
tune. For the first time in my life, I went so wild with joy.
Tightly holding the permission slip from the orchestra director, I ran all the way home after
school, and shakily handed it to my parents with a fear that they might dismiss my desire. They
didn't. Mom was thrilled to see me finally excited about something, and Dad winked(眨眼示意)at
me while eagerly signing the slip.
I began practicing the violin with great passion, and rose quickly in ability. Before long I had
won the first seat in the community orchestra …
30. What did the sight of the violins in that little shop bring to Tara's mind?
A. Her miserable past. B. An unforgettable sport event.
C. The stories behind the violins. D. Her childhood memory.
31. What Dad did for Tara during the swimming competition implies that he is ________.
A. mindless and bad-tempered B. caring and supportive
C. strict and demanding D tolerant and sympathetic
32. What enabled Tara to win the first seat in the community orchestra?
A. The steady improvement in her taste. B. Her strong desire for success.
C. Her natural gift for music. D. The rapid progress in her ability.
33. What message does Tara's story convey(传达)?
A. It's never too young to learn. B. A passionate interest works wonders.
C. Hard work will pay off in the long run. D. Like mother, like daughter.

Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all
have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.
Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.
“You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a
one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications
officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length
you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”
It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program
was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works.
Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we
do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now,
we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you

would be a published artist.”
Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so
could short stories save transit?
Trost thinks so.
“At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve
the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she
says.
And you’ll never be without something to read.
34. Why did BART start the kiosk program?
A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use.
C. To meet passengers’ needs. D. To reduce its running costs.
35. How are the stories categorized(分类) in the kiosk?
A. By popularity. B. By length. C. By theme. D. By language.
36. What has Trost been doing recently?
A. Organizing a story contest. B. Doing a survey of customers.
C. Choosing a print publisher. D. Conducting interviews with artists.
37. What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future?
A. It will close down. B. Its profits will decline.
C. It will expand nationwide. D. Its ridership will increase.

*Rare beef is popular, but you should
know that cooking it to only 140℉ means
some food poisoning organisms may
survive.
Bacteria(细菌) are one of the main food prisoners. So, to get food on the table safely, you need
to know and follow the rules for food care.
KEEP FOOD HOT
High food temperatures (165℉ to 212℉) reached in boiling, baking, frying, and roasting kill most
food poisoning bacteria. If you want to delay serving cooked food, though, you have to keep it at a
holding temperature — roughly 140℉ to 165℉. Steam tables and chafing dishes(保温锅) are
designed to maintain holding temperatures. But they don’t always keep food hot enough. So it’s not
wise to leave hot food out more than 2 hours.
When cooked food is left out unheated, the possibility of bacterial growth is greater, since the food
quickly drops to room temperature where food poisoners multiply.
To serve hot foods safely — particularly meat and poultry, which are highly affected by food
poisoning — follow these rules:
● Cook thoroughly — Cook meat and poultry to the “doneness” temperatures given in the above
chart. To make sure that meat and poultry are cooked all the way through, use a meat thermometer (温

度计). Insert the tip into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding fat or bone.
● Don’t interrupt cooking — Cook meat and poultry completely at one time. Partial cooking may
encourage bacterial growth before cooking is complete.
● Cooking frozen food — Allow frozen food more time to cook — generally 1.5 times the period
required for food that has been thawed (解冻).
38. At what temperature do bacteria grow the fastest?
A. 40℉~60℉. B. 60℉~125℉.
C. 125℉~140℉. D.140℉~165℉.
39. To keep food safe, it is suggested that ________.
A. hot food should not be left out over two hours
B. frozen food should be thawed with a microwave oven
C. raw ham should be cooked to the “doneness” temperature at 71℉
D. steam tables and chafing dishes should be used to keep food hot enough
40. What can be learned according to the guideline?
A. The only way to ensure food safety is to keep it hot enough.
B. High food temperatures above 165℉ destroy most poisoning bacteria.
C. Compared with goose, ground beef should be cooked to higher temperatures.
D. Insert the tip of a thermometer into the thickest part of the fat to control the temperature.

You’ve probably heard of books that will change your life. And a lot of readers agree that the
book Atomic Habits will meet your needs.
James Clear, who did a lot of research on formation of habits, is the writer of Atomic Habits.
41 It has sold over 15 million copies and has been translated into more than 50 languages. And his
website receives millions of visitors each month.
42 That’s because the book introduces a practical system for creating good habits and
breaking bad ones. Readers everywhere are very interested in Clear’s “science of tiny habits”.
In the book, file writer suggests trying to get 1% better each day. For example, you’d like to
exercise but you don’t think you have the time or energy. Clear suggests starting with two minutes a
day. Over time, the effects of this habit will increase as you repeat the actions. 43 “All big
things come from small beginnings,” says Clear.
Clear continues with the following advice: Don’t focus on what you want to achieve. 44
For example, two men want to break the habit of smoking. When offered a cigarette, one says, “No,
thanks. I’m trying to give up smoking.” The other says, “No, thanks. I’m not a smoker.” While the first
man still sees himself as a smoker, the second man doesn’t. Clear says, “Bad habits will die more easily
if you focus on who you want to become.”
Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success. 45 Slowly but
surely, it will have a great effect on your health, job and relationships.
A.Why is it so popular?
B.Instead, focus on who you want to become.
C.He calls these repeated actions “atomic habits”.
