[文化差异]In China, I had English classes five times a week since the fifth grade. However, I don't know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the USA, I found that people said, “I am good.” or “I'm tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What's up?” It made me confused. I just didn't know what to say.
Since then, I have learned more and more differences between Chinese and USA cultures.
To my surprise, USA girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.
I am also surprised by how hardworking USA students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that's it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so clever, and I am sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and I have never thought about sports.

The MidAutumn Festival
Whenever I am asked about my favourite festival, I tell people that it is MidAutumn Festival. It falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. It celebrates the yearly harvest, which is a reward for working hard. Moreover, it brings families together. Another reason I like it is that autumn is my favourite season of the year.
Eating mooncakes is the most representative tradition of the holiday. The cake is traditionally cut a number of pieces that is equal to the number of people in your family. In the evening, families have dinner together and then go out to appreciate the full moon. However, this tradition is disappearing.
People these days prefer to watch TV shows or go to the movies together. My family are used to going on a trip. It offers us a good chance to relax because the crowd is smaller than that on other public holidays. The weather is also quite pleasant.
However people celebrate the holiday, the spirit is still the same.

My favourite Chinese festival
My favourite Chinese festival is the Spring Festival. It is one of the most important traditional festivals in our Chinese culture.
The reason why I love it most is because I can get lucky money, which is a really popular activity for children. It is believed that giving out the lucky money is a symbol of giving out good luck. During the festival, all the family members get together to have a big feast and watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. Moreover, people visit relatives and set off fireworks to celebrate the festival.
As far as I am concerned, the Spring Festival is not only a meaningful festival, but it is also a time for people to appreciate life to wish a better future. I feel grateful for everything I have and I look forward to a great new year ahead.
