When I was 14, my dad and I took a bike trip in the countryside. My dad chose a 16-mile section of the road for us to ride. Part of it included an old tunnel (隧道) called West Hill. This old tunnel is over a mile long!
To prepare, we checked our tires (轮胎) and bike lights. My mom made us some food. She also gave us fruit and plenty of water. In the morning, we put our bikes into the car and set off.
After a two-hour drive, we reached the road. It was a cool afternoon in early fall. But we were both wet and tired because our trip started with a long uphill climb! As we reached the West Hill Tunnel, I felt nervous as it was very dark inside! But my dad encouraged me. He said he would be right beside me. He reminded me to stay careful and keep my light on!
When we entered the tunnel, the sound of our bikes echoed through the darkness. I turned on my flashlight and saw walls covered by drawings. The air smelled like wet mud (泥土). And I felt like I was being watched! I was pretty scared, but paying attention to following my dad helped me relax. After riding half-way through, I could see light coming from the other end of the tunnel. That gave me courage to keep going. And I was so happy to ride out into the bright afternoon!
Whenever I go through hardships in life I remember this trip. It reminds me that hope is always ahead of me. It turns on the light of hope in my heart, and it gives me courage to keep riding through life's dark tunnels.

Do you sleep well? If your answer is no, the following might help you.
Set a certain bedtime and rising time.
A certain bedtime and rising time can help you build up your body clocks. Set a bedtime which is good and natural for you. Don’t change your bedtime and rising time on weekends.
Avoid exciting activities just before sleeping.
Exciting activities get your thoughts running. At the same time, if you make tomorrow’s plan or read an exciting story before turning off the light, it doesn’t give you enough time to relax before you try to sleep.
Keep the bedroom for sleeping only.
It’s a bad habit for you to use your bedroom as a place to eat, watch TV, read, talk on the phone, or discuss important matters with your family members. Break that habit to get better sleep.
Don’t go to bed too early.
Your body usually lets you sleep only the number of hours it needs. You should decide how many hours you must sleep in order not to experience daytime sleepiness.
Take a warm shower before your bedtime.
A twenty-minute warm shower at a temperature of about 45℃-50℃ not only is a great relax at day’s end, but also raises your body temperature by several degrees. The coming drop in temperature of your body will naturally make you feel sleepy.
9. What should you do if you want to build up your body clocks?
A. Set a certain bedtime and rising time. B. Go to bed neither too early nor too late.
C. Keep the bedroom for sleeping only. D. Take a warm shower before sleeping.

How will you feel when your best friend receive something you really want for the New Year or you are not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is? Comparisons (比较) are normal and can sometimes be helpful. But it is more important for your happiness to focus on your own progress.
“We prefer to compare ourselves with others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves. But comparing your achievements to your past self and your future self can be more positive,” says psychologist (心理学家) Nicola Abbott. This can make you feel proud of what you have achieved and excited about what you might do.
Do comparisons make you unhappy? It is quite natural to compare yourself to those around you and we often do it without realizing. It can help us to find our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However it is important to be realistic and remember that nobody is perfect.
If you begin to feel quite low, Abbott suggests trying a different role model or focusing on your own stress and what you are good at. Asking yourself questions like “What am I good at?” “What do I feel proud of?” and “What improvements can I notice?” can help to improve your self-esteem.
All in all, jealousy (嫉妒) is an ordinary feeling, but focusing on improving your own performance can help you feel just as successful. Besides, learning to celebrate your friend’s achievements can help not only to improve your friends’ feeling but also help you feel good.
13. What does the underlined phrase “focus on” mean?
A. play a role in B. make use of C. pay attention to D. take part in
14. Why do we need to compare yourself with your past self ?
A. To increase your excitement. B. To make yourself proud of your achievements.
C. To focus on your goals. D. To care about others.
15. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To tell us not to argue with those successful people.
B. To tell us to try to do better than those around you.
C. To tell us not to mind the feeling of being jealousy.
D. To tell us to improve ourselves and congratulate friends on their progress.
16. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a little girl, my parents were very busy. And we didn’t have the Internet at home. In order to kill time, I started drawing.
At that time, I thought of drawing as just a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I was able to do what I loved for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends was studying art in the US. She advised me to go to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) . That was the only school I applied to (申请) when I had graduated from high school.
Luckily, I was accepted into RISD. There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused (困惑的) . I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to discover my own style.
I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator (插画师) for more than ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’ve also worked with companies like McDonald’s and Apple. Some clients (客户) keep coming back. They love my style.
Whenever I get a new assignment (任务) , I read it over a lot of times. I do this to work out what the most important message is that I should be communicating through my work on the project. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while—the best idea often turns up when I am not thinking too hard about things.
I hope I will never lose my excitement and continue to create wonderful things.
