My hometown Nanjing is in the eastern part of China. As the capital of Jiangsu, it is a modern and busy city. And it is one of the cities with the longest history in China. With the development of the economy (经济), it has changed a lot in the past few years.
For one thing, people took tramcars (有轨电车) to go out in the past. But now many people choose to take a subway because of its convenience (便捷). What’s more, taking a taxi becomes very popular. It has an app on the phone, and some people use it to call a taxi. It may be much cheaper.
Besides, the building is different from the past. In the past, the tallest building in Nanjing was Jinling Hotel. It had 37 floors. At that time, the tallest building is Zifeng Tower. It has 78 floors. Different from the past, you can see tall buildings everywhere in Nanjing.
As for the environment, in the 1980s and before, Nanjing was full of trees, people paid little attention to the importance of plants and fresh air. Plants were cut down and the air got worse. Now, to improve the living place, people take all actions to grow plants and cut down pollution. The environment is getting better now.
1.What is Nanjing like?
2.How many kinds of transportation (交通) are mentioned (提及) in Paragraph 2?
3.How do young people call a taxi?
4.Is Jinling Hotel the tallest building in Nanjing?
5.Why is the environment of Nanjing getting better now?
(23-24八年级上·重庆沙坪坝·期中)One evening, a young man walked on the beach. He turned back to see the footsteps (脚印) he left in the sand, but the water washed away his footsteps in the sand. When he went on walking, he saw an old woman sitting by a fire.
He walked up to the old woman and asked, “Where do you come from? I didn’t see you here a minute ago.” The old woman didn’t answer his question but said, “Sit with me, my child. I have something to show you.”
As the young man sat down next to the fire, the old woman gave him a book. He turned the pages of the book one by one and was surprised to find out they told the story of his life, from the early days of childhood to now. But when he turned to the next page, he found there was nothing. And there was also nothing in the rest of the pages in the book.
“Does this mean my life ends tonight?” he asked. At that time, the old woman tore (撕掉) the pages that had words out of the book and threw them in the fire.
“No, my child. It means tonight your life begins,” she said, “just as the water washed away your footsteps in the sand, your past goes away forever. What you truly have is here and now. My child, live each minute to the fullest.”
Hearing the old woman’s words, the young man thought of his failure (失败) yesterday. But at that time, the sun rose from the sea. He looked at the sun and thought...
1.Did the water wash away the young man’s footsteps in the sand?
2.Where did the old woman throw the pages that had words?
3.What did the old woman want to tell the young man?

People often think doing nothing is quite easy, but sometimes it can be very hard. Many of us want to help wildlife when they appear to be in trouble, but in some cases, we need to redirect these instincts (直觉) .
Generally, the best thing to do is leave the animal alone. This protects both you and the animal.
Young wildlife usually are not orphaned, even if (即便) a parent can’t be seen. For example, baby birds often leave the nest before they can fly, hopping around on the ground for days with the parents sometimes elsewhere getting food.
By trying to help wildlife, you might really be hurting them. A man in Georgia saw a manatee out of the water. Worried it was stuck (被困住) , the man pushed the manatee back into the water. Scientists said the manatee was very likely just sunbathing on a warm December day.
Your “help” could also end up hurting you. The man in Georgia was fine, but even people trained in manatee rescues (救援) sometimes get injured (受伤的) . Manatees may look slow and too large to cause injury, but a lot of strength and energy is hidden within their thick hide (皮) .
Finally, wild animals are hardier than we think. A recent car advertisement describes a couple “rescuing” a bird from cold weather and driving it south. This type of activity is illegal (违法的) and can be dangerous for the humans and the animals.
Sometimes, though, wildlife certainly needs our help. You’ll know a wild animal needs help if it has a broken limb, is bleeding (流血) , has a dead parent nearby, or is hopelessly caught in some man-made object.
If that’s the case, get in touch with a licensed (有执照的) wildlife rehabilitator. They are trained to care for wildlife. They can tell you what steps can be taken until help arrives. Not only that, but if they are truly in need, many animals need expert attention right away.
Wildlife rehabilitator is the answer for an injured animal. But, in general, the best bet for your safety, and that of the animal involved, is to leave wildlife alone, whenever possible, keeping them truly wild.
1.Is it quite easy for people to do nothing, according to the writer?
2.What does the writer want to tell us by showing the examples of manatees?
3.How can we help an injured animal correctly, according to the writer?
4.The writer thinks we should keep wildlife truly wild. Do you agree? Why or why not? List at least two reasons.

I am Daisy Jones. At about 8: 30 this morning, I was walking on Ocean Road when a boy on a bike passed me quickly. The road was empty (空的) at that time so the boy kept riding in the middle.
Suddenly a car appeared. It passed me, then followed the boy for a while. It tried to pass the boy several times but failed. The driver began to sound the horn (鸣笛). However, it seemed that the boy didn’t hear it. He was probably listening to music with earplugs (耳塞)! That was terrible.
Suddenly the car speeded up and passed the boy. Unluckily it hit the boy. The boy fell off his bike onto the road. But the car did not stop. It continued on its way. I believe the driver knew he had hit the boy because I saw him look back from the window.
The car was quite old. It was a red Ford Escort. But its number plate (车牌) was so dirty that I couldn’t see its number. The driver was a man with long hair. He wasn’t old but I can’t guess his age.
I ran to the boy and saw he was badly hurt. So I called the police at once. They soon arrived. The boy was sent to the hospital at once. I told a police officer what I had seen. She asked me to make a statement (陈述) at the police station.
1.Where did the accident happen?
2.What did the driver begin to do after failing to pass the boy?
3.Why couldn’t Daisy get the car number?
4.What did the driver look like?
5.How was the boy after the accident?

Dear Nancy,
You asked about places to go and things to do in my town. Let me tell you now.
The Downtown Plaza is always fun. It’s a shopping area in the oldest part of town. There are some good stores and restaurants there. For example, Andrea’s Boutique is in Downtown Plaza. It’s a fun place to shop, and it has the best quality clothes.
My favorite restaurant in town is Nick’s Cafe. It is near my house. It’s cheap and its hamburgers are great. I like Dragon City Restaurant, too. You can eat wonderful noodles there and the beef noodles are the most delicious! You must try the dumplings, too! But the dumplings are more expensive than Nick’s.
The Suburb Cinema is the best movie theater. It has the biggest screen and the most comfortable seats. The Del Ray Complex is a good place to go to the movies, too. It doesn’t have the newest movies, but the tickets are cheaper.
Anyway, there are lots of things to do and see here. Come for a visit soon!
Love,
Kate

China gets more and more popular with people from many foreign countries. Many foreigners(外国人)now think of China if they want to move to other countries. Here is a study that found out what they thought to be the most wonderful cities in China.
No. 1 of the “top ten best cities to live in China” is Shanghai. It’s not surprising at all, is it? Most foreigners always find Shanghai friendly, beautiful and full of interesting things to see and do. Foreigners can find a lot of jobs here. But it’s quite expensive to live in Shanghai.
No. 2 is Beijing. Though the weather there is not good, Beijing is China’s political, cultural and educational center(政治、文化和教育中心). There are many big places of interest, like the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven. It’s quite easy to live in Beijing. You can easily get almost everything you need here.
What is No. 3 city? It’s Shenzhen. It’s a modern(现代的)city where many foreigners do business(生意).
If you like a more relaxing lifestyle, you can think about somewhere like Hangzhou, Suzhou or Kunming. If you like a sea lifestyle, Xiamen or Qingdao would be great. They are all on the list of top ten, too. What’s more, Nanjing and Tianjin are also on the top 10. Which city do you like?

Fun in the run
The marathon (马拉松) is very popular all over the world. In China, for the first six months of this year, there were 133 marathons across the country.
Teenagers also join marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old boy from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Suqian Marathon held on April 2. For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He runs about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week before the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school, a marathon is about a runner’s endurance(耐力) and psychological quality (心理素质),” he said.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up(放弃). “In long-distance running, the only opponent (对手) you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Except for one’s willpower (意志力), kindness from the people around also plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi joined a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people around cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, ‘keep it up’, it meant a lot to me and I was encouraged to keep going to the end,” Li said.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused (专注的) on the final goal, not the suffering (痛苦) along the way. “Our life is also a marathon,” Li said.
1.How many marathons were there in the first six months of this year in China?
2.How long does Xu Qian run each week to get ready for the race?
3.According to Xu Qian, who do you have to beat in long-distance running?

A singer once went to a master(大师). He wanted to be better at singing than others. He sat in front of the master and started telling him why he visited. The master listened quietly to the singer.
The master then told the singer to go to the garden behind his house. There a rose plant and a tall tree were growing side by side. He told the singer, “They are your teachers. They can teach you what you want to learn.”
The singer went into the garden, and saw the two plants. He thought hard but could not understand what he could learn from them. He had to go back to the master and asked, “What do you mean, master? I am not able to understand what and how these plants will teach me.”
The master himself took the singer to the plants and explained, “This tree has been next to the rose plant for ten years. Never once has it wanted to become a rose plant. Similarly, the rose plant has never wanted to become a tree. If man were the tree, he would compare himself with the rose and feel jealous(嫉妒的) at its beauty. The 19th Asian Games are going on in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Players from all over the world play against each other. However, as we say in China: “Friendship first, competition second.” How can players have both? Let’s share two students’ ideas about it.
When I was little, I was in a swimming club with my best friend. One day, our city’s swimming team came to pick young swimmers. She got in but I didn’t. I felt that she was not my “best friend” any more. I left the club and didn’t say goodbye. I tried to forget all about her. Years later, I heard that she didn’t join the city’s team only because of me. Surprised, I called her. She said, “I’ve waited for this call for too long.” Then, we were back to be friends again. Communication (交流) is also important in sports world.

Alice looked at the house for a minute or two and wondered what to do.
Suddenly a footman (男仆) with the face of a fish ran out of the woods. She knew he was a footman because he was wearing a footman’s uniform.
He had a big envelope (信封) under his arm. He knocked on the door of the house and another footman with the face of a frog opened it.
The fish-footman gave the frog-footman the envelope and said in a very serious voice.
“For the Duchess. An invitation from the Queen to play croquet (槌球).”
The frog footman repeated in a serious voice:
“From the Queen. An invitation to the Duchess (公爵夫人) to play croquet.”
They looked very silly. Alice wanted to laugh.

“I didn’t know that Cheshire cats grinned. In fact, I didn’t know that cats could grin.”
“Well, they can. And most of them do!” the Duchess said.

Young wildlife usually are not orphaned, even if (即便) a parent can’t be seen. For example, baby birds often leave the nest before they can fly, hopping around on the ground for days with the parents sometimes elsewhere getting food.

【答案】1.No, it isn’t. 2.By trying to help wildlife, we might really be hurting them and the “help” could also end up hurting us. /Helping wildlife might end up hurting both the animals and us. 3.By getting in touch with a (licensed) wildlife rehabilitator. 4.I agree that we should keep wildlife truly wild because we might hurt them when we try to help them (because we don’t know much about them). Also, we might hurt ourselves when we are trying to help. Animals are hardier than we think.

Dear Nancy,
You asked about places to go and things to do in my town.

A singer once went to a master(大师). He wanted to be better at singing than others. He sat in front of the master and started telling him why he visited. The master listened quietly to the singer.

Weng Youran, 15, Hangzhou Entel Foreign Language School, Zhejiang
You are the best player in a long jump competition. The player in second place made mistakes(错误) in the first two jumps. Now, it’s his or her jump. And you can teach him or her not to make the same mistakes. Would you do it? Most people would say no because they want to win. But during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, the number one player, Luz Long from Germany did so. He showed the second-place player Jesse Owens from the US the right place to jump.
When the fish-footman left, Alice opened the door and went in.
Alice found herself in a big kitchen. The Duchess was sitting in the middle of it. She was holding a crying baby. The cook was standing next to the fire. She was stirring a pan of soup. Alice sneezed (打喷嚏).
“There’s too much pepper (胡椒粉) in that soup,” she said to herself.
It was true. Both the Duchess and the baby were sneezing, too.
A big cat was sitting on the floor near the fire. It was grinning (咧嘴笑) from ear to ear.
“Er-excuse me,” Alice said to the Duchess. “Why is your cat grinning?” “Because it’s a Cheshire Cat,” the Duchess replied. “Pig!”
She said the last word very loudly and Alice jumped. But the Duchess wasn’t speaking to her. She was speaking to the crying baby. Alice decided to continue the conversation.
“I didn’t know that Cheshire cats grinned. In fact, I didn’t know that cats could grin.”
“Well, they can. And most of them do!” the Duchess said.
Suddenly she threw the baby at Alice.
The baby was difficult to hold because it was a strange shape.
Alice looked at the baby again, more carefully. It was a pig.
