5 Tips for Students Living Away From Home
Don’t Skip Orientation Week
Be involved! It’s the most effective way to make friends during the first couple weeks of being away from home. I am a fairly quiet person, and I came to university without knowing anyone. It was a little hard at first, but as long as you participate and keep your spirits up, you should make new friends in no time.
Resist the Urge to Go Home
I would suggest not making a habit of going home every weekend so you won’t miss out on things that happen during the weekend at school. Try to avoid going home the weekend after O-Week ends, or for all of September if possible. The first month will be the biggest adjustment and it’s just easier to settle in, hang out with people and explore the city on weekends.
Stay Connected
I message and text my sister often and Facebook my friends to keep connected. Making new friends and diving into activities and homework is a great way to keep yourself occupied, but in those moments when you are feeling incredibly lonely and wondering what your mom is making for dinner, you need something extra. My recommendation is to have a couple photo albums to look through. It’s also a good idea to make a plan to have a friend or family member come visit you. That way you have a piece of home to look forward to.
Spend Time on Campus
I met many off-campus people during O-week and in my classes, and some are now my best friends. Get involved in clubs, talk to people and don’t go home immediately after your classes are done.
Live in Residence Halls(寄宿)
What you have to remember is that everybody else is going through the exact same thing, so take comfort in that. Get to know your floor, let them become your home away from home and you’ll see that you’ll get through it easier than you thought. My residence holds lots of events such as parties and mixers for us to meet new people. I’ve attended all the events in my residence and school, and I’ve met tons of awesome people! What I’d say is: don’t be shy, and socialize. You’ll make friends in no time. I’ve found residence halls to be beneficial, because my floor has helped each other through the transition (过渡时期). People living on your floor are more likely to understand your problems with school rather than your friends from high school who go to other universities.
21. When you feel extremely lonely, you are advised to ______.
A. go back home immediately
B. invite a friend to visit you
C. devote yourself to homework
D. Facebook your friends or family
22. Why is it beneficial to live in residence halls?
A. It is full of people with the same experience
B. It is as comfortable as your own house
C. It is convenient to hold parties and activities
D. It’s similar to your old school
23. Who might be most interested in reading the text?
A. Graduates B. Job-hunters C. Parents D. Freshmen
【答案】21. B 22. A 23. D

Joint News Network: Five years ago, an 8-year-old Irish girl called Becky made a phone call to a demolition (爆破) company asking them to destroy her school and, if possible, to make sure all her teachers were in there. The thrilling request in sharp contrast to the sweet voice sounded terrifying. Ever since then, the recording has been being transferred and soon she has turned Internet meme.
According to the report, in not an anxious, nor a slow voice, Becky said that the teachers were always giving her extra homework on a Friday and therefore she wanted the demolition men to blow the school up, better with all her teachers in it. She also asked how much it would cost them to knock down as big an area as a ballpark.
The clerks of the company burst into laughter the very moment they received the call, which seemed to annoy the girl, who questioned, “Is this a demolition company or a joke factory?” Only then did they bite their lips to keep from laughing and ask, “What for?” The girl gave them her proposal and then asked them some details of the deal. Before hanging up, she said emphatically that she would fax the company the plan of the school and her teachers’ names.
As soon as the local station broadcast the telephone recording, the sweet and cute girl turned famous overnight. She was then invited on TV programs, where she was reported to smile purely and fly back and forth.
24. Becky called the demolition company in order to _______.
A. become famous B. amuse the clerks
C. destroy her school D. threaten her teachers
25. Why did Becky ask “Is this a demolition company or a joke factory?” (Para. 3)
A. She doubted if she was calling a correct company.
B. She seemed to hear someone laughing on the phone.
C. It showed her dissatisfaction with the clerks’ laughter.
D. It is a common telephone term when greeting each other.
26. Which of the following gives you the strongest belief that Becky was serious about her request?
A. She didn’t mind the clerks’ laughing.
B. She would send the plan of the school.
C. She asked some knowledge of demolition.
D. She asked the cost of the demolition work.
27. Why did the clerks laugh?
A. An easy and great business came.
B. Becky’s sweet voice amused them.
C. They wanted to calm the girl.
D. They didn’t take it seriously.
【答案】24. C 25. C 26. B 27. D

【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。文章报道了一个8岁的小女孩给爆破公司打电话,要求他们摧毁她的学校的故事。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段第一句“Joint News Network: Five years ago, an 8-year-old Irish girl called Becky made a phone call to a demolition company asking them to destroy her school and, if possible, to make sure all her teachers were in there.(联合新闻网:五年前,一个名叫贝基的8岁爱尔兰女孩给一家爆破公司打了一个电话,要求他们摧毁她的学校,如果可能的话,确保她所有的老师都在那里。)”可知,贝基打电话给爆破公司是为了要求他们摧毁她的学校。故选C项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据划线句子前的部分“The clerks of the company burst into laughter the very moment they received the call, which seemed to annoy the girl, who questioned…(公司的职员们接到电话的那一刻就大笑起来,这似乎惹恼了那个女孩,她问……)”可以推论出,小女孩问“这是爆破公司还是玩笑工厂?”是因为她对店员们的笑声感到不满。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的句子“The girl gave them her proposal and then asked them some details of the deal. Before hanging up, she said emphatically that she would fax the company the plan of the school and her teachers’ names.(女孩给了他们她的建议,然后问了他们交易的一些细节。在挂断电话之前,她强调说她会把学校的计划和老师的名字传真给公司。)”可以推论出,从贝基会寄来学校的规划图可以看出她是认真的。故选B项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“According to the report, in not an anxious, nor a slow voice, Becky said that the teachers were always giving her extra homework on a Friday and therefore she wanted the demolition men to blow the school up, better with all her teachers in it. She also asked how much it would cost them to knock down as big an area as a ballpark.(据报道,贝基说,老师们总是在星期五给她布置额外的作业,所以她想让爆破工人把学校炸了,把她所有的老师都炸了会更好。她的声音既不着急,也不缓慢。她还问,把一个棒球场这么大的地方拆掉要花多少钱。)”可以推论出,爆破公司的工作人员没把一个孩子的话当回事,所以他们笑了。故选D项。
C
A typical lion tamer (驯兽师) in people’s mind is an entertainer holding a whip (鞭子)and a chair .The whip get all of the attention , but it’s mostly for show .In reality , it’s the chair that does the important work .When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face , the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time .With its focus divided , the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next .When faced with so many options , the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair.
How often do you find yourself in the same position as the lion ? How often do you have something you want to achieve (e,g. lose weight , start a business , travel more ) –only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress ?
This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best , the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information .The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things , and so we take less action , make less progress , and stay the same when we could be improving .
It doesn’t have to be that way .Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face , remember this :All you need to do is focus on one thing .You just need to get started .Starting before you feel ready is one of the habits of successful people .If you have somewhere you want to go , something you want to accomplish , someone you want to become ….take immediate action .If you’re clear about where you want to go , the rest of the world will either help you get there or get out the way .
28. Why does the lion tamer use a chair?
A. To trick the lion.
B. To show off his skill .
C. To get ready for a fight.
D. To entertain the audience.
29. In what sense are people similar to a lion facing a chair?
A. They feel puzzled over choices.
B. They hold on to the wrong things.
C. They find it hard to make changes.
D. They have to do something for show.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards the experts mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Tolerant
B. Doubtful
C. Respectful
D. Supportive
31. When the world is “waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to_____.
A. wait for a better chance
B. break your old habits
C. make a quick decision
D. ask for clear guidance
【答案】28. A 29. A 30. B 31. C
When a lion tamer holds a chair in front of the lion’s face , the lion tries to focus on all four legs of the chair at the same time .With its focus divided , the lion becomes confused and is unsure about what to do next .When faced with so many options , the lion chooses to freeze and wait instead of attacking the man holding the chair. 故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段的最后“only to end up confused by all of the options in front of you and never make progress”可知,结果被摆在你面前的所有选择弄得不知所措,再也没有进步。所以人类和狮子的相似之处是:面临许多选择时会感到困惑。故选A项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段第一句This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best , the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information .
Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face , remember this :All you need to do is focus on one thing .You just need to get started .可知,当你发现这个世界在你的面前挥舞着椅子时,你要做的事情就是把注意力集中在一件事情上,你需要的就是开始。也就是迅速做出决定。故选C项。

An immersive and slow-paced Citywalk is becoming trendy across China. In contrast to rushing past overcrowded tourist landmarks, the new trend has emerged as a popular alternative to explore bustling markets, ancient streets, and charming alleys at a leisurely pace.
The appeal of Citywalk caters particularly to the younger generation often caught up in demanding work schedules. As evidenced by the increasing popularity of hash tags like “City walk for vacation” on lifestyle sharing platform Xiaohong shu, with a staggering 465 million views and nearly 464, 600 engagements, the trend is truly capturing unbelievable attention.
Citywalk, or meandering through the urban landscapes, means the act of walking freely along city streets unburdened by exhaustive plans. It offers people an avenue to intimately experience urban culture and local traditions. Citywalk is not merely about sightseeing. It creates an opportunity for social interactions and deep connections with the cities. Citywalk routes are tailored to the specific interests of both out-of-town tourists and locals. For tourists, the focus is on sharing local customs and traditions, while for locals, discussions revolve around the city’s past, present, and future. The growing trend of Citywalk reflects a changing attitude towards life, embracing a warmer, more relaxed, and slower-paced lifestyle.
As Citywalk expands beyond first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, to second-and third-tier cities across the county, it brings fresh opportunities for the tourism industry, in such areas as dining, shopping, and accommodation.
Governments in Beijing and Shandong have recognized the potential of Citywalk, incorporating it into their action plans to promote cultural tourism and leisure activities. In Shanghai, public bus lines specially designed have been introduced to elevate the overall Citywalk for participants.
“By slowing down and delving into the narrow alleys, observing the lives of city residents, and immersing oneself in the context of museums and art galleries, one is entitled to embrace the pleasure of life,” said Luo Jun, a cultural tourism enthusiast.
32. What’s the main reason for the popularity of Citywalk among young people?

“It seems to be starting younger and younger,” says Jonathan Pochyly, a psychologist in Chicago.

___38___ Pochyly recommends kids talk with their parents beforehand and come up with a code word to mean “Come pick me up, now!” Pochyly suggests “What time do I have to be home?” as a code phrase. Then Mom and Dad can get the message and pretend you need to be home at once.

“Is that the secret dress you’ve been working on?” Mom asked. “Yes! This is it!” Ella twirled again. “It’s very pretty, Ella. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!” Mom said. She thought of something, and with excitement in her eyes, she said to Ella, “Come on, follow me!”
When they reached the attic (阁楼) , Ella saw something that really surprised her. “A sewing machine!” Ella took a sharp breath. Mom smiled, “Grandma gave this to me, but I was never really interested. I think she’d be happy to know that you have it.” Ella laughed and gave Mom a hug. “I love you, Mom.”
The next day, Ella did get some nice comments from some of the girls, and she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last class of the day. Soon, she’d be going home. What a perfect day, she thought to herself as she swung on the swings.
She wondered what to call her fashion line. Ella Johnson’s Fashions didn’t sound very good. She’d have to give it some thought.
The school bell rang and the class was over. All the kids were moving slowly toward the classroom. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. As she landed, she heard a loud rip (撕裂). “Oh no!” she whispered as she moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped all the way down the back!

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Ella stood still and saw her teacher, Miss Miller, coming to her. With the heat rising to her cheeks, she nervously put her hands behind her. But when Miss Miller reached Ella, she noticed the back of Ella’s dress. Ella lowered the head sadly, “I made the dress myself, but it is ripped.” Gently placing a hand on her shoulder, Miss Miller said, “Your work is beautiful!” Then Miss Miller took off her sweater and helped Ella to pull it on and suggested, “Why not wear this home on the bus?” Ella thanked her heartily and hurried home.
Paragraph 2:
As soon as Ella got home, she ran right into Mom’s room to tell her what had happened. Mom gave her a comforting hug and said, “Don’t worry, sweetheart. Let’s work together to make it come back!” Hearing this, Ella’s sadness began to lift. Then Mom taught Ella how to use the sewing machine to mend the dress. With the instruction of Mom, the repaired dress looked even more beautiful than before. With satisfaction, Ella eagerly put on the dress, twirling around in front of her mother. Her mother couldn’t help but share in her daughter’s happiness.

Parents D. Freshmen

This upsets me to no end because while all the experts are busy debating about which option is best the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information .The end result is that we feel like we can’t focus or that we’re focused on the wrong things , and so we take less action , make less progress , and stay the same when we could be improving .
A. Tolerant
B Doubtful
C. Respectful
D. Supportive
31. When the world is “waving a chair in your face”, you’re advised to_____.
A. wait for a better chance
B. break your old habits
C. make a quick decision
D. ask for clear guidance
D
A. It mainly focuses on urban sightseeing.
B. Social media offer many tempting videos.
C. Busywork schedule limits the choice of people.
D. Conventional tourist landmarks are losing charm.
33. What’s the meaning of underlined word “staggering” in the second paragraph?
A. Astonishing. B. Rewarding. C. Embarrassing. D. Shrinking.
34. Which of the following statements is NOT Citywalk?
A. An immersive route for foreigners to enjoy the alleys in Chengdu.
B. A holiday travel to hurriedly visit crowded landmarks in Shanghai.
C. A free walk including visiting museums and old towns in Qingdao.

35. What have some governments done to promote Citywalk?

“Is that the secret dress you’ve been working on?” Mom asked. “Yes! This is it!” Ella twirled again. “It’s very pretty, Ella. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!” Mom said. She thought of something, and with excitement in her eyes, she said to Ella, “Come on, follow me!”
When they reached the attic (阁楼) , Ella saw something that really surprised her. “A sewing machine!” Ella took a sharp breath. Mom smiled, “Grandma gave this to me, but I was never really interested.
