How many roles are there in the Beijing Opera? What are they?
What do different colors on the actors’ faces symbolize?
Peking Opera has a history of more than 200 years. As the national opera of China, it has been widely enjoyed throughout the country. Foreign guests are also showing great interest in this unique art form nowadays.
Peking Opera
Peking Opera is a synthesis (综合体) of music, dance, martial art and acrobatics. Actors and actresses have to master four basic performance techniques: chang (singing), nian (speaking), zuo (acting) and da (artistic fighting), and the methods must conform to the different roles. There are four roles in Peking Opera: sheng (the male roles), dan (the female roles), jing (painted-face roles), and chou (comedic roles). Every role has its own special facial makeup and costumes (服装).
Many foreigners are often fascinated with the facial makeup in Peking Opera. Different colors on the actors’ faces may symbolize different personalities, characteristics, and even the fates of their roles.
