“He must be a poor artist,” thought Miss Martha, a young single lady who had a bakery store. A customer attracted her attention recently. He spoke English with a strong German accent. His old clothes were worn in places. Red, brown or yellow painting marks were often seen on his fingers. But he looked tidy, with very good manners.
Every time he bought two loaves of old bread. Fresh bread was two dollars a loaf while old ones were fifty cents for two. Never did he call for anything but old bread.
Genius often had to suffer before being famous. Her heart ached and decided to add something good for him to eat. But she didn't want to tell him face to face. She knew the pride of artists.
One day the customer came in as usual. While Miss Martha was reaching for loaves, there was a fire engine making great noise outside. The customer hurried to the door and took a look, as anyone would. “It's the right moment”, Miss Martha knew clearly. She caught the chance and quickly put a large amount of butter into the loaves to do him a pleasant favour.
All day she was imagining the scene when he discovered her little secret. Would he think of the hands that put the butter? Would he invite her to look at his artwork?
The other day in the bakery, the man came, not alone this time, with his face red and hair terribly messy. He raised his forefinger and pointed it angrily at Miss Martha. “Stupid!” he shouted loudly, “You have damaged it. You are poking your nose into my business!”
The other man that came with him said, “That's Blumberger, our engineer. He’s been working hard for three months drawing a plan for a new city hall. He always makes his drawing in pencil first. When it’s done, he rubs out the pencil lines with handfuls of old bread. That’s better than using a rubber. Well, until today! The butter! Now Blumberger’s plan isn’t good for anything.”

①In 2023, a short film, Escape from the British Museum, received over 400 million views on Douyin, winning high praise online. Today, let’s take a look behind the scene.
②In the film, there were only two main characters. A female vlogger played the role of an ancient Chinese jade teapot, while her male partner acted as a reporter. It told us a story of a jade teapot coming to life and trying to run away from the British Museum to make its way back home.
③The idea of the story didn’t come by accident. In fact, in the last couple years, a growing number of Chinese Internet users called for more attention on cultural treasures in the British Museum. It was reported that more than 2,000 priceless works of art were missing, stolen or damaged in the British Museum over recent years. Whenever such news came out, it caught many people’s eyes, including the two vloggers. Since they were faithful fans of Chinese traditional culture as well, they decided to make a short film about Chinese cultural treasures abroad.
④They spent three months creating the main plot of the videos and decided to make the treasures talk like human beings. The idea worked. When the film was finished and posted online, it soon became a big hit (成功). Audience even dropped tears when they saw the jade teapot express and cry excitedly after seeing giant pandas, visiting old friends and watching the national flag raising ceremony (仪式) on Tiananmen Square. Moments like these really touched the heart of the audience. It gave them a lively experience on the happiness of cultural treasures returning home instead of just reminding the importance of bringing those treasures back.
⑤The official (官方的) media Global Times strongly recommended the short film for it was sending a “powerful message” to the world. Besides, CCTV gave it an excellent review saying “We are very pleased to see Chinese young people show great interest in our own history and tradition.”
⑥Art comes from life. The success of the film is probably the perfect sign to show that Chinese people are always looking forward to the return of their cultural treasures, the return of their pride and respect.

During the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, there were a lot of reports about the environmental actions taken. Athletes (运动员) slept on beds made from recycled cardboard. What's more, 5000 medals were produced out of old electrical appliances such as smartphones and laptops. Over 90% of Japanese cities, towns and villages joined in the activity. Finally, eighty tons of old electrical appliances were collected to make it happen.
As for the 2024 Olympics in Paris coming next week, new environmental plans are put into practice and recycling is still an important one of them. According to a report, people in the Olympic swimming centre will sit on chairs made of plastic recycled from local waste. This decision is made by the recycling company Lemon Tri and engineering company Le Pavé because the country is short of unused new materials (材料) to make new seats. At the same time, however, it provides them a chance to be part of the recycling plan for Paris 2024.
“It not only helps the Olympic Games,” says Augustin, leader of Lemon Tri, “but also encourages more people to live a greener life. We tell children to come and put their bottle caps in the waste containers, then tomorrow they'll be in the seats of the Olympic swimming centre.” The plastic waste collection for Paris 2024 is greatly supported by local schools. Because of their effort, over five million coloured bottle caps are recycled. And around 11,000 seats are made from those recycled materials.
The Olympic Games organizers promise to make Paris 2024 the greenest Olympic Games. Both London 2012 and Rio 2016 had given out around 3.5 million tons of carbon footprint (碳排放). For improvement, Paris 2024 has set a goal of 1.5 million tons. To achieve it, many experienced researchers are invited by the organizers. And now it seems that they have already developed methods to better control and reduce the carbon footprint of Paris 2024. For example, there will be no air- conditioner in the Olympic Village, home for all the athletes.
Their environmental plans are challenging but possible. With all the hard work above, it is believed that the Paris 2024 will achieve all the goals and become a great example for future Olympic Games.
34. According to the passage, if you are an athlete in Paris 2024, you will probably ________.
A. sleep on a bed made from recycled cardboard. B. get a gold medal produced out of smartphones.
C. sit on a chair made from recycled bottle caps. D. live in a cool house with air- conditioner on.
35. What can you infer (推断) about Paris 2024 according to the passage?
A. A short of unused new materials is one of the reasons for their recycling.
B. The recycling plan for Paris 2024 is made by Lemon Tri and Le Pavé.
C. Over 90% of the local schools took part in the waste collection activity.
D. More money is spent to reduce the carbon footprint than London and Rio.
36. How does the writer mainly develop the article?
A. By telling stories. B. By showing facts.
C. By making comparisons. D. By following the order of time.
37. What is the author's attitude towards the plans for Paris 2024?
A. Surprised. B. Worried. C. Favourable. D. Unclear.

A. Surprised. B. Worried. C. Favourable. D. Unclear.
