In 1374,in some Euro- pean towns, people did exactly that. They were struck by a dancing plague (瘟疫) that forced them to dance. This phenomenon (现象) was reported to have happened throughout parts of Western Eu- rope, affecting people from the 14th to the 17th century. Hardly stopping to eat or even sleep, they would dance, sometimes for days on end, making this one of the strangest sicknesses in Western history. Over the next century, there were only a few outbreaks. However, in the summer of 1518,it reappeared in the city of Strasbourg, France. It all began with a woman called Mrs. Troffea, who started to dance crazily in the street. She was soon joined by 34 people within a week;by the end of the month, the crowd had increased to 400,most of whom were women. A- gain, people were dancing until they could no longer continue, with some finally dying from heart attacks or exhaustion. One report shows that the plague was killing around 15 people per day. As the plague worsened, concerned nobles (贵族) turned to the advice of local doctors, who said that the plague was a “ natural dis- ease” caused by “ hot blood”. So the nobles encouraged more dancing. The reason behind their actions was that they believed the dancers could only recover (康复) if they danced continuously night and day. The nobles even paid for musicians to keep the moving. Then, as before, it disappeared almost as suddenly as it had come. While these events may sound highly unbe- lievable, there is clear written evidence that it did happen. Now,historians and scientists are still try- ing to find out the true cause of this phenome- non. ( )24. What do we know about the plague? A. It cost some people􀆳s lives. B. It took place twice in history. C. It affected people of all ages. D. It stopped in the 16th century. ( )25. Why did the nobles encourage more dancing? A. We think we have found a great way to do this. Last month,we did a class project on the high- ways near our town. We learned about the A- dopt-a-Highway Programme. This programme brings people together to pick up litter along the roads. We think it is a great idea for all students in our school to join the programme and adopt a highway. Adopting a highway is not like adopting a pet. When a highway is adopted, only part of the highway is cared for by a group of people. The group agrees to work every week to keep its part of the highway clean. Each group gets its own sign that has the name of the group printed on it. The sign is put up at the side of the road. This sign lets drivers know who is keeping that area of the road. The Adopt-a-Highway Programme is a great way for people to help their environment look nicer. Also, the government does not have to send out many road workers. This saves mon- ey. Finally, people may work harder to keep roads clean if they see people, especially teenag- ers like us,cleaning them up. We need helpers to care for our adopted highway. If you want to feel great and keep our roads clean, please come with your parents to the meeting next week. We will meet in Mrs Lake􀆳s room at 6:00 p. m. on Wednesday. At the meeting,we will talk about which roads are the dirtiest as a result of people􀆳s unkind acts. Then we􀆳ll try to pick an area to adopt and clean up. I am looking forward to seeing you at the meeting. Remember to keep our roads clean! ( )28. What is the Adopt-a-Highway Pro- gramme about? A. Giving names to the highways. B. Drawing pictures of highways. C. Picking up litter along the roads. D. Putting up signs near the roads. ( )29. What should the students do first if they want to join the programme? A. Pick a spot to care for. B. Call Mrs Lake next week. C. Write a letter to their parents. 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 108 UNIT 3 检测卷 D. To show drivers how to drive safely. D. To tell a story about adopting a pet. ( ) 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Adopt-a-Pet B. Adopt-a-Highway C. Ways to Protect the Environment D. Volunteers on Roads D A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite e- qually through the year and the temperature rarely falling below 16℃ . Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these are- as would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rain- forests may also influence wind and rainfall pat- terns, potentially(潜在地) causing certain nat- ural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources:land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm ani- mals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example,a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. Peo- ple obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. First- ly,when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Second- ly,cutting large sections of rainforests may pro- vide a good supply of wood right now,but in the long run it actually reduces the world􀆳s wood supply. Rainforests are often called the world􀆳s drugstore. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. How- ever, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is ex- tremely likely that our best chance to cure dis- eases lies somewhere in the world􀆳s shrinking rainforests. ( ) 32. Rainforests can help to adjust the climate because they A. reflect more heat into the at- mosphere B. bring about high rainfall through- out the world C. rarely cause the temperature to drop lower than 16℃ D. absorb the heat from the sun, reducing the effect of heat from the sun on the earth 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 􀪋 109 ( )33. Before I moved to Sici- ly,I had travelled around the whole of Italy, the south and the north, and I absolutely fell in love with the culture and the language so I was in- spired to learn the language and also to move here. And here I am now, living in Sicily. 37. When you get back home, you􀆳ll have lots of stories to tell your friends and family. Even if something isn􀆳t very fun,it will be funny to look back and laugh at those awkward or harsh moments. For example, I was travelling with a group of friends in Pisa and we took the wrong bus to get to the beach area,so we ended up being stuck in the rain and having to walk back. When you travel, you expose yourself to different people. 38. Travelling is the realization of home. 40. I enjoyed throwing the ball a- round with my friends but I didn􀆳t think I had what it took to play on a team. “I􀆳m no football player. ” I told my dad. “ You􀆳ll never know what you􀆳re capable of unless you give it a try, Adam. ” He told me. So I did. It would give me a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence. I remember how proud he was when I won some awards and the hug he gave me after I received my congratulation letter. There was rarely a game where Dad wasn􀆳t on the side- lines, cheering me on. Four years of hard preseason football camps came down to my last game. I urged my dad to bring our video camera. I waved at my parents before the opening kick-off and put on my game face. My pads broke as I made contact with the offensive play- ers. I grabbed at the clothes of their running back and dragged him to the field. A loud cheer came from the sidelines. There was Dad with the camera, cheering like crazy. By the end of the game, I had stopped seven players and a sacking (擒杀)—my best performance ever,a perfect end to my career. I ran into my dad􀆳s arms. I was sweaty and smelly, but he hugged me anyway. I couldn􀆳t wait to watch the tape — experience every moment again. As soon as we got in the house,I took the tape out of the camera and put it in the player. My dad, mom, sister and I sat down in the living room in front of the big screen TV. I pressed Play. The video started. The two teams, lined up before the game, then the running back tak- ing the handoff, running up to the line,me reac- hing out,and then􀆺the sky and clouds! I could hear my dad screaming “Way to go,Adam!” as images of the sky shook up and down on screen. Paragraph 1: I leaned forward to see the next big play. Strangely the sky and clouds kept rooted on the screen, but the noise on the field and the cheering shouts from my dad continuously occupied my ears. Almost instantly I realized that dad must have dropped the video camera to the ground as he was crazily waving, but he was too thrilled to notice anything. The voice on the screen ranged from “ Good job,Adam!” to “ Come on. Get up!” and finally “Ya-hoo!” as he gave me a big hug. Watching the sky and clouds as the backdrop,I just silently listened. Paragraph 2: The tape ended and Dad was quiet. As Dad was uncomfort- ably shifting,I sensed the guilt in his heart. “ I􀆳m sorry,” he said. “I failed to record you the whole game. ” “No,” I firmly answered. “ It was your cheers that fueled my courage in that fierce football game. For me,it􀆳s the most precious part of the video. ” Hearing my words,he smiled harder than ever before. During the incomplete tape,I found the haunting melody of the football game and my entire life. 21.
