Libraries have the power to make you smarter. Gyms can make you healthier. More than just shaping our mood (心情) for the day, architecture (建筑) also shapes who we become. For example, rooms with lower ceilings (天花板) make you more focused. ____11____
Adding natural elements (元素) to architecture is beneficial for both physical and mental health. A study by Heidelberg University, discovered that people who grew up in the countryside are less likely to have mental disorders (精神障碍) than those raised in cities. ____12____ The city plans its buildings carefully so that tall ones don’t block people’s views of the ocean and mountains.
Architecture that lacks soul can also fail to activate our senses, according to The Guardian. They even started walking faster as if they wanted to get away quickly. ____13____ To make architecture more interesting to our souls, designers should avoid (避免) flat and straight designs. ____14____ And they don’t fit well with nature, making buildings seem boring. ____15____ Bright colors like yellow and orange can make people feel energetic (充满活力的) and happy, while calm colors like blue and green can help people feel relaxed.
So, for your own well-being, surround yourself with buildings that bring you joy, and ideally a view of nature too.
A. These kinds of designs don’t allow light and shadow to create interesting pattern.

It’s believed that over 50 million metric tons of old electronic devices (设备) are thrown away each year. Old phones, televisions and computers are often found on the scrapheap (废物堆). This is known as e-waste, and it has become a big problem. It’s bad for the environment and our health.
According to the World Health Organization, only about 17% of e-waste in the world was recycled in 2019. Recycling is not the only answer; quite a lot of these devices can be repaired. As electronic devices have become cheaper, people are used to throwing them away instead of getting them repaired.
But in Austria, the government has been encouraging people to repair their devices by offering vouchers (代金券) to help pay for them to be fixed. It began in 2022, when the government said it would pay 50% of the cost of repairs.
People have to download a voucher from the government website and pay a repair shop to do the work. Then, the government sends the customer half of the cost after the job has been done.
The idea is to reduce e-waste and encourage people to get things fixed instead of throwing them away—and it’s also good for repair shops! One repair shop boss says that his incomes (收入) have doubled since the government introduced the vouchers.
And the government hopes that at least 400, 000 devices will be repaired by August 2026.
