Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong
Province has a long history of making kites. According to local
people, the Weifang kite-making can date back to 2,000 years ago.
At first, they were often used for measuring distances and
communicating. During the Ming Dynasty, kites started to be
popular among common people as fun. In 2006, the Weifang kite-
making was included in the national-level intangible cultural
heritage (非物质文化遗产) lists.
16
Yang Hongwei, 56, was born in a kite-making family. Yang
often saw kites with bright colors and different shapes in her
grandfather's workshop. “Every time I see these beautiful kites, my
sadness and down feelings go away,” said Yang. Yang started to
learn the skill from her grandfather at the age of 16. After
practicing the skill for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang's kites, people can see not only common styles like
butterflies and swallows (燕子), but also some prints telling
Chinese traditional stories and history. For example, she once made
a kite showing a phoenix head (凤头) lined with paintings of 50
famous women in Chinese history on each side. Though the idea
was cool, the process was not easy. Yang said that each woman had
different characters in appearance (外表), clothing and the make-up
style. To create their images, she spent much effort and time checking
historical records or discussing the important facts with experts
(专家).
In her spare time, she also travels to different countries
including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand to tell
people about Chinese stories seen on kites and the traditional ways
of making kites. “I'm an inheritor of the culture. It's also one of
my important jobs to spread the heritage around the world and
onto the next generation (一代人),” she said.

grams per square meter, but it is strong. Thanks to this, Lianshi
paper was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage in
Fujian in 2008.
Lianshi paper was invented by Deng Jinkun. He is a local
inheritor of Lianshi paper. Having learned the skills for more than
30 years, the 54-year-old inheritor continues the work of making
“paper silk”.
Deng said making Lianshi paper has 72 steps, including cutting
bamboo, soaking (浸湿), making pulp (纸浆), and drying.
What makes it stand out is its bleaching (漂白) technology. “In
May each year, bamboo is cut off, and soaked in lime (石灰)
twice. The bamboo is then steamed (蒸) at a high temperature.
After that, it's bleached on the mountain for four months,” Deng
said. “The natural bleaching process makes it white.”
Apart from carrying on traditional art, Deng also brought in
new ideas at the same time. Traditionally, the pulp is collected using
a wooden frame (木架) held by two people. “Our Lianshi paper
needs only one person because we use a rope to hang one side,”
Deng said.
When they bake the paper, the baking wall (纸焙墙) is also
special. According to Deng, other places use lime to make the wall.
“After a trip to the University of Science and Technology of China
in 2018, I decided to use tabia (三合土) to make the wall so that
it lasts longer,” Deng said. After it is built, the tabia baking wall
can be used to make paper for 40 years.
