Eating a diet rich in calcium could help us live longer, a new research by Swedish scientists suggests. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm came to the conclusion that men who consumed a lot of calcium in their diets were 25 percent 45 likely to die over the next 10 years, when compared to their counterparts who had a minimal intake of this mineral in their food. None of these men were taking calcium supplements.
It was revealed that those men who had the most calcium intake in their food had a 25 percent less risk of dying of any cause and the risk of heart-related mortality was also 46 by 23 percent among these men. The men in the top three based on their calcium consumption, were getting about 2,000 mg of the mineral a day, on average, compared to nearly 1,000 mg for individuals in the bottom three. For the study participants, the main 47 of calcium in the diet were milk and milk products, as well as cereal products.
Moreover, researchers noted that sticking to such a diet has the effect on the risk of dying from cancer.
Scientists believe that a diet rich in calcium 48 lower the mortality by reducing blood pressure, levels of cholesterol and blood sugar. 49 , they urge that every person gets enough calcium in their daily routine. The American Heart Association recommends that most adults between 19 and 50 years old take 1,000 mg of calcium every day, and the US Recommended Dietary Allowance(RDA)recommends that individuals 50 years old and 50 take 1,200 mg a day. Three important things happened in 1955 in New York City. The Metropolitan Opera Association looked for a place to build a new opera house, since its old building was inadequate. The New York Philharmonic Orchestra was told that its old building would soon he p 51 down. Like the opera, the orchestra needed a new home. The city announced plans to clear a three-block slum area, as part of an urban renewal project.
To some people, the three things seemed to fit together. Why not build new homes, they asked, for both opera and orchestra, on the cleared slum site? Why not develop the area a 52 a unified grouping of treaters and concert halls?
A committee of public-spitited citizens started work on plans for such a project. They named it the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Architects dug up an overall plan for the site.
F 53 large buildings were planned for Lincoln Center: Avery Fisher Hall, for the philharmonic orchestra; the new Metropolitan Opera House; the New Your State Theater, for ballet and opera; the Vivian Baumont Theater, for plays; and the Juilliard School where m 54 actors, and dancers would study. There would also be a library-museum, a band shell for outdoor concerts, a fountain, and a reflecting pool.
Six different architectural firms were hired to design the buildings. They met together once a month, to make sure that e 55 building would be in harmony with the overall plan.
Early in 1959, President Eisenhower began ground for the f 56 of the buildings. Ten years later, workers were completing the last of them. The dirty, crowded, rat-swarming apartment buildings were gone. In their places s 57 charming theaters and tree-shaded plazas. Today, all New York uses and enjoys its new and exciting Lincoln Center for education and entertainment.
