A passport is a travel document that gives a person permission to depart from and then reenter a country. A country issues passports to its own citizens. Generally, a government issues three types of passports: first, diplomatic passports, for people going abroad on important government duties; second, official passports, for other government personnel; and third, regular passports, for people traveling overseas for personal affairs.
Passports and Visas
A visa is an endorsement that government officials stamp in a passport. It shows the passport is valid. The visa proves that the traveler’s passport has been examined and approved. Immigration officers then permit a traveler to enter the country. A government that does not want a certain person to enter the country may refuse to grant that person a visa.
