Do you like your name? Names are important to people. A person has to live with the name for their whole(全部的)life after all.
For this reason, some parents in the US and Europe try very hard to give their children a special name. Some even pay a name expert(专家)to pick a name for them. Some companies charge(收费)one or two hundred dollars, but one Swiss company charges about $30,000 to think of a name for parents.
Not all parents do this. Many people look at baby naming books or look online for ideas.
Also, it’s common(普遍的)for parents to choose a name that another family member is called. Popular names these days are city names like Austin and Brooklyn or words in nature(自然)like Reed or Skye.
In China, given names always have special meanings. They show the culture of an era.
In the old days, given names such as Wangcai (making the family get more money and prosperous) were popular. During the 1950s and 1960s, many boys had given names such as “building the country” (Jianguo) and “celebrating(庆祝)National Day” (Guoqing). Girls had names of flowers like Guihua and Hehua.
During the 1970s, many children got the given name of Bo(博), or Yuhang(宇航). Their parents wanted them to learn more and have big dreams.
