(湖北四地七校高二期中)Warming seas across the globe are endangering coral reefs(珊瑚礁), a key ecosystem that supports marine life to live and thrive. As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and revived groups of adult corals for the first time, according to a recent study.
Freezing biological materials, or“cryopreserving” them, refers to keeping them in a deep freeze for long periods without affecting the cell's viability(活性), according to the Science Times website.
This method usually cools them to very low temperatures, commonly to 196℃. Since cells would normally die at such a low temperature due to the formation of ice inside, scientists need to monitor the freezing rate and choose the freezing medium carefully.
Researchers in the US experimented with freezing peasized pieces of a common coral in Hawaii. After removing the microbes on the corals, they sealed the corals in metal containers filled with a chemical solution that partially dehydrated(脱水)them and helped control ice growth.
When the corals reached a temperature of around 200℃, the remaining water in the corals solidified into a glassy form. The corals were still alive, with their lifedriving functions becoming extremely slow. After being cryopreserved for a few minutes, the researchers pulled the corals out and placed them in warm water. In two minutes, they started consuming oxygen—a sign of them staying alive.
Previously, researchers had already successfully cryopreserved coral larvae(幼虫), according to a study in 2018. However, the larvae can only be collected when corals lay eggs, which happens just a few nights each year. “That's putting a lot of eggs in one basket,” US marine scientist Liza Roger told Science News.
This breakthrough offers more hope to the world's corals, said Roger. However, there's more work to be done. A few days after thawing(解冻), the corals became “stressed out” from the process and were killed by the bacteria they normally live in harmony with. The researchers are working on using antibiotics to help them survive for a longer period of time.
4. What is the purpose of the recent study?
A.To bring dead corals back to life.
B.To freeze and revive coral larvae.
C.To find a way to preserve corals.
D.To study the conditions of coral growth.
根据第一段“As a possible way to save them from extinction, scientists have recently frozen and revived groups of adult corals for the first time”可知,科学家将珊瑚冷冻是为了使它们免于灭绝。故选C。
答案 C
5. What happened to the corals when they were cryopreserved?
A.They died for the time being.
B.Their life functions slowed down.
C.They remained alive and unchanged.
D.They fed on microbes in the containers.
根据第五段“The corals were still alive, with their lifedriving functions becoming extremely slow.”
6. What does Roger think about cryopreserving coral larvae?
A.It is not a reliable solution.
B.It needs a large number of eggs.
C.It holds promise for restoring corals.
D.It requires overly expensive technology.
故选A。
答案 A
7. What issue do the researchers still need to approach?
A.Finding a suitable freezing medium.
B.Identifying the bacteria on the corals.
C.Expanding the collection of coral larvae.
D.Maintaining the corals' health after thawing.
Scientists have discovered a new behaviour among bumblebees that tricks plants into flowering early.
When lack of pollen, bumblebees will bite little by little on the leaves of flowerless plants. The damage seems to fool the plant into flowering, sometimes up to 30 days earlier than normal.
With their hairy appearance and special sounds, bumblebees are hard to miss in gardens all over the world.Their hairy bodies make them excellent pollinators for crops like tomatoes and blueberries. They are among the first bees to appear each year and work a long season.
But despite their key role, bumblebees, like many other pollinators have seen their numbers decline suddenly in recent decades. One recent study pointed to climate change, reporting that an increasing number of hot days in Europe and North America was raising local bumblebees extinction rates.
But researchers have now made a discovery about bumblebees that could have something to do with their long term survival.Scientists in Switzerland found that when the bumblebees were out of pollen, they started to bite on the leaves of plants that hadn't yet flowered. They used their mouths to cut clearlyshaped holes in the leaves. But the creatures didn't eat the material or use it in their nests.
The damaged plants responded by flowering earlier than normal—in some cases up to 30 days ahead of schedule.Researchers also found that the bee damaged plants flowered 30 days earlier than undamaged plants and 25 days earlier than ones damaged by the scientists.
“I think everything that we've found is consistent with the idea that the bumblebees are damaging the plants and that that's an adaptation that brings flowers earlier and that benefits the bees,” said Dr.Mark Mescher, one of the authors from ETH Zurich.

(潍坊高二期中)The 97yearold botanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker of Teesdale's rarest flowers. “Everything about Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride—and the authority of someone who has just written a 288page book on the subject. Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove that—and the need to do something about it.
The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual one. The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000, as the uplands were generally believed there were too many sheep. Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas, reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive. Longer grass overshadows the delicate(娇嫩的)flowers, taking away the light they need to grow. As a result of her findings and her work with farmers who herd the land—as well as Natural England, which manages it—sheep numbers are increasing and the timing of herding is being carefully managed. This has led to the partial recovery of some plants.
At 93, she set up Teesdale Special Flora Research and Conservation Trust to record rare plants. A keen horse rider, at 95, she did a 55mile horse journey across Teesdale, raising almost $10,000 for the Trust. When asked about the secret to longevity, “Just keep going,”she says.
“Keep at it. Don't sit down and just watch TV.”
“I recognise I'm getting older and I've been trying to get more people to take over and do the records. They don't believe I won't be here forever,”Bradshaw says. Despite Bradshaw's guardianship of this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it, the future here is unknown. The last words of her book speak to this endless loss.“This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yours,”she writes. “In spite of trying, I have failed to prevent its decrease, now it is up to you.”

More than 40 percent of Antarctica's ice shelves have reduced in the past 25 years, potentially accelerating sea level rise by allowing more land ice to flow into the ocean.
16 They play a critical role in slowing the flow of ice on land into the ocean by essentially acting as a wall and surround nearly the entire coastline of Antarctica. When ice shelves thin or retreat(消退), ice on the land can flow into the ocean more quickly and accelerate sea level rise.
Healthy ice shelves naturally retreat and grow over time. An ice shelf is continuously flowing and advancing but will also lose mass through melting or calving, which is when its front breaks off into the ocean. 17 But the large portion of steadily shrinking ice shelves shows this natural cycle is off.
In West Antarctica, the Getz Ice Shelf experienced some of the biggest ice losses, shedding 1.9 trillion tons of ice over the study period. Most ice shelves in East Antarctica, however, increased in volume or stayed the same. 18 Region is protected by a band of cold water at the coast, which helps keep nearby warm water at bay. Even so, the study still showed pockets of shrinking ice shelves, and researchers are still investigating the reasons. 19
The current ice shelf data set is not long enough for researchers to definitively make climate change connection yet, but it would be a remarkable coincidence if the natural variability in ice shelves were just that much larger. 20 But we don't need to hit it before seeing an effect on the planet.
A.Then it can gain ice from the land and grow again.
B.Ice shelves are massive floating sections of ice extending from glaciers on land.
C.The east is not as exposed to the warm water like the other side of the continent.
D.The thinning of the ice shelves has shown up in the surrounding environment, too.
E.Ice shelves not just the big ones, are steadily losing mass over time with no sign of recovery.
F.One theory is that the warmer water on the western side could be slowly coming in the region.
G.Additionally, climate models predict ice shelves will steadily shrink in a warming world as observed, eventually hitting a tipping point for ice sheet collapse.

Good morning, everyone,
My topic today is “Environmental Protection”.As we all know, with the quick development of economy, the global environment is getting worse and worse. If nothing is done, all the living creatures on the earth will be endangered.
So it is everyone's duty to protect the environment. As students, we can do our part in environmental protection by leading a lowcarbon life.We had better use less water and electricity. When we go out, we can take buses or ride bikes instead of taking taxis.Besides, we are supposed to cut down the use of natural resources.Try to use more recycled products.
We believe with everyone's effort, a great difference will be made. Please take action right now!Only by protecting nature can humans really win.
That's all.Thanks for your listening.

(厦门高二期末)Oliver sat up in his sleeping bag, feeling glad.On a lowhanging branch a few yards away sat a great gray owl(猫头鹰)! Its face was so noticeable that he recognized it immediately.Great gray owls were rare and endangered, and he might never see one again.Oliver was still staring when he realized his dad was sitting up too.“See that?”His father nodded, a look of wonder on his face.“A great gray owl…I never thought I'd actually see one.”
In the morning, Oliver wandered around the campsite with his binoculars(望远镜).Then he saw a big nest in an Oregon ash.He climbed up the tree and looked inside—four smooth white eggs! He fished out an old digital camera and took a bunch of photos.Back at the campsite, he showed the photos to his dad, who agreed: owl eggs.
Then Dad handed him a cell phone,“Read the news.”Oliver read the headline: “New Shopping Mall Under Discussion.” The new mall would have Oliver's favorite sporting goods store.Sweet.But when he read its location, his smile faded.“That's right where we saw the owl. They can't do that!”Oliver said.“I don't think they should build that mall there.” He looked down at the news again.“On Tuesday there's a town council meeting to vote whether to build it there. Can I go?”“That's an excellent idea,”said his dad.
But when Oliver biked over to the meeting, no one took him seriously.
“That's nice that you're interested in birds,”said the town council president.“Why not write a paper for your science class?”The president was treating the 14yearold like he was 5.
“I have photos of a nest,”Olive insisted.“With eggs in it.Owls are breeding(繁殖)in that area.”
The president glanced at the photos.“The date stamp on these says 2005; that's 15 years ago!”
“How could that be? I just took them!”said Oliver. But he knew the camera was old.Something must have gone wrong with it.

Paragraph 1:
On the way home, Oliver's mind was busy developing a plan.In order to stop building the new shopping mall in this campsite, he had to find a good argument to convince the town council president.First, he found the documents on the Internet that the great gray owl is a rare and endangered animal under national key protection. At the same time, he asked his father to buy him a new digital camera. The next day, Oliver rushed at the campsite with his new digital camera. He climbed the tree with great care.Luckily, the owl was brooding. He picked up the new camera and filmed the video of the owl hatching its eggs. Then he took a bunch of photos again. While he was bathed in joy, the owl woke up with a start.Being afraid that Oliver would hurt her eggs, the owl jumped at him.Oliver was so frightened that he fell from the tree and broke his left leg.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, Oliver showed up at the town council meeting on crutches(拐杖).He moved slowly towards the town council president with documents he had downloaded from the Internet, as well as newly shot videos and pictures about the great gray owl being an endangered rare animal under national protection. He handed them over to him.Without saying a word, he turned around and limped out of the town council meeting hall.On the following day, he learned the cancellation of the new shopping mall on the campsite from his father.
