Not all classrooms are in school buildings. As we have learned, classrooms can be created almost anywhere that teachers and learners are able to connect, in person or virtually.
For Danielle Zelin, who teaches on the island of Mauritius, the classroom is in her home, and all around it. Danielle runs her own school the Language Mood English Club and as a result as freedom to take the curriculum (课程) in many directions, and sometimes that means looking right outside. Danielle’s school started as a club on Saturday mornings, with a focus on storytelling, but she now teaches classes to individuals and groups, mainly in the afternoons and evenings after school.
“I always know I want to teach,” she said, but it wasn’t always clear that English would be her area of expertise (专业知识). As a teenager growing up in Mauritius, she struggled to see the point of reading Shakespeare in her English classes. “That English is old,” she told her mother. “I will not use it in my daily life.” At the time, she much preferred reading French literature.
Years later, though, Danielle saw a performance of The Merchant of Venice, which she had studied in secondary school, and its power became clear to her. She didn’t have to memorize lines, answer questions, or analyze for a test; she just enjoyed the play and the performance.
In a sense, that is the spirit that she carries into her current teaching. Her students arrive after a day of school, often tired, “So my place is more like a fun place to do like an English Adventure—I like to call it that. We do so many different things together, “he said. She and the students sometimes brainstorm things they want to study or discuss, and often her students tell her, “We want to connect to the world.” As a result, they frequently study current events and local issues.

A. She once taught students for free.
B. She used to have classes on weekdays.
C. She focused on storytelling in her class before.
D. She set her classroom only at home years ago.
16. What made Danielle interested in English?
A. Shakespeare’s books. B. Her mother’s influence.
C. A show of The Merchant of Venice. D. Her inner eager to read literature.
17. Why are current issues concerned in Danielle’s class?
A. Danielle wants to carry out her teaching spirits.
B. Danielle wants to make her class adventurous.
C. Her students want to brainstorm.
D. Her students want to contact the world.

In many casual discussions of language and the Internet, it’s common to hear about how “social media language” is ruining language. Some people argue that technology has made us lazy about how we speak and write. And major media such as the BBC and The Daily Mail have all bemoaned the way in which people communicate through technology.
Of course, language does change when it’s used to write messages online. Social media language is an evolution (进化) of language. It’s even the focus of the field of linguistics (语言学) called Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). This field concentrates on the study of interaction brought about by technology like computers. mobile phones and tablets.
People have been making complaints about language being “ruined” for as long as they’ve been writing and speaking. In a TED Talk, linguist John McWhorter shared stories of people being annoyed about language change through the ages. In A.D. 63, for example, a Roman scholar complained that students of Latin were writing in an” artificial language”. In fact, this writing was a new language that would become French!
Today, people are able to communicate rapidly using a wide variety of tools and technologies. Perhaps no linguistic development better indicates changes in the ways we communicate than the popular emoticon (表情符号).
The emoticon “ :)” is a visual performance of a smiley face turned sideways. Although an emoticon may look like a smile, a frown or any other kind of facial expressions, it doesn’t really represent a face. Instead, it’s intended to express a feeling, such as “I’m happy,” or “just joking”.
Words that represent these feelings are what linguists call discourse particles (话语小品词). These are little pieces of language that offer information about the tone of the statement.
Far from ruining language, these examples indicate how people can now communicate complex feelings in a simple, direct manner. This kind of change is perfect for our modern, fast-paced world.
18 What does the underlined word “bemoaned” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Put forward. B. Agree with. C. Checked up. D. Complained about.
19. Why is the TED Talk mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. As an example to support the author’s argument.
B. As evidence of complaints about shared stories.
C. As a proof of language ruined by social media language.
D. As a way to explain language change through the ages.
20. What’s the function of emoticons according to the text?
A. To set the tone. B. To express intentions.
C. To communicate feelings. D. To represent a smiling face.
21. What’s the author’s attitude towards social media language?
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Opposed. D. Doubtful
【答案】18. D 19. A 20. C 21. B

For those who travel to East Africa, a visit would be incomplete without buying beads (珠子), which first arrived there around 1000 AD. From 1480 onwards, the mass export of beads from Europe to East Africa started. By the late 19th century huge quantities of beads were being used as trade goods. Although beads were readily available, the Maasai did not develop an interest in them for quite some time. The Iltalala age-set, who were fighters from 1881 until 1905, were the first to use larger numbers of beads to decorate themselves.
An age-set is an institutionalized (约定俗成的) stage in life which is shared by people that are in the same age-category. The age-sets have names and their members used to paint their bodies to distinguish themselves. When they were prohibited from carrying their weapons in public, the Maasai instead began to wear beaded ornaments (饰物).
Beadwork can tell you several things about the wearer. Specific ornaments and colours indicate whether the person is Maasai or from another ethnic (部落的) group. Different Maasai groups also use certain beads and colour combinations to indicate their connection with others. Finally, a person’s beadwork reflects his or her position in life. The belt of a young woman is different from that of a young man, and an unmarried girl’s earrings are different from those of a married woman.
Within those cultural rules, beadwork fashion changes all the time. Each new generation develops a particular style, including certain materials, colour placements and symbols that unite and identify them. Competing age-sets have often chosen to include symbols of adopted technology. For instance, the Iseuri age-set chose the telegraph pole as their symbol, as a reference to the speed of communication between fighters and their friends. The next major age-set, the Ilkitoip, carried on this theme by adding a large button eye on top of the telegraph pole to symbolise the blue light of a police car.
Tourists are often quite surprised when they find out that Maasai beads are from Europe. They would like African beadwork to be “authentic” (真正的). And it’s true that some ornaments have more cultural meanings than others. Nowadays, Maasai beadwork forms an ever-changing, multi-cultural area of exchange of materials and ideas between Africa and Europe.
22. What can be inferred about the Iltalala age-set?
A. They had a great love of traditional beads.
B. They were the first to import beads from Europe.
C. They made a living by trading in decorative beads.
D. They travelled to Africa with beads around 1000 AD.
23. What is highlighted in Paragraph 3?
A. Beads’ high values. B. Beads’ social functions.
C. Beads’ different patterns. D. Beads’ historical origins
24. What does beadwork, fashion tell us about the age-sets?
A. They have little communication. B. They keep the tradition alive.
C. They are often ahead of technology. D. They are unwilling to follow the fashion.
25. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Beadwork: a newborn European practice
B. Beadwork: a disappearing African tradition
C. Maasai beads: the ideal choice among age-sets
D. Maasai beads: the interplay between Europe and Africa
【答案】22. A 23. B 24. C 25. D

18. What does the underlined word “bemoaned” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Opposed. D. Doubtful

B They were the first to import beads from Europe.
25 What would be the best title for the text?
A. Beadwork: a newborn European practice
B. Beadwork: a disappearing African tradition
C. Maasai beads: the ideal choice among age-sets
D. Maasai beads: the interplay between Europe and Africa
