Whippersnapper
As an alteration of the term “snippersnapper”, the word first appeared in the 17th century, expressing our ancestors' annoyance at illmannered children. In its more contemporary version, the word relates to a young person who is too confident and does not show enough respect to older.
Tape
Are you born in the 1980s? If so, you may still be using the term “tape” when speaking of recording music or TV shows.Today, though digital media has made data storage on magnetic an outdated thing, this old linguistic habit still exists.
Stewardess
In the earlier age of air travel, female crew members serving airline passengers were called stewardesses. It was the development of women's rights movement in the 1960s that the word fell out of use.“Stewardess” was replaced by a more genderneutral term,“flight attendant”.
Dungarees
What we know as “jeans” today were once called “dungarees” to refer to trousers made of denm(蓝粗棉布).As traders began importing the cloth from Genoa in Italy, this kind of trousers got a new name “jeans”.So don't be surprised if you catch your grandpa saying dungarees.

The variety of choices today, especially in entertainment and products, is almost beyond comprehension.
Going shopping? There's exponentially more to choose from at your local supermarket in almost every category. It's not just groceries, of course.Need a power saw? How about paint for your wall? So many options you could reasonably throw up your hands in despair.
Yet, I'm willing to bet if someone asked you whether you'd prefer more choices in life or fewer, you'd pick more.“Since, why not? More is better, right?”
However, here's what you lose when you have unlimited choices.First, peace of mind. It's stressful to have to go through an enormous menus of options, since it takes effort to sift through the pros and cons of each, and what if you choose wrong? In an often cited study done at Wharton, customers in a gourmet grocery story were watched as they passed a display of either 6 or 24 types of jam. While more customers were drawn to the larger display, only 3 percent of shoppers who passed by bought jam at that table.
But beyond our confusion when we're faced with enormous choices, we have also lost a sense of community. Those three national TV networks back in the day aired shows that nearly everyone watched and that you could talk about with the confidence that they were well known by all.Today, you can't assume that any of your friends or coworkers are on the same page.
It's nice, of course, that there are so many choices. But the downside is that at a time when our society is crying for unity, some interest groups often cut off their fans from the rest of our society.
Obviously, we cannot change the present situation.Even as we feel overwhelmed by choice, we certainly wouldn't want someone else to decide which choices we should give up for the sake of peace of mind. But I do sometimes miss the days when decisionmaking wasn't always a detailed search among endless possibilities for that one, shining, perfect choice that we will never find.

B.To provide some advice for the readers.
C.To give more examples of choice today.
D.To introduce a new topic for discussion.
根据第一段“The variety of choices today, especially in entertainment and products, is almost beyond comprehension.(今天,选择的多样性,尤其是在娱乐和产品方面,几乎令人难以理解。)” (新高考Ⅱ卷)Reading Art: Art for Book Lovers is a celebration of an everyday object—the book, represented here in almost three hundred artworks from museums around the world. The image of the reader appears throughout history, in art made long before books as we now know them came into being. In artists' representations of books and reading, we see moments of shared humanity that go beyond culture and time.
In this “book of books”,artworks are selected and arranged in a way that emphasizes these connections between different eras and cultures. We see scenes of children learning to read at home or at school, with the book as a focus for relations between the generations. Adults are portrayed(描绘)alone in many settings and poses—absorbed in a volume, deep in thought or lost in a moment of leisure. These scenes may have been painted hundreds of years ago, but they record moments we can all relate to.
Books themselves may be used symbolically in paintings to demonstrate the intellect(才智), wealth or faith of the subject. Before the wide use of the printing press, books were treasured objects and could be works of art in their own right. More recently, as books have become inexpensive or even throwaway, artists have used them as the raw material for artworks—transforming covers, pages or even complete volumes into paintings and sculptures.
Continued developments in communication technologies were once believed to make the printed page outdated. From a 21stcentury point of view, the printed book is certainly ancient, but it remains as interactive as any batterypowered ereader. To serve its function, a book must be activated by a user: the cover opened, the pages parted, the contents reviewed, perhaps notes written down or words underlined. And in contrast to our increasingly networked lives where the information we consume is monitored and tracked, a printed book still offers the chance of a wholly private, “offline”activity.

A “Quick Response Code”, also known as QR code is a type of barcode that Denso Wave developed, a Japanese barcode developer, in 1994.
The use of technology saves people's efforts in labor. In the early 1960s, the economy of Japan entered high economic growth.During this period, supermarkets and convenience stores thrived and were selling a wide variety of goods ranging from food to clothing. To keep up with the demand for checkout counters, cash registers(收银机)were widely used.Due to the heavy workload, cashiers on the checkout counters experienced numbness on their wrists and developed a kind of disease. As a solution to the problem, the Point of Sales(POS)system was developed and included the use of barcodes.
In the long run, developers noticed the problem barcodes held. The limit of 20 alphanumeric characters was not long enough in holding a product's information and the position of how a barcode is scanned leads to scan failures.Denso Wave stepped in and invented a new type of barcode that could hold more information and could be scanned in any scanner direction. Thus, QR code was introduced in 1994 and has made history up to today.
Today, QR codes are generally used in advertising, business, health care, and education. There are two types of QR codes: Static QR codes and Dynamic QR codes.Static QR codes are QR codes that are free and permanent. This type of QR code is not modifiable(可修改的)and therefore cannot change the data stored in the QR code.Dynamic QR codes are QR codes that are modifiable in content and can store more data even after you have printed it into the paper.

You run into the grocery store to pick up one bottle of water. You get what you need, head to the front, and choose the line that looks fastest.
You chose wrong.People who you swear got in other lines long after you are already checked out and off to the parking lot. 16
It turns out, it's just math working against you; chances are, the other line really is faster.
Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay. 17 Any small interruption—a price check, a chatty customer can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.
If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers.Think about the probability: 18 So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.
Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem.Make all customers stand in one long, snaking line—called a serpentine line—and serve each person at the front with the next available register. 19 This is what they do at most banks and fastfood restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it.Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.
20 It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower. So wherever your next wait may be: Good luck.
A.Why does this always seem to happen to you?
B.So why don't most places encourage serpentine lines?
C.Some of them may have stood in a queue for almost an hour.
D.The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.
E.How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line?
F.With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.
G.But sometimes, as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.

17.解析 上文“Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout to get all their customers through with minimum delay.(杂货店尽量让足够的员工在结账时让所有的顾客以最小的延误完成结账。)”解释了杂货店之前的工作模式,下文“Any small interruption—a price check, a chatty customer can have downstream effects, holding up an entire line.(任何一个小小的中断,一个价格检查,一个喋喋不休的顾客,都会产生下游效应,拖住整个队伍。)”
18.解析 根据上文“If there are three lines in the store, delays will happen randomly at different registers.(如果杂货店中有三列队伍,延迟将在不同的队伍中随时发生。)”联系下文“So it's not just in your mind: Another line probably is moving faster.(所以这不仅仅是在你的脑海里:另一条队伍可能移动得更快。)”
Researchers have a good way to deal with this problem.(我们得知研究人员有一个很好的方法来处理这个问题。)”以及下文“This is what they do at most banks and fastfood restaurants. With a serpentine line, a long delay at one register won't unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it.Instead, it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up checkout overall.(这个大多数银行和快餐店都是这样做的。有了一条蜿蜒的队伍,在一个登记处长时间拖延不会不公平地惩罚后面排队的人。相反,它会减慢每个人一点点,但加快了整体结账速度。)”说明这个新方案迅速有效,联系上下文可知,空格中应该是与旧的结账方案作比较。故选F。
答案 F
20.解析 结合下文“It takes many registers to keep one line moving quickly, and some stores can't afford the space or manpower.(要保持一列队伍的快速运转,需要很多的收银机,而且有些商店负担不起空间和人力。)”

答案 is
故填were operated。
答案 were operated
故填before。
答案 before

答案 with

答案 a
故填What。
答案 What
have time to do sth.(有时间做某事),其中动词不定式作后置定语,此处用动词不定式形式。故填to work。
