To her horror, every gum-tree and native plant was being roasted. The mountains, that were once serene, were now a blazing fire. Helplessly she watched, as the fire propelled by gale force winds, spread within minutes, from the forest behind their Aussie farm, and across the parched paddocks, towards them. Embers flew and sparked fires simultaneously across their land. Grandma’s hands shook as she dialed 000, and described the scene, unfolding like a nightmare all around her. A volunteer truck arrived to help, but their efforts were like a drop in a raging ocean. The forest roads were too dangerous to evacuate with the gale force winds. Bravely she rushed down the dirt road towards the dairy shed and the 1800’s first-settlers hut, but it was too late! The fire ignited the ancient wooden buildings and they simultaneously went up like atomic bombs. She was still in disbelief, when suddenly the glowing coral-hot vehicles nearby, exploded. She fled back up to the home, past pine trees and magnificent fig trees that were igniting. Embers, the size of arms, rained down on their porch. She frantically threw them off. The awful, smoky air was suffocating. Yet there was no time to stop. The fire raged and ripped through their entire farm, and for five hours they heroically defended it. Their terrified cattle, horses, sheep, and poultry ran frantically as the fences, cattle yard, and fowl pens combusted. It was agony watching everything they had built, being fiercely engulfed by flames. Together, they bravely hosed their 1930’s weatherboard home, as fire lapped from every surrounding tree like an inferno threatening to engulf them. Suddenly the hoses stopped providing water! “This is surely not possible!?” vexed Grandma. Up the hill, gazing past all the hazy smoke, she saw the two green tanks melting! Painful, they watched as the lifesaving water in the tanks burst forth, onto the ground far away. Daddy dashed to connect up the remaining tank, and they continued to water for a total of five tense hours. The fire burnt many homes in their area. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The weeks that followed proved their resolve. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 The fire burnt many homes in their area. However, due to their efforts, theirs was saved. The region was declared a state of emergency. The sound of cicadas and singing birds had disappeared, and native animals and livestock were lost. Wherever people looked, they found the burnt and destroyed ruins. Daddy and Grandma continued to struggle to do whatever they could to help the others who were still suffering. The weeks that followed proved their resolve. Daddy rescued neighbors, cut off from fallen trees, cleared roads single-handedly and delivered hay. He volunteered tirelessly, into the night for weeks. Meanwhile, Grandma bucketed water to their animals, and put out spot fires with no water-tanks, electricity, or phone lines. They looked out at their farm, now deserted and barren. The animals were utterly exhausted. “Now we must begin the huge cleanup,” they thought, “but where do we even begin?” That was two years ago, and they’ve worked tirelessly ever since. [亮点词汇] ①continue to do sth.继续做某事 ②cut off切断 ③ever since自从 [高分句型] Daddy and Grandma continued to struggle to do whatever they could to help the others who were still suffering. Later, a co-worker took him to visit a basketball court, and he was amazed by the athletic prowess on display. At that moment, Douglas, who had enjoyed playing sports as a child, was determined to create a basketball team and provide greater opportunities for New York City’s Black athletes. He needed to find a place for his team to play. When asking a ballroom owner, William Roach, for permission to use one of the dance floors, Douglas was replied with “you guys will break up my place”. After promising to take on all the financial risk, he finally persuaded Roach to change his mind and called the team “Rens”. However, their ballroom had fewer seats and attracted fewer people than others, so Douglas had to pack the house to generate profits and keep his team alive. They traveled the country playing any opponent that would agree to schedule them, during which they repeatedly faced discrimination and unfair treatment and the players were often banned from hotels and restaurants. No matter the obstacle, the Rens just kept strict practicing. They helped change the game of basketball by focusing on quick passing, which let the players move faster, play a more fluid (流畅) game and keep winning. In 1925, the Rens shocked the world by defeating the Original Celtics, the most dominant team of their day. During the 1932-33 season, the team won 88 straight games, a professional basketball record that remains unbroken. Unfortunately, the Rens disbanded (解散) in 1949. But in time, they were recognized for the important role they played in advancing Black athletes in basketball, ensuring that although the Rens aren't a household name, their story will never be forgotten. 16. What inspired Douglas to establish a basketball team? A. His desire to show his athletic strength. B. A motivation to learn Black culture. C. His intention to earn a good income. D. An experience to a basketball court. 17. Why did the Rens tour the country playing basketball? A. To solve financial problems. B. To improve basketball skills. C. To fight for accommodation. D. To play with excellent players. 18 How did the Rens help change the game of basketball? A. Making competition rules. B. Speeding up the game. C. Defeating the professional team. D. Creating an unbroken record. 19. What can we learn from the story? A. A winner is one with a willing heart. B. A high reputation will work wonders. C. Success makes personal desires satisfied. D. A man owes success to the team support. D 17. A 18. B 19. 根据“Later, a co-worker took him to visit a basketball court, and he was amazed by the athletic prowess on display. At that moment, Douglas, who had enjoyed playing sports as a child, was determined to create a basketball team and provide greater opportunities for New York City’s Black athletes.” 根据“However, their ballroom had fewer seats and attracted fewer people than others, so Douglas had to pack the house to generate profits and keep his team alive. They traveled the country playing…” 故选A。 根据“They helped change the game of basketball by focusing on quick passing,”可知他们通过专注于快速传球来帮助改变篮球比赛。 A。 C Robots have long been drawing inspiration from animals, with the creation of robot dogs or snake-shaped robots. And yet, the field of robotics is far less enthusiastic about the other kind of living things—plants. Barbara Mazzolai, an Italian roboticist owes this to a misconception about plant behavior: that they cannot move or think. “It’s not true at all,” she says. To challenge this view, Dr Mazzolai and her team recently launched a machine called “FiloBot”, a robot based on a climbing species. To survive, a climbing plant must switch between several different behaviors. In forest environments, it must first grow out of the soil and travel along the ground in search of a support to hold onto, such as a nearby tree. Once a support is located, though, the plant fixes itself around the object and then growing towards the light. To choose the best angle to grow upwards, a climbing plant uses its shoots (芽) to receive information about light and gravity. FiloBot has sensors on its main shoot. It can 3D-print its body with plastic and grow at a controllable rate. These functions, researchers found, enabled FiloBot to cross gaps, and find things to attach to. The lack of heavy on-board computing device means that it is light and requires minimal care, while its slow pace means that it doesn’t disturb things around it, making it possible to move through a complex, unseen environment, or monitoring disaster sites. For now, FiloBot is still being tested. Its tendrils (卷须) have not left the laboratory. Still, it has already been employed in deconstructing plant behaviour. For example, it was long assumed that climbing plants find their supports by growing towards shade, though the exact mechanism was unclear. FiloBot could imitate this behaviour by detecting far-red light, which is typical of shaded areas, providing clues to how plants do it. Dr Mazzolai hopes that such projects will inspire other roboticists to take their cues from plants and develop completely new technologies. 20. What does the misconception about plants in the field of robotics focus on? A. Their shapes. B. Their diversity. C. Their body language. D. Their capabilities. 21. What is an advantage of FiloBot? A. It moves quickly. B. It has a solid metal body. C. It adapts to different environment. D. It is attached to huge computers. 22. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The limitations of FiloBot. B. The current use of FiloBot. C. The components of FiloBot. D. The unique feature of FiloBot's design. 23. Which of the following is a suitable title for this text? A. A Role Model for Robotics Research B. A Glimpse into the World of Robotics C. A Plant-Inspired Innovation in Robotics D. A Misunderstanding of the Plant Kingdom 【答案】20. D 21. C 22. B 23. 根据“Barbara Mazzolai, an Italian roboticist owes this to a misconception about plant behavior: that they cannot move or think”可知意大利机器人专家Barbara Mazzolai将此归因于对植物行为误解:植物不能移动或思考,所以在机器人领域对植物的误解集中在它们的能力上。 根据“The lack of heavy on-board computing device means that it is light and requires minimal care, while its slow pace means that it doesn’t disturb things around it, making it possible to move through a complex, unseen environment, or monitoring disaster sites.” 根据“For now, FiloBot is still being tested...Still, it has already been employed in deconstructing plant behaviour”可知第四段主要介绍了FiloBot的当前使用情况。 C。 D One Sunday, we arrived home from a wedding to find our neighbors sitting among a pile of buckets, bottles, and anything they could fill water in. After inquiring, they said they had been waiting for the water truck. In some parts of Johannesburg, South Africa, homes have not had water in their taps for weeks and months on end. Thankfully, my dad’s planning ahead blessed our home with a precious borehole (钻井) that provides us with fresh water every day. Sometimes, because we are off the grid (网格), we are not even aware of what is happening around us, especially with the lack of water-until we see people queuing up, waiting for the water trucks the government sends. Often, the trucks are late or run out of water before reaching our street. In the spirit of Ubuntu, a Zulu (祖鲁语) term meaning humanity that also translates to: “I am because we are”, we encouraged the neighbors to collect their water from our borehole. We opened the gate and connected the pipe. Very quickly, the word spread, and old and young gathered with various-sized containers to collect this life-giving liquid. There was much laughter and chatter, along with some singing as bucket after bucket was filled. It was heartwarming to watch the young help the elderly carry their water home before returning for their own buckets. And as long as our family’s borehole is working, we practice Ubuntu. “It is not safe to let strangers onto your property,” some say. But humanity drives us to take the risk because the burden is lessened when shared. It is what we need for our collective survival. A simple act of sharing water has spread hope in the community that we can overcome the difficulties we face together. 24. What did the author find when arriving home? A. Plastic bottles piled up on the road. B. Neighbors were short of water. C. Water trucks were out of service. D. Public facilities were damaged. 25. What is the father like according to paragraph 2? A. Forward-looking. B. Hard-working. C. Well-educated. D. Self-confident. 26. Which of the following best interprets the spirit of Ubuntu? A. One good turn deserves another. B. A man can do no more than he can. C. Hardship makes a man wise, not rich. D. We are stronger when standing together. 27. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Property. B. Humanity. C. Risk. D. Burden. B 25. A 26. D 27. 根据“After inquiring, they said they had been waiting for the water truck. In some parts of Johannesburg, South Africa, homes have not had water in their taps for weeks and months on end.” 根据“Thankfully, my dad’s planning ahead blessed our home with a precious borehole (钻井) that provides us with fresh water every day.” 故选A。 根据“we encouraged the neighbors to collect their water from our borehole...It was heartwarming to watch the young help the elderly carry their water home before returning for their own buckets”以及“A simple act of sharing water has spread hope in the community that we can overcome the difficulties we face together.” 根据“But humanity drives us to take the risk because the burden is lessened when shared. It is what we need for our collective survival.” (Labor Creates a Better Life) ”的系列劳动实践活动。 ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二节 读后续写(25分) 2. Everywhere she looked, she saw a sea of fire. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 二、语言运用:本大题共15空,每空2分,共计20分。 Every year on March 14, students around the world put down their textbooks and pick up slices of pie to celebrate a unique and delicious holiday—Pi(π) Day. Thinking of the first 3 digits (数位) of pi (3.14), you can quickly work out ___3___ March 14 was chosen as the date for Pi Day. In 2019, UNESCO set the dayas the International Day of Mathematics to celebrate the beauty of math and stress the essential role it plays in all aspects of our lives. Pi Day was first celebrated in the US in 1988 at San Francisco’s Exploratorium, a museum of science and technology which ___4___ (encourage) visitors to be hands-on. During the first celebration, Exploratorium’s employees marched around one of the circular ___5___ (space) of the museum because pi is the rate of a circle’s circumference (周长) to its diameter. As a celebration of the mathematical constant pi, Pi Day in China is to honor Zu Chongzhi (429—500 AD), a Chinese mathematician who calculated pi as being ___6___ 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, a record in accuracy ___7___ was not surpassed for over 800 years. Pi Day is celebrated in ___8___ (variety) ways across the world. In the US, schools usually hold activities related to pie, such as pie-eating contests or ___9___ (simple) throwing pies toward each other. “In Germany, the celebration of Pi Daytakes on a cultural twist,” said a 15-year-old German girl. Schools inspire students ___10___ (express) their artistic side through pi-related art displays. These range from pi-inspired paintings to mathematical sculptures, training creativity within the field of mathematics. She even built a 3-dimensional cityscape with Lego for Pi Day, ___11___ (use) different colored blocks to represent each digit of pi. So, this year’s Pi Day was no different. Pies ___12___ (eat) up and numbers rolled as students across the globe came together yet again to honor the charm of pi and math as a whole. A Costa Rica is full of unique animals found nowhere else on Earth. C. To analyze. D. To report. B After moving to the United States in 1901, 19-year-old Bob Douglas found a job as a doorman in New York. A His desire to show his athletic strength. B. A motivation to learn Black culture. C. His intention to earn a good income. D. An experience to a basketball court. 17. Why did the Rens tour the country playing basketball? A. To solve financial problems. B. To improve basketball skills. C. To fight for accommodation. D. To play with excellent players. 18. How did the Rens help change the game of basketball? C Robots have long been drawing inspiration from animals, with the creation of robot dogs or snake-shaped robots. 20 What does the misconception about plants in the field of robotics focus on? A. Their shapes. B. Their diversity. C. Their body language. D. Their capabilities. 21. What is an advantage of FiloBot? A. It moves quickly. B. It has a solid metal body. C. It adapts to different environment. D. It is attached to huge computers. 22 What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A Misunderstanding of the Plant Kingdom D One Sunday, we arrived home from a wedding to find our neighbors sitting among a pile of buckets, bottles, and anything they could fill water in. 25 What is the father like according to paragraph 2? A. Forward-looking. B. Hard-working. C. Well-educated. D. Self-confident. 26. Which of the following best interprets the spirit of Ubuntu? A. One good turn deserves another. B. A man can do no more than he can. C. Hardship makes a man wise not rich. D. We are stronger when standing together. 27. What does the underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Property. B. Humanity. C. Risk. D. Burden.
