Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛线) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.
Getting there

The R8 bus from Orpington stops nearby (except Sundays) or the 146 bus from Bromley North and South terminates (终点站) in Downe village, half a mile from the property. The nearest railway stations are Chelsfield or Orpington, about four miles away.

14-year-old Leanne Fan from San Diego, California, was named the grand prize winner of the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the nation’s top middle school science competition.
Leanne Fan developed the Finsen Headphones, a low-cost headphone device that uses machine learning and blue light therapy (疗法) to detect and treat mid-ear infections (感染) in children — potentially preventing up to 60% of hearing loss in children. The world sees 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year. Fan hopes that this can be an effective and low-cost treatment option for the thousands who are affected.
Fan was inspired to create the headphones three years ago while learning about Niels Finsen, who won the Nobel Prize in 1903 after inventing light therapy to treat bacterial (细菌的) infections. “I thought, ‘This is an amazing idea, and I can apply it to something else in my daily life,’” Fan said.
Fan took home the top prize, earning the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” and $25,000. She is planning to use some of the prize money to start the patent process for the headphones. Fan is optimistic that the Finsen Headphones will be able to help people in the near future.
“Being part of the 3M Young Scientist Challenge was absolutely the best part of my year,” Fan said. “I could meet scientists that are my age and going for their dreams too, and made some friends.” She hopes to inspire other girls who want to become inventors. “Even a small idea can go far,” she said. “I had an idea to use blue light to kill bacteria and three years later, I’m here.”

CONSERVATIONISTS are hoping to create England’s biggest native woodland by planting 100,000 trees in the Yorkshire Dales.
Snaizeholme, near the town of Hawes, was covered in woodland centuries ago but the 561-hectare valley is now almost barren (贫瘠的). Across the Yorkshire Dales, total tree cover amounts to just five per cent, the Woodland Trust has said, with ancient woodland making up just one per cent of that cover.
The trust wants to raise £8 million for a decades-long program that will see a restored forest providing habitats for threatened species such as woodland birds and black grouse. Planted trees will be mostly native broadleaved species such as alder, silver birch, down birch, willow, aspen, rowan, hawthorn and blackthorn, with montane species on the higher slopes.
Al Nash, who is heading the project for the Woodland Trust, said, “I love the Dales but the one thing it lacks in many areas is an abundance (丰富性) of trees. Here we will be giving nature and biodiversity a big boost and creating a rich variety of habitats. It is a rare opportunity to create a sizeable wildlife conservation area for the north of England. It’s clearly a wonderful opportunity to create something real that can be seen and touched in the Yorkshire Dales for the fight against climate change.”
The first stage of planting has already begun with funding from the White Rose Forest, DEFRA and corporate donors. More trees than needed will be planted as not all will survive in the windswept, rainy upland valley. They will be arranged at random and without plastic guards to help stimulate natural forest growth, the trust said.
8. How does the author illustrate the problem of the woodland loss?
A. By providing data. B. By listing examples.
C. By making comments. D. By giving explanations.
9. What is the message conveyed in paragraph 4?
A. The trend of global warming. B. The decline in variety of trees.
C. The significance of the project. D. The campaign of restoring habitats.
10. Why will more trees than needed be planted?
A To facilitate the random growth of trees. B. To guarantee a higher survival rate of trees.
C. To strengthen defence against wind and rain. D. To sustain the balance between varieties of trees.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A Breakthrough Made in Forest Growth.
B. Funds Being Raised to Plant Trees in England.
C. Conservationists Taking Action to Help England.
D. England’s Largest Native Woodland to Be Created.

Texting walkers aren’t just an annoyance to other walkers, Australian researchers armed with movie special-effects technology have determined scientifically that they’re threats to themselves. Using motion-capture technology similar to that used for films, researchers concluded that texting while walking not only affects balance but also the ability to walk in straight line.
“Some people like checking emails while walking to work in the morning,” said the study co-author Hoorn,“but they may not know it has a serious effect on the safety of themselves.” Other facts have also proved this. A tourist walked off a pier(长堤)near Melbourne last month while texting, bringing a sudden and icy end to a penguin-watching visit. Another person who was too wrapped up in his phone to notice dangers walked straight into the fountain in front of a shopping mall.
The Australian study involved 27 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having knocked into objects while texting. They were asked to walk 8.5 meters three times-once without phones, once while reading text and once while writing text, when eight cameras recorded their actions.
They found the volunteers using the phone walked slower, and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, which forced their heads to move more, throwing themselves off balance.“In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for traffic accidents,”said Mr Hoorn. “The best thing to do is to step aside and stop, or keep off the phone.”
Authorities worldwide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong’s subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have highlighted the danger in Singapore, where the Straits Times newspaper recently declared cell phone-distracted road crossing as “bad habit No.2” contributing to the rising number of road deaths. Some US states, including New York and Arkansas, are considering bans on what they’re calling phone jaywalking.
12 Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “wrapped up” in paragraph 2?
A. Annoyed.
B. Absorbed.
C. Confused.
D. Absent-minded.
13. What can we learn from the Australian study?
A. Ten volunteers admitted knocking into things while texting.
B. The volunteers using phones while walking moved normally.
C. The volunteers were divided into three groups during the study.
D. Texting walkers are exposed to greater possibility of traffic accidents.
14. What’s the official attitude to people texting while walking in most countries?
A. Neutral.
B. Negative.
C. Unclear.
D. Supportive.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Various walkers will get different social evaluations.
B. Communication device greatly improves people’s lives.
C. Texting regardless of time and occasion brings huge risks.
D. Texting has become the preferred communication method

Not many people have an emergency fund even though it is essential. C. And when you achieve that, then you can set a higher goal.

When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock?” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o'clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as I was about to start Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.”

The first stage of planting has already begun with funding from the White Rose Forest DEFRA and corporate donors.
A. To facilitate the random growth of trees.

12. Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “wrapped up” in paragraph 2?
A. Annoyed.
B. Absorbed.
C. Confused.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes were disquieting sounds from hell to me, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed in it nervously.
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was segmented and occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange for my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment.
