A Overweight since her teens,Katherine Jackson lost 35 pounds in her late teens but put it all back on when she had her son.She says it was because of a sweet tooth.“I could eat a pint of ice cream in one sitting and not even think about it,” the married mother of four remembers. She knew she had to do something, but the death of her best friend from complications (并发症) related to bariatric surgery (肥胖外科手术) caused her to stay away from the help she needed. “It took me five years to realize I can't live a life like this,” Jackson says of finally deciding to have bariatric surgery in 2012.“My kids love the new me” Jackson says.“And,my youngest, who is 8 and a little overweight, has been encouraged by me.We walk the track when it is warm as a family outing.” She adds,“I knew I had to do something about my health because I had to be around for them and watch them grow and experience life.” After a lifetime of junk food, sweets and outofcontrol amounts,Jackson had to learn a new way of eating. Now,she starts the day with a breakfast of hardboiled eggs for the protein (蛋白质).Lunch usually is a salad and dinner is a protein shake. She walks two to three miles at least a few times a week, does Zumba twice a week and rides her bike for a halfhour three times a week. “I wish I'd been more concerned about my weight when I was younger,” Jackson says.“I wish it hadn't gotten to this point. But I'm lucky my life is so much better now.” 1.When did Jackson begin to put back on her weight? A.After she had her son. B.After she was married. C.When she was a teenager. D.When she was in her twenties. 根据第一段中的“Overweight since her teens ...put it all back on when she had her son.” A 2.What made Jackson avoid bariatric surgery at first? A.Her best friend's passing away. B.The good taste of ice cream. C.Her kids' deep love for her. D.The warm outing as a family. 根据第二段中的“the death of her best friend from complications (并发症) related to bariatric surgery (肥胖外科手术) caused her to stay away from the help she needed”可知,她最好的朋友因为肥胖外科手术并发症而去世这件事使Katherine Jackson回避了手术,故选A。 答案 A 3.Which of the following is one reason for Jackson's dropping pounds? A.Changing previous eating habits. B.Taking more exercise with a coach. C.Receiving several operations. D.Riding a bike to work every day. 根据第四段第一句话中的“Jackson had to learn a new way of eating”可知,为了减肥,Jackson不得不学会一种新的饮食习惯,故选A。 答案 A B Even though one out of three American children live within a mile of their school, almost not half of those students often bike or walk to class, scientists report. Children who live in the South,in country areas,or who have collegeeducated parents, are among those least likely to bike or walk to school, notes the report, which is published in the July issue (期号) of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Sarah Martin and her workmates at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studied materials from more than 7,000 children between 9 and 15 years of age. They found that almost 35 percent of the children lived within one mile of their schools.Children between 11 and 13 years old were more likely to walk or bike than 9yearolds.Children whose parents had a high school education were more likely to bike or walk than children with collegeeducated parents. “The majority of children are missing an opportunity to increase daily physical activity,” Martin said in a prepared statement. According to the CDC,nearly one in five (18.8 percent) children between 6 and 11 years old are overweight.Increased daily physical activity is one of the methods the CDC gives to help deal with obesity (肥胖) in children. Martin said that there are all kinds of reasons why children in city areas might be more likely to bike or walk. They said the fact is that schools may be in mixeduse neighborhoods where it is more possible to bike or walk, compared with other places where there may be fewer safe sidewalks. 4.Sarah Martin and her workmates found that________. A.younger children would like to bike or walk to school B.older children are much stronger than the younger children C.kids whose parents received less education walk more D.some children are becoming much lazier than others C 5.According to the CDC,many children are overweight because they________. A.eat too much every day B.have unhealthy meals C.are too busy to travel D.take less physical activity D 6.From the passage,we can infer that________. A.children should receive a better education B.some children don't bike or walk because there are fewer safe sidewalks C.it is unnecessary for children to walk to school D.children in country areas have more chance to bike or walk than those in cities B 7.What section of a newspaper may this passage be taken from? A.Education. B.Culture. C.Sports. D.Health. D C For all the dinner tables,a glass of milk seems to be a constant,at least it was when I was growing up.It was widely believed that milk was integral (不可或缺的) in building strong bones and teeth. There's no doubt that dairy products (乳制品),and milk in particular, are high in protein and calcium, and most milk products are supplemented (补充) with Vitamin D and Vitamin A. While it's well known that our bones need calcium, some studies suggest that high calcium intake doesn't necessarily lower a person's risk for fractures (骨折).A Harvard study found that people who drank two or more glasses of milk had no greater protection from breaking a bone than those who drank a glass or less a week. There's no doubt that we need calcium. Some antidairy supporters claim that dairy can lead to heart disease.Much of this claim is based on high fat and high dairy products, like cheeses and creams, which may indeed contribute to cardiovascular (心血管的) problems. Some studies have linked high milk intakes with a risk of prostate cancer;this seems to be caused by highfat dairy products, not dairy in general. Although milk is always regarded as one of the most important things we need for our bones, yet least promoted factors involved in strengthening bones.Perhaps we should think of dairy as less like a nutrient and more like a food.If you like it,eat it.If not, find some_others .Because some claims may not be completely true, when I eat a cream,I'm not thinking about calcium, protein,or any such thing.I'm thinking delicious. 8.Which of the following is TRUE about the milk and fractures? A.The more milk you drink, the more risk for fractures you might be. B.The more milk you drink, the less risk for fractures you might be. C.The less milk you drink, the less risk for fractures you might be. D.There is no link between them. 根据第二段中的“...some studies suggest that high calcium intake doesn't necessarily lower a person's risk for fractures (骨折).” D 9.Some antidairy supporters claim that dairy can lead to the following EXCEPT________. A.cardiovascular problems B.heart disease C.prostate cancer D.stomach cancer D 10.The underlined words “some others” in the last paragraph refer to “________”. A.dairy products B.milk C.food D.cream 根据前面的两个句子“Perhaps we should think of dairy as less like a nutrient and more like a food.If you like it,eat it.” C 11.We can learn from the text that________. A.all the claims are not completely true B.high milk intake can lead to cancer C.it's necessary for you to reduce milk intake D.give up milk for your health 根据最后一段最后一句“Because some claims may not be completely true ...” A项中的all not=not all表示部分否定,意为“并非所有的”。 答案 A D Is carrying a few extra pounds into your senior years healthy?Advice has been mixed. Now,two studies published this month attempt to better define the ideal weight for fitness and longevity for adults over age 60. The main point is that you don't need to worry about being slightly overweight,as long as that extra weight is maintained at a consistent level. However, being very overweight is detrimental to health, and exercising to lose body fat and to gain muscle mass is always beneficial. Determining the ideal weight for older people has been a pursuit, with researchers looking for what weight is not too thin, but not too fat.Studies have suggested that being slightly overweight can be protective. For example,a 2001 study by researchers at Yale University found that moderately overweight senior adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27—two points higher than the BMI of 25 that defines being overweight—lived longer than seniors who were either thinner or heavier. There's a fine line here, though, because carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases. And,according to the researchers behind the two new studies, the general public has misinterpreted the Yale findings to mean that being very overweight is healthy. One new study, published this month in the American Journal of Epidemiology by researchers at the Ohio State University in Columbus, found that seniors who maintained a stable, slightly overweight status survived most probably over the 16 years surveyed. Those seniors who had a socalled healthy weight going into the study (a BMI between 18.5 and 25) and who gained weight, but stayed below BMI 25,had a slight possibility of surviving over the study period. People in the obese group, with a BMI higher than 35 and who continued to gain weight, faced the worst among all the groups in the study. But nexttolast were normal-weight people who lost weight, but this was likely because they became sick, the researchers said. The second study, appearing this month in the journal Obesity, was conducted by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in WinstonSalem,N.C.,and supports intentional weight loss among senior adults.Whether weight loss is beneficial has been debated because of this concept that being overweight is protective. In short, the researchers found that physical activity and weight loss for overweight and obese adults resulted in lower cardiovascular (心血管的) disease risk and improved mobility. This finding supports previous studies demonstrating that exercise builds muscle and bone strength, improves balance and coordination, prevents falls and enables seniors to enjoy a more active lifestyle, they said. Hui Zheng of Ohio State, the lead author of first study, said that the negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people. 12.The underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. A.important B.fundamental C.harmful D.helpful C 13.As for the 2001 study, the general public wrongly think that________. A.it is healthy and protective for people to be very overweight B.people with a BMI of 27 or more are classified as overweight C.senior adults with a BMI of 27 lived longer than those either thinner or heavier D.carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases 根据第四段最后一句中的the general public has misinterpreted the Yale findings to mean that being very overweight is healthy可知。 答案 A 14.What can we learn from the two new studies? A.It's difficult for seniors who have a socalled healthy weight to have a long lifespan. B.It's most dangerous for normalweight people to continue to lose weight. C.The two studies are based on and in agreement with previous studies. D.The second one recommends overweight and obese adults work out and lose weight. 根据倒数第三段第一句“The second study...supports intentional weight loss among senior adults.” 答案 D 15.What does the passage mainly tell us? A.The negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people. B.Being slightly overweight may bring some health benefits for seniors. C.It is harmless for overweight young people to continue to gain weight. D.People at a healthy weight should intentionally put on extra weight. The way to lift up your mood Everyone has periods in their lives when everything seems very hard, there's nobody to talk to and the mood is just getting worse and worse. __16__ The first thing you should try is socializing and thinking positively. It's very hard, because usually when we feel sad we lock ourselves at home and try to think about all the bad things we have. But if you try to force yourself and call a friend for a cup of coffee, the chances are that you may change your mood into better.Just try to avoid bad thoughts. __17__ 18__ It could be something you wanted for a long time—a short trip,a coat,a ring or anything that could lift up your mood.It doesn't have to be costly, but it has to be good to yourself. In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of land behind his house.Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful—they still performed their fantastic magic. Every day,his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers, the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they walk on the flowers and damage them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough sun and water to nourish (滋养) them.Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as those remarkable flowers provided. With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became even more concerned about his remarkable flowers. He was determined to protect the flowers. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ However, the flowers seemed to fade day by day,so the man went everywhere for help. ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] He was determined to protect the flowers. So he built a high wall around them. Not feeling satisfied,he even set up rules as to who could enter the garden, how they must enter, and what they must follow while they were there. As a result, children were forbidden to enter and appreciate the flowers as before. For his part,he continued to see to it that his treasure received enough sunlight and water so that the flowers continued to perform their wonderful magic. However, the flowers seemed to fade day by day,so the man went everywhere for help.He visited every expert, only to find his efforts in vain.He felt on pins and needles, seeing his beloved flowers dying. One evening,he was wandering on the street aimlessly when he suddenly noticed the flower woman on the same spot where he had met her, giving away her amazing flowers. It finally dawned on him that the flowers are gifts not possessions and that only by sharing can the magic remain and last.
