Running regularly helps you keep fit. That’s why millions of people run several days a week and regularly take part in races. While running, some runners can do something good for others. They collect money for their run and give it to a charity Some charity runners run a full marathon (马拉松) dressed in colorful clothes to collect more money for their charity.
Travis Snyder from the US had been thinking for some time about an idea of running for fun. Professional runners and other people could run together. In 2012 he organized the first “Color Run—The happiest 5K (kilometer) on the earth”. It started with six thousand runners in Phoenix, Arizona, and is now held every year in many cities around the world, with millions of runners.
The idea is simple: you start wearing something white, and at every kilometer people spray and paint you in different colors: 1K is yellow, 2K is blue, 3K is green, 4K is pink, and 5K is brown.
Why do people go on a Color Run? Because “it’s healthy, fun and colorful”, as one runner Pierre Hoffman said.

In 2014, a university student went with friends for a birthday celebration to Beijing Zoo. Little did he know that a chance turning up at the aquarium (水族馆) there would excite a lifelong passion. As Xu Yitang looked at the coral (珊瑚) in the tank, a sense of wonder washed over him.
After he first saw coral at the aquarium, he often went to the local market to learn about coral farming. He also searched for information online. Before long, he set up a small fish tank at home and started cultivating coral.
“The coral organism is easily destroyed and has extremely high requirements for water quality,” recalls Xu. “When I started cultivating coral, its state was not good.” As Xu gained knowledge about coral, his coral gradually started to grow well.
Xu, a Beijing native, has now lived on the tropical island of Hainan Province, where he serves as a coral conservationist Each day, he spends several hours diving deep under the waves to observe and record the growth and development of the creatures (生物) in coral reefs, known as “tropical rainforests” and “underwater gardens” of the ocean, providing a home for a quarter of all marine life. He aims to encourage individuals to take action in protecting coral reefs and the ocean as a whole from the destructive impact of climate change and human activities. “Understanding the species is the first step toward effective protection,” he says.
While pursuing his passion to protect coral, he met his life partner, Liu Xiwen, through their shared hobby of diving in Hainan. “Unlike many young people who care about their outfit and appearance, he only focuses on protecting coral,” says Liu. “Despite his skin peeling for spending long hours in the seawater, his attitude is different from what I’ve seen in most young people, and it’s attractive to me.”

For late 19th-century North Americans and Europeans, a display of tableware (餐具) could show much about someone’s social position, as the wealthy took great care to get different kinds of forks for everything. Before the 18th century, people of all classes usually ate with a knife and a spoon.
The fork’s path to the table was hard-won and slow. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, forks were used for slicing food into pieces or lifting meat from a pot or fire.
Following a reduction in size, the fork appeared to have entered dining areas in the courts of the Middle East and Byzantine Empire by the 8th and 9th centuries, and became common among wealthy families there by the 10th century. Early in the 11th century, it appeared in various pieces of European art. In the late 11th century, St. Peter Damian from Ostia wrote about a Byzantine princess who used forks and regarded her dying of a disease as punishment (惩罚) for such “luxury” (奢侈).
The fork’s slow conquest of Europe was carried out from Italy. Motivated by the same concerns for hygiene (卫生), forks were bought by wealthy Britons, inspired by Queen Victoria, who regarded fork use as a sign of good manners.
The fork’s introduction to North America dates back to 1633, when John Winthrop, a founder of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, was given a set of forks as presents. The Industrial Revolution strengthened the fork’s presence on dining room tables as production of flatware became less expensive. Writing in 1896 in Social ETiquette, Maud C. Cooke declared the fork had finally conquered the knife in America and “any attempt to give the knife importance at table is looked upon as an offense (冒犯) against good taste.”
44. What can we learn about forks from paragraph 1?
A. They were used improperly in the 18th century.
B. They had many different types in the 19th century.
C. They were popular in Europe before the 18th century.
D. They led to North American’s rise in social position.
45. What was a function of forks in ancient Egypt?
A. To eat food. B. To decorate tables.
C. To cut food. D. To create works of art.
46. Who was against the use of forks?
A. St. Peter Damian. B. Queen Victoria.
C. John Winthrop. D. Maud C. Cooke.
47. What marked the beginning of the fork’s introduction to North America?
A. The appearance of flatware.
B. The start of the Industrial Revolution.
C. John Winthrop receiving forks as presents.

1. —Ms. Du, could you tell me something about lion dance?
—______. It’s usually performed by two people dressed in a lion costume.
A. No way B. No problem C. Take it easy D. It doesn’t matter
A. No way不可能;B. No problem没问题;C. Take it easy放松,不要紧张;D. It doesn’t matter没关系。
They chose Tom to be ________captain of the team because they knew he was _______smart leader.
A. a; the B. the; the
C. the; a D. a; a
3. —Hi, Claire, are you free next week?
—Hmm… sorry, next week is quite ______ for me, Jack.
A. full B. fine C. exciting D. comfortable
